I may not be remembering this correctly but I thought that the Velaryons were also of valerian decent with there white hair and distinct eyes, that was one of the reasons th@t the Targaryen’s did not mind marrying them as much because they were also dragon rides from Valeria as well but not any longer?
I remember my high school football coach would refer to these type of incest trees as “family reefs” because they grow into themselves rather than out like a tree.
When i first got to know about family trees, I saw they used to widen a lot with each generation, but this one right here is just a straight bamboo tree with few branches here and there...
Crazy to see that Daenerys lived so many generations later than Rhaenyra. I can't help but think that young Rhaenyra in HOTD could very well be Dany's little sister, if you look at both of them 😄
i think a lot could've been avoided if viserys didnt get his daughters friend pregnant altho he was saying she was the next in line he also knew having more kids could give him a son so in my opinion the downfall of the targaryn line started with him
Really hoping George if he finishes the next book changes Jon’s. Name. Having it be Aegon when he already had a brother Aegon makes no sense. Personally I’m all for having his name be Aemon. Would create a parallel as Aemon also married his own aunt.
Just a few corrections: Aenys would have several children, first was Aegon the Uncrowned, who was killed by Maegor during a battle over the God's Eye, Rhaena who became one of Maegor's Black Brides, (who died at Harrenhal at the age of 50 in 73 AC after several tragedies in her life), Viserys, who was brutally tortured by Maegor after his family managed to escape custody, then Jaeherys I and his sister Alysanne. Jaeherys I had 13 children, but only 9 would live to adulthood (here are the ones you missed, Vaegon, who became an archmaester, Maegelle, who became a septa but died from greyscale after trying to treat children with the affliction, Saera, who was notoriously promiscuous before she fled to Lys where she became a concubine, Viserra who died from a broken neck after falling during a drunken horse race, and Gael, who allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Blackwater Bay after giving birth to a stillborn son). Rhaena's dragon, Morning, only hatched after the Dance of the Dragons, and eventually, Baela and Rhaena would marry, with Baela marrying Alyn of Hull (later legitimized as Alyn Velaryon or Alyn Oakenfist). Rhaena would marry Corwyn Corbray, a younger brother of Leowyn Corbray (a wielder of the Valyrian steel blade, Lady Forlorn). In addition to his three children Daeron II, Daenerys (who married the Prince of Dorne), Aegon IV had tons of bastard children, but there were four that really stood out who were known as the Great Bastards: Daemon Blackfyre, Aegor "Bittersteel" Rivers (who would go on to found the Golden Company), Brynden "Bloodraven" Rivers (who is revealed later on in the novels to be the infamous Three-Eyed Raven/Crow), and Shiera Seastar (described as incredibly beautiful, and believed by many to be a sorceress, one theory suggests that Quaithe, the shadowbinder from Asshai that Daenerys meets in Qarth is actually Shiera Seastar in disguise). Daeron would have four children, Baelor (nicknamed Baelor Breakspear, who tragically died during the Tourney of Ashford Meadow, and his sons Valarr and Matarys would also die during the Great Spring Sickness), Aerys I, Rhaegel (who was described as kind of crazy as he was known to prance naked around the Red Keep and died choking on a pie), and Maekar I. Maekar had several children notably Daeron (known as the Drunken, who died from an STD), Aerion (who was batshit crazy to the point he died from drinking a goblet of wildfire because he believed it would turn him into a dragon), Aemon, Aegon V (also known as Egg or Aegon the Unlikely), along with two daughters Daella and Rhae. Aegon V had several children with his wife Betha Blackwood, there was Duncan (nicknamed Duncan the Small who abdicated the throne to marry a commoner by the name of Jenny of Oldstones), Jaeherys married his sister Shaera because they loved each other (and because of a prophecy from a woods witch, foretold of the "Prince that was Promised" forced their children to marry), then there was Daeron (who funnily enough was originally going to marry Olenna Tyrell who was actually a Redwyne) who died fighting against a band of outlaws known as the Rat, Pig, and Hawk, (alongside his alleged lover Ser Jeremy Norridge), then the youngest Rhaelle.
