Much needed video! I'm doing my last year in Medicine. When you said (2) Mental Health, I couldn't agree more. It is so tied with the 1st point of Sacrifice that comes with bring a Dr. Just 2days ago I was attending a memorial service (online, covid 😅) of an intern that committed suicide. Its so draining doing this job and one needs a strong support system and general inner wit to keep going. The money earned can't even pay for the sacrifice and downside of being a doctor. The vlog 💯 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
You are absolutely beautiful 🤍 The mental health point you made about not having time to take care of yourself because you’re keeping up with school is so true. It’s a lot
Hi Aus Moratwe. Thank you so much for this video. I'm still in high school and I want to go into medicine, but I've been questioning whether medicine is really what I want to do with life, especially considering how much you have to sacrifice and how career success only comes so late. So thank you so much for this video because it's giving me insight allowing one to make a sure, informed decision.🙏🏾
Hi Dr. Mo, It's my very first time visiting your channel and I enjoyed watching and listening to your video. It was such good information, I'll be sure to check other ones out too. You're so gorgeous by the way! 💐❤ Thank you.
Hi I'm currently in matric and I really want to study medicine at stellenbosch Did you have to write a Situational Judgement Test when applying If you did, what is it all about
Hi. I'm still in high skul. I just wanted to know that after studying the 6 years. Do u get ur degree that says u are a qualified doctor or must u first do ur internships nd community service? Nd while doing ur internships nd community service do u get paid... And when u do these internships nd community service do u do them at an academic hospital for example Steve bieko or somewhere else... And after the internships nd community wat is next... I hear u said job security. So after the internships they might be a possibility that u might be unemployed?
Hi Kgomotso! Yes we do 6 years of medical school then you graduate. After graduation we complete a mandatory 2 years of internship in a government facility/hospital. Thereafter we do 1 year of community service. Yes we get paid for these 3 years of training. Then after that basically you decide where you fall- if you want to specialize, if you want to open your own GP practice etc. But yes unemployment is real because there’s no longer enough posts for doctors
@@MoratweMasima hey Doctor, new here and here to stay, I mean your content is lovely! 💕Just wanted to also add that I heard the same thing broadcasted on SA fm last week and got really concerned. I think they said about 2000 junior doctors are at home still waiting for posts like what?! 2000 is a lot😔 man, there must be something that the Department of Health can do about this. Fingers crossed.
hey please clarify the job security problem, is it in terms of specializing or school leavers? like are you saying that there's no employment for new graduates or there's difficulty going into specializing?
@@MoratweMasima But after that you have to do 1 year of community service, then 3-7 year specialisation course (depending on what you want to do) then you still need to do an extra year to get your 'masters of medicine' at a medical school (which is extremely hard to get into, because of its competitiveness. Note that there are only 9 in S.A) I'm currently doing my '9th' year specialising family medicine I have one more year left before hopefully getting into med school
@@smartcowgomoo2356 Before you get into medical school? Yes we do have to do 2 years of internship and 1 year of community service. Then you can be a registrar and start specialising wgich takes 4/5 years
You are really sharing facts. I really wish I had personally put more effort into researching med school. I don’t regret it but I wish I was better prepared mentally.
ohh Moratwe i just adore you so much more video by video , believe it or not , i was also stuch between CHEMICAL engeneering and MEDICINE , like you i chose medicine in the end and here i am today doing the "famous" 2nd year as a matie, and ohh i also had my first ever panic attack this year
Almost about to begin the student intern complex and i could not agree more with the points you made, esp 1 and 2. Point 3 became very evident during the first year of the pandemic, thank you for speaking on it🙌🏿🙌🏿. The last point about postponing happiness until you get to where you want to be is definitely fruit for thought. Thank you for this video 🧡🌿
Hi Amanda! It’s always been difficult for me but these are just some of the things I can control and so help me: I try to meditate for 5 minutes in the morning, this is to control your breath and still your mind. I workout 3 times a week, there’s just something about exercise that has helped me. Ofcourse there are anxiolytics that can calm you down, I used beta blockers in my final year that helped me in my exams otherwise I would have been a nervous wreck.
this was a great video. u will never understand the sacrifice until ur actually in medical school putting in the work and dealing with the stress/toxic environment.
Here I am choosing IT as career because of the unemployment stats in this country, I’m certainly not passionate about it but there are more job posts in the field.
I have been in the IT industry for 10 years now. And remember that IT is very broad, please do some research and check which direction you want to take before choosing your majors. There is development. software engineers, business analysis, project management, IT architectures, the list goes on. Check if that is what you would be interested in. Do not choose a career that you may not enjoy just based on the high employment rate, you will end up depressed. Depending on the direction you wanna take, IT can be hectic as well. Believe me, 10 years into it, I do not enjoy what I am doing. I am in the process of transitioning
There are intern doctors and community service doctors sitting at home currently. They are unemployed because they have to be employed by the government in order to get their independent practise certification. If you don’t have that as a doctor it is law that you cannot open your own practise or work in private. As a result you can only hope that the government gives you a post. A lot of them have been unemployed since the beginning of this year. Keep in mind that we are in the middle of a pandemic and we need as many skilled health personnel as possible
It is also a recurring problem for the past 5 years. And yes specialising in the specialty you want can also be difficult, some people wait years to become registrars
We deal with patients dying 24/7 🙈 Especially now with Covid. I don’t think I “deal” with it. Unfortunately we are taught to dissociate ourselves emotionally a lot in order to cope. Even if someone dies, you need to remember that you did all you could and there’s so many patients for you left to see still. 💔
Hii ❤️ I don't know if you gonna see this🥺 But I wanted to get your advice about something,I'm currently in matric I think I really wanna study medicine but my marks are too average 'not too high or low' So I was wondering if choosing medicine is the best decision for me or should I just consider other options🤷?
