- The Asus Strix G18 with RTX 4080 and i9-13980HX can be undervolted! I found out during my livestream yesterday. I also ran Cinebench R23 with and without the undervolt. Ran timespy on the Strix G18. Played some Hogwarts: Legacy, ran a display nits/brightness/contrast test, took the bottom off and evaluated thermal design, and ran detailed temperature test. Great review! Got a G18 after this review, but only got the 4070 since only Scar came with 4080 in my country. Great laptop overall except I am lost as to why I seem to only have 4 zone RGB on my keyboard rather than a per key RGB as advertised. I know you get 4 zone rgb on a FullHD G18, but mine is a QHD Nebula! Big deal for me as the WASD keys are hard to see due to the weird transparency design around those keys. I was hoping to assign specific static colors on WASD.

I was trying to order this from best buy but they are all sold out since it was on sale for 2199, all the scalpers bought them and sale them way above on Amazon and newegg. So I bought the new 2024 model for 2600, it is more but it comes with 32gb of 5600 ram, instead of 16gb 4800 and 2tb ssd instead of 1tb. I'm picking it up in Oregon so no sales tax. I hope it's worth it because I canceled my order on an acer helios 16 4080 that was on sale for 1850, was reading people complaining about the software. Do you have any issues with Asus software?

My results line up almost exactly with what you got, which puts my mind at ease, especially regarding temperatures under stress! Still rocking the 2021 Strix G15 AMD 5800H(8c)/ RTX 3060(115-130W) hooked up to a monitor and it is still awesome! But mann! The 2023 laptop prices are crazy!
The 4090 laptops prices are ridiculous, while the rest of the lineup price to performance still remains unknown to me for the moment, so far laptops like this one has one of the best price to performance ratios I have seen with a 4080, so thats a positive note, just dont go above a 4080, thats where prices go crazy.

Nice video question though, why do some of these laptops not power on without the power brick after an upgrade? My g18 did that and I thought I had fried the mobo. But i just plugged it in and it worked. Now it turns on battery, kind of weird.

Gizmo, I am planning on getting this laptop, but it's RAM is stuck at solid 4800mHz, I've heard rumors that later on, BIOS updates will allow it to run 5600mHz. Is it true?

Totally sold it to me over the scar 18 with the side by side comparison and this video. Looks like good value for the money. However we only got the 4070 version of this in the UK for £2600 ($3200), which seems to be a bad joke. Guess i have to wait and see if the 4080 version gets released here. Or commit to the scar, because at that point probably the price gap wont be all that big between the two.

I received my Strix G18 today and I am very happy to report ZERO coil whine. Maybe mine is a later model or something (it has 32GB RAM) but I have been listening real hard for any signs of coil whine and there is nothing. I love this laptop.

I got the RTX 4070 edition. I wanted to ask if 90-100c CPU temps are normal while gaming. Otherwise the temps are always under 60c during normal load.

The m16 is pretty nice for the price. I got the same laptop. Comes tomorrow.
Just got mine unboxed today. Any chance you could run the FurMark stress test on yours? It seems this one has some wicked GPU coil / power supply whine right under the DRF keys on the keyboard. It's loud enough I'm considering returning this one, just curious if it's a design issue, or a one off problem with this one.

@@nicka8581 no, this thing is a noisy sucker, lots of coil whine when anything spins up the GPU, and there’s another fainter electronic noise even with the GPU off in eco mode when doing something heavy on CPU and storage, like installing Visual Studio I noticed today.
Still trying to decide if I’ll keep it or not, I think Asus just didn’t care as they expect us all to have headphones on.
Coil whine seems to be a common complaint regarding the Strix G18. I don't think it's a specific unit issue.
Is cool whine indicative of a long term issue with the laptop? Is it only annoying?