Yup, Aegon V the Unlikely (aka Egg) got this moniker bcs he was the fourth son of the fourth son of Daeron II and thus very unlikely to ever sit on the throne. Alas he eventually did.
"In addition to his three children Daeron II, Daenerys, and Aemon the Dragonknight," sorry, you were talking about Aegon IV children here. but I'm pretty sure Aemon was the son of Viserys II and Larra Rogare was he not? He was Aegon IV brother not son. I could be wrong though
@arixel.9088 Yeah I just caught it when you pointed it out, so it should be fixed now, as what I meant to say is aside from Daeron II and Daenerys, Aegon IV had a ton of bastards
Sometimes I think Tyrion Lannister may have been a Targaryan (or Blackfyre more like it) due to the circumstances of his birth and parentage, as it was generally known he was Tywin's son, but there was doubt between Tyrion and Tywin as to his heritage, so that leads me to think Tywin's wife may have played around some and gave birth to Tyrion from someone else, and his 'deformity' may have been from a Blackfyre. Just a guess on my part, who knows really
I believe the tree was shortned to fill just the characters that have some great impact in it's progression or were shown somehow on TV. After Dunk and Egg series, this kind of video will show a lot more of Targaryens because people will see them and ask themselves where they fit. But if it was to talk about ALL the Targaryens, it would be very, very messy in my opinion. For those who knows them, it's understandable why they are not here. For thoso who doesn't know them, it would be confusing why mention them anyway. Like "this is Gael, daughter of Jaeherys and Alysane that was mentioned because she died seduced by a singer" or "this is Maegor, son of Aerion, that was mentioned only because he was rejected the throne due to his father's bad taste while naming him". See?
Vermithor wasn’t the second largest dragon Vhagar was (or Meraxes when she was still alive). Vermithor was large but not as large as Vhagar who was his elder by 80 years
They went from Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow(Aegon Targaryen) to Viserys "the peaceful", Daemon, and Rhaenyra Targaryen. We need to see and I'm assuming at some point we probably will, Aegon "The Conqueror" Targaryen and him having the swords melted into the Throne we now know. I'm also sure at some point they will revisit and pick up the story of Jon Snow in the future riding back down south to help Bran the broken from some evil or usurping new king to lay claim himself and take back the throne as the prince that was promised.
As a new fan of this series... Where can I watch from the beginning of this saga? (I watched the Netflix series), but I now know i was not close to the beginning.. help🎉
6:44 so I have only watched the series, but wasn't Dameon married 3 times? He killed his first wife in the series. I forget her name. Then married Laena Valaryon and had 2 girls. Then Rhaenyra.
correct: first married Rhea Royce (died from an alleged horse fall), then married Laena Velaryon (had two girls, and died giving birth to a 3rd), then Rhaenyra (had two sons, Aegon III and Viserys, later known as Viserys II) although the books vs show have some discrepancies
Thank you so much! Your presentation of the Targaryen family tree was perfect, just enough detail to explain the complexities that lead to the power struggles. Well done you!
The books are not done and you missed a lot of Targaryens in that family tree. We don’t know if Jon snow is a Targaryen in the books and the young griff still up in the air.
@shaileshpotula2870GRRM revealed to the creators of the show that Jon Snow is Lyanna and Raehgars’s son. Truly named Aegon VI. That’s why you can take at least that point in the family tree as fact. Even though it truly didn’t matter for how the show played in declaring the next king
@leo_lm1066Show me where George said that! He has never said that. I recently asked him who is Jon Snow’s father and there is reason to hope he will answer the question. The real shocker is who Jon’s mother really is!
Nice video by the way, i really love the Targaryen Lore. But i think there something needs to be change like, Gaemon and Daenys are actually husband and wife
Great video! One of the things that was skipped that I think is fun to point out is the Aegon II and Helaena's daughter, Jahaera, married Aegon III- Rhynaera's son with Daemond. The blacks and greens come together to continue the Targaryen family tree. Her son with Daemon, Vicerys II, also would rule as one of the best rulers in Targaryen history despite so much tragic loss of his family. Aegon III was also a good ruler, but was very sad if I remember correctly having watched his mother and most of his family fall during the Dance.
