yes, the whole series is a little hard to understand. I found it easiest to try and look at the children to somewhat understand the timeframe but because the harem-women don't visibly age, it's not as easily noticeable

Same and it is based on historical events and experiences since people acted like this in real life and in some instances still do. The power struggle especially in royal empirical society is real in every country were such a society exists. It's just not enough to become empress, emperor, queen or king you have to maintain that status by any means necessary even if those means are looked apond as vile and heinous. For this is just an reenactment of what life was like at times during this era in history not just in china but other countries as well. For it's natural to preserve one's self. This settlement is quite fitting for it really was a fight for survival not for just the servants and staff but for the nobles too as you can see. To the point where one will sacrifice one's own self preservation to preserve another's especially if such sacrifice will have long-term effects and benefits in the future.
I live in Florida, US, so watching Hailan undress was my first exposure to the intricacies of palace dress in the 1700s. I think the layers were designed to make undressing a major event! But the practicalities are also evident! The same clothes can be used at many times of year, just layered differently. And so beautiful! How wonderful was it that the Emperor made A'Rou tell all the concubines how he treated her when she was "serving" him! My she totally had her dirty laundry laid out for all to see! Married to the Emperor, yet still a virgin. And perhaps a little frustrated? lol OK i know some of this was in last episode, it all just became so clear in this one!
I don't think anyone saw this twist coming. This is a totally new twist regarding what the emperor was doing. I'm not sure how could the emperor get a good night's sleep knowing A'Rou is in the same room. Who knows if she would suddenly snap and try to kill or poison him in revenge?