What is the max length of the NVMe drive? It looks like 80mm but it's hard to tell if that's for both slots.

yup. I don't own a Strix, but my HP Pavilion was incredibly slow for a while when a ton of apps was open, and an extra 16GB RAM stick solved the issue almost instantly
Waiting for this or the Helios 18 to be available in Canada. Might just settle for an Aorus 17X as I've been using a Predator 17 with a gtx 1070 for 7 years.
ive been using gtx 1050 mobile for almost 6 years now. 😅 currency from where i am is low and wages also low, even if ure running businesses, ure probably as high as middle class in developed country like norway for example. while there are people with ridiculous privillege here they are the rich.

Will probably be a month or two as hype and orders die down and the product gets released in more retailers.
Can you please see if Rocket League runs on yours? I got mine yesterday, exact same specs and Rocket League refuses to launch with either the Steam or Epic versions. Ive played everything from COD MW2 to Dayz without issue on it. For whatever reason, Rocket League just refuses to even launch and Im beyond stumped. Ive tried everything short of reinstalling a clean version of windows 11.

no, the 4090 isn't worth anything near the $700 premium over the 4080. just get the full 150w tgp 4080 and call it a day

I mean I guess I can assume they are since mine hits the exact same temps and get higher score… haven’t used hwinfo the 8 months I’ve had the g814jz and finally decided to check things out due to getting stutter all the time. Kinda freaked me out, thought I had a bad paste or something.

Hi Brandon, I need some advice on two Asus laptops. I am looking at the Strix G18 and the Zephyrus M16 but cannot decide which one I should go for. I am not a gamer and will be using the laptop for 3D animation and editing. The M16 has the i9 13900H cpu and the G18 has the 13980HX cpu, so the G18 is much more powerful and has the 18" screen. My biggest concern though is choosing option that is the most reliable has the best build quality as I have had endless hardware issues with my Asus Zephyrus 16 to the point where I had to return it for a refund after experiencing 4 breakdowns in only 3 months!
So...I am looking for something powerful but simpler in design with less that can fail/break. I'm also not a big fan of the RGB bar lighting so a simpler design would be great, but I also don't want to sacrifice a huge jump in performance with the G18 if it justifies the higher spec.
Which model can you recommend the most between Asus M16 vs Strix G18?

I paid nearly 2500 for a 3090 when they came out. Now a whole computer 2 years later is matching the performance. in a laptop, at the same price. Also the 13980hx is double the performance of my i9 10850k. Thats actually insane. Definitely gonna get one since i live over the road now.
thats why u never have to go all in for the best, cause for price performance they are not worth it. this year the 4060 mobile is surprisingly the best for price perfirmance.

@@jaredbasham2244 it’s not worth it because you get the same processor, 1k more for maybe 10-15% better fps on games is not worth it in my eyes much less when you get the performance you get on the 4080

I can't believe they chose to place USB ports only on the right side of the computer... what about our USB dongles for wireless headphones or mouses for example? THis sucks... I use Razer Blackshark v2 pro wireless headphoens and the dongle has a decent size, it would interfere with my right hand and gaming area

I have one of these laptops on order and have a question on display connections. I use a 55" tv as my main display and a 32" monitor as my 2nd display next to it. I like to use the 55" tv for gaming while using the 32" for TV and streaming services. I am guessing I want to hook the 55" TV up to HDMI out from the laptop, but I'm not sure what I should use for the 2nd display which is currently using display port. Do I just need a USB C to display port adapter or is there a better option for my needs? Thanks
You can use usb-c to dp or hdmi. Either one will work, but you’ll want to connect to the non-thunderbolt port if you want to maximize performance since the Thunderbolt 4 connection goes through the integrated GPU
@@GizmoSlipTech Thank you so much for the reply. I didn't know about the thunderbolt 4 connection using the integrated GPU. In my case, I wonder if it makes sense to use the integrated gpu for my smaller secondary monitor as I only ever use it for watching video. I only game on my larger primary screen which will be hdmi connected so I want that to get all the Nvidia GPU power concentrated on only that screen. I'm not sure if that makes sense? I'm not up on the latest connections as the last laptop I bought was a 1st gen i7 Sony Vaio. Primary screen=gaming, secondary screen=video viewing (I never game on this secondary screen). Just ordered one but I'm noticing that they have "feet" on each corner making an item like the IETS GT500 cooling pad useless for it as it wont sit properly on it. What do you guys think?