I just realised that there’s only 1 bloodline descendant left from each house. Jon - the last Targaryen, Tyrion - the last Lannister, Gendry - the last Baratheon. Only the Starks are majority now. p.s. RIP house Tyrell and House Martell
The books never said that Jon is Aegon. Idk if Martin has explained it or not but we truly don’t know who Aegon is yet. If I remember correctly Young Griff is suspected to be Aegon and sailing to Westeros with the golden company in the 5th book.
Kinda funny that house Targaryen still lives but not in the realm they forged, but within the area they fought against to defend their realm, and is now possibly the Kings or Rulers of beyond the wall and the free folk
From someone who read the books could I please get some clarifications, as I only watched the shows. I thought the whole Aegon’s conquer was when the Targaryens FIRST came over from Valeyria & took over Westeros. However this tree shows that the Targaryens were living on dragonstone long before then. That’s where I’m confused. OR was the conquest just to create a monarchy in Westeros basically as there wasn’t one before?
Now we have three Aemons in the family, one was the heir died by a pirate’s arrow and first rider of Caraxes, one became a kingsguard, and one became a maestar and refused the throne, but should’ve became king, when he had the chance.

Jon is not Aegon VI because he never became king. There are at least a dozen Aegon Targaryens but only 5 of them were ever king. One of Jon’s Half Brothers was also named Aegon but he didnt become king either because the Mountain Murdered him as a child at the end of Roberts rebellion
it's the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R. R. Martin, which was made into the HBO show Game of Thrones and its prequel series House of the Dragon (which is based on the book Fire & Blood, which covers the Targaryen family history up to a point), which is still ongoing. There's also going to be the show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which covers the tales of Dunk and Egg that are part of the universe that canonically take place between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
It'll be interesting to see if GRRM will stick to the television series version of GOT or will he go in another direction. He actually has the rare opportunity to witness the fan's reaction to the final season(s) of the television series before finishing his books.
The HBO version of the family tree. For those that dont know, though that seems impossible by now, many people are alive still including Danny who has yet to lose a dragon, set foot in Westeros or meet Jon. All we can do is hope that we will get a proper ending for all of them.

Less of a tree, more of a trunk
correct, considering almost none of them branched off.
And almost ended by a Baratheon hunk
I remember my high school football coach would refer to these type of incest trees as “family reefs” because they grow into themselves rather than out like a tree.
You can see they start to think about spreading out around the middle but it fails and becomes a trunk again
Yeah that's what happens when you mostly marry your siblings
Jon getting to meet and have long conversations with his great great great (great?) uncle and both of them not know is INSANE.
“Gods the writing was good back then” - Robert Baratheon
@kevindashidI read in his voice hahah
I'm just so happy he new he wasn't a bastard in the end.
just 2 'great's :D
I’m impressed you got a tree for them. I could have sworn their family was a wreath.
😅😅❤
😂underrated Comment. Flew straight over everyone's head.
😂😂😂
So dark
😂😂😂😂👏👏🔥🔥
When i first got to know about family trees, I saw they used to widen a lot with each generation, but this one right here is just a straight bamboo tree with few branches here and there...
True dat
This is how it should be.
@axdvx wtf?
@axdvx⁉️
@axdvx oop- bro is not a last surviving valyrian
Crazy how John Snow is literally the last of his family's blood. He literally is born from fire and ice, the north and south
Not true, he is one of the last known ones. There were lots of legitimate targaryen's
Wouldn't have been the last if he didn't murder Dani. 🙄
@leepoppop5523 you mean illegitimate
@UnfazedPhoenixDani was infertile after the whole Drogo fiasco so, he's definitely the last.
@UnfazedPhoenix he is still alive, he can still have offspring. Let's see what the next books say.
Crazy to see that Daenerys lived so many generations later than Rhaenyra. I can't help but think that young Rhaenyra in HOTD could very well be Dany's little sister, if you look at both of them 😄
In the books rhaenyra is a bbw
If your family tree does not fork.... you might be a Targaryen.
After watching this family tree video, I think I'm also a Targaryen😂😂😂
i think a lot could've been avoided if viserys didnt get his daughters friend pregnant altho he was saying she was the next in line he also knew having more kids could give him a son so in my opinion the downfall of the targaryn line started with him

That’s if George wants to make Jon a Targaryen in the books
That book won't be finished until Martin dies. He clearly has no intention of doing it himself.
He's not going to finish the book.
@geemac7267 then it will never be finished. If he doesn't write it - it's not the same book series. Do you understand how copyright works? Lmao
@nightlasher Jon Snow IS Aegon Targaryen
Now can you do a family tree of the dragons..
I heard someone say their family tree is a circle, and I can't disagree.
That is crazy to keep up with. Thanks for the history lesson, it helps me tremendously.
Glad to hear it!
Just a few corrections:

2:17 my opinion this is where the beginning of the end started. That conquest eventually exposed the family in the long run.
The beginning of the end started when Viserys married Alicent Hightower.
Vermithor wasn’t the second largest dragon
Vhagar was (or Meraxes when she was still alive). Vermithor was large but not as large as Vhagar who was his elder by 80 years
Exactly this, also Vhagar was extremely old
Meraxes was the second largest dragon during the conquest though
I'm impressed but I got a headache from trying to comprehend the "tree"
It’s kind of painful when you use the wrong pictures but otherwise it’s good
Wow, no Elia Martell, Princess Rhaenys or Prince Aegon mention? Oberon even mentions her in the show!
Riley I think you need to check the title twice.
Thats not a tree, thats a bush in every direction of the family.
They went from Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow(Aegon Targaryen) to Viserys "the peaceful", Daemon, and Rhaenyra Targaryen. @garialmarsh6721TPB+ TORRENT
Very confusing story but you laid it out in a way that I think I finally understand it! Well Done.
4:09 Vermithor was the third largest dragon after Balerion and Vhagar ... after the death of Balerion the secound largest after Vhagar
The Prince That Was Promised- Aegon VI
6:44 so I have only watched the series, but wasn't Dameon married 3 times? He killed his first wife in the series. I forget her name. Then married Laena Valaryon and had 2 girls. Then Rhaenyra.

Oh how I love Game of Thrones lore 💕
Great video. I connected the dots and found the answers to some major questions I've had for years!!!! You rock🎉❤
Nice that Someone was in mood for a video like this, i was too lazy to look through it
Thank you so much! Your presentation of the Targaryen family tree was perfect, just enough detail to explain the complexities that lead to the power struggles. Well done you!
This is excellent!
Nice job, well done
nothing explains Jon Snow not having silver hair
Great narrative of this family tree. Clears up some misconceptions for me-thank you!
good job
The books are not done and you missed a lot of Targaryens in that family tree. We don’t know if Jon snow is a Targaryen in the books and the young griff still up in the air.
Grrm confirmed that jon is lyanna and rhaegar's son
I never read the book so
I watched the show most people I know watched the show.

Aegon V had three older brothers and Daeron, Aerion, and Aemon.
Nice video by the way, i really love the Targaryen Lore. But i think there something needs to be change like, Gaemon and Daenys are actually husband and wife
did we mean to leave out the mothers from this chart lol ? coulda been useful
what series is this
Great video! One of the things that was skipped that I think is fun to point out is the Aegon II and Helaena's daughter, Jahaera, married Aegon III- Rhynaera's son with Daemond. Even this family tree gets quite stupid at the end, much like the end of GoT
Yes, but the fact that Jon Snow can ride an dragon is supporting that he is Aegon..
He is not aegon but most likely is the child of lyanna and rhaegar what they named is unknown
@_quotefuljourney_ he didn't ride a dragon in the books
Young Griff is a Blackfyre🤓
The complete family targaryen bamboo
Tree? It's more like a circle!
You forgot Saera Targaryen, daughter of Jahaeris and alysanne that was exhiled.
Kinda funny that house Targaryen still lives but not in the realm they forged, but within the area they fought against to defend their realm, and is now possibly the Kings or Rulers of beyond the wall and the free folk
That wraps that up then.