What are the differences between the Rog strix scar 18 with a 4080 vs a Rog Strix 4080?
Some main differences:
64GB RAM MAX (as opposed to 32 max)
4TB SSD MAX (as opposed to 2TB)
4 speakers (as opposed to 2 speakers)
Nice video, Currently I just built my desktop with a 4080 so I don't need this however probably around 2024, I would like to get a laptop with a 4070 or 4060. So I'm gonna stick around longer for your content.
Smart idea. By then a lot of cheaper 4060 and 4070 laptops will be out by then.
I'm holding onto my RTX 3060 laptop I bought a few months ago. It's a full 140w GPU paired with a 12700H and it's pretty damn good, and while it would have been nice to have waited a little longer and get a 4060 laptop with 2 more extra VRAM, I'm happy with the laptop I have. I'll upgrade by the 50xx series, though I may also get a smaller 14" laptop with a 4050 to use as a secondary laptop.
@aninfinitemindofmusicanddr1559 yeah I still have the omen 15 from 2021 with a 3060. I can get a new laptop and I'll pass down the omen to my cousin, he's about to start college and it's still in good condition, I'm just gonna repaste and clean it out for him.

I wish they had the front case entirely transparent, maybe even the keyboard. Does anyone know, would it be difficult to custom make something like this? I am not sure how risky it would be unscrew the motherboard and everything else from the top/front panel and possibly the keyboard.
is there a work around for HDR? I know the screen is Dolby Vision media viewing only but is there a mod to emulate HDR and black levels? This screen is so meh.
I have this laptop and had already bought a 1TB WD SN850X SSD to go with it. I was unable to find out if the performance would be better if I installed a heatsink with the SSD or not.
You can install another ssd besides the one that is already in the laptop ?

Is the CPU unlocked, i.e. can I mess with multipliers in throttlestop or XTU? And if not by default, can it be unlocked in bios like it can in MSI laptops via the hidden menu?
Asus told me it is locked down with Bios. I haven't tried bypassing it yet.

Hey Giz. I have this laptop, so far i'm loving it, but I noticed my ram usage is super high when doing basic tasks such as browsing the web or on a skype video call. right now I have 2 tabs open in Opera GX (including this one) a skype video call up and discord open, and my RAM usage is at 70-78% or so....that seems ridiculously high to me... Any ideas? it definitely seems abnormal when my other laptops were around 45-50% doing these same things....

can you compare this laptop with rtx 4080 to a desktop 4070ti? i think they might be very close in perfomance
According to the information I have based on the scores and performance, its about 20% slower, the rtx 4090 mobile is equal to a 3090ti/4070ti, the 4080 mobile would be like between a Radeon RX 6900 XT and a rtx 3090 in terms of performance. Overall though the 4080 is really looking like a much better buy overall, 20% slower while costing 1k less than the cheapest 4090 laptops, yeah thats something I would jump on any day of the week.

It's not rare to be able to undervolt at -130mV/140mV on intel 8 and 9 gen like the 9750h on my legion y540

I didn’t do a technical one, but I thought they sounded around 51 db for turbo, and max fans around 54-55 db.
From the noise I have heard in this live stream, I would have guessed 39~40dB. Therefore, let me suggest that in review videos you put a microphone and noise meter right in front of the keyboard, and you ensure that volumes of noise sample and your voice before and afterwards are at the same level, please, thank you! --robert jasiek

I hate these little plastic hinges. I broke so many every time i opened my msi. This is a big turn off for me since the cover wont close properly anymore and it just looks crooked
I have never had a Asus hinge break on me, but I'm sure others have. Not very common as far as I'm aware.

Laptop is starting to get a good amount of negative reviews. From dead pixels to the plastic chassis or the system locking up . Think I'll wait for the acer helios 18.Looks like it will have better quality. I've had asus Laptops in the past and they have quality control issues
When it comes to quality control, all manufacturers have problems with it. The people with negative experiences are the loudest, especially at launch. The key is to always buy from a place where you can easily return the product if it has any defects. Best Buy is perfect for this imo.