What about young griff?
What happened after Jon snow?
i already know this is gonna be a circle
A million thanks for this.. and good job. there's so much history here.
quick question.. what's East of Essos?
Yi Ti, the Shadowlands, and Asshai. It's mostly unexplored, but you can learn more in this video I made: ruclips.net/video/l7yAHit1XbU/video.html
Is this all in novels😮, someone has written such a complex story😮
Ah, the squares in the family tree
Nothing is more complicated than the family tree of Dark
HBO should make spinoff about Jon Snow and title is “The Last of Targaryen”
Can u make more family trees from Asoiaf books please?
Not at all confusing... lol. The explained history is very appreciated!
I am now up to date…tfs
Please, with what did you make this family tree ?
"Tree? I am no tree... I am a bush!"
This is pretty detailed... where is all this listed?
Now we have three Aemons in the family, one was the heir died by a pirate’s arrow and first rider of Caraxes, one became a kingsguard, and one became a maestar and refused the throne, but should’ve became king, when he had the chance.
Grrm is such a good fiction writer
Aerion was also the father of Orys, who would eventually go on to found the Baratheon line after being granted Storms End by his half brother Aegon.
This is info that’s 2 weeks late to the party. And miss represents many parts due to just omitting key pieces.
all i saw was a bush here
I wonder if Jon decided to call himself Aegon after all that
A family trunk only rivaled by that of lorne armstrong.
So now i know about story of the house of the dragon 😂😂😂
You skipped the best Targ king -Viserys II
yeah I mean he was Hand for 15 years (as Aegon brooded, Daeron warred, and Baelor prayed), but only ruled as king for one year, so as Hand he's definitely on the top 5 for sure, as king, if it wasn't for his mysterious death (which some sources have attributed to his shithead of a son Aegon IV poisoning him), he could've been a great king
I mean one theory I heard behind Baelor's death is that he may have been poisoned by Viserys II, for the "good of the realm" as let's just say Baelor was a religious fanatic and was believed to have been planning on a "crusade" of enforcing the Faith of the Seven on all corners of the Seven Kingdoms (which meant he would've gone to war against the North and the Iron Islands)
Thanks for this video. Dany going mad is so dumb. She and Jon should have been the rulers but no they wanted to be edgy
you skipped quite a few targaryen but still very good video!
🎉
"The family tree of Targarians is a circle" (Ewan Mitchell aka Aemond Targarian)
Rickon stark who is that i don't remember
The one Ramsey killed with an arrow before battle of the bastards
Jon is not Aegon VI because he never became king. There are at least a dozen Aegon Targaryens but only 5 of them were ever king. One of Jon’s Half Brothers was also named Aegon but he didnt become king either because the Mountain Murdered him as a child at the end of Roberts rebellion
So maester aemon was technically the great great grandfather of jon snow😂
How is Vermithor the 2nd strongest after Balerion? Vhagar still exists at this point?
Is this a movie or a book?
it's the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.
So john become king of the willdling now?
I don't remember there being 5 or 6 generations on dragonstone before aegon the conqueror? They were only there like a hundred years ??
Less tree more of a circle 😂😂
Im here for Pokemon Targaryen, Doraemon Targaryen and Digimon Targaryen, first of their names.
😂😂😂😂
love the video, but when you do these kind of videos please leave out season 8 of GOT and just use the books lol, season 8 never happened!
I thought Jon Snow rode viserise the green one not reagule

It'll be interesting to see if GRRM will stick to the television series version of GOT or will he go in another direction. He actually has the rare opportunity to witness the fan's reaction to the final season(s) of the television series before finishing his books.
Jon just make Uturn of his family tree 😅😅
So in the series dance of the dragons they are concealing the younger son of Alice hightower.😮
Well, he may appear in Season 3, as we do see his dragon Tessarion (also known as the "Blue Queen") towards the end

The HBO version of the family tree. For those that dont know, though that seems impossible by now, many people are alive still including Danny who has yet to lose a dragon, set foot in Westeros or meet Jon. All we can do is hope that we will get a proper ending for all of them.
