thanx matt, awesome lesson, i dont care what the early metallica purists say the black album is amazing! such cool grooves and riffs in every song....

Yeah, I really love it too, but I can see why people that were more into the thrash-y side of Metallica were turned off by this album...It is a little over-produced too.

i actually like the production a lot more than and justice for all though, that album had arguably the best collection of songs on a metallica album but they ruined the production by taking the bass guitar almost all the way out and the drums also sounded so flat. the black album drum and bass sound was def an improvement imo, jason newstead mustve been happier too because you could actually hear his bass, lol.....

It's interesting...I really like Jason's bass lines on And Justice For All. If you turn them up in the mix to where you can actually hear them, they make Metallica sound like a completely different band. His playing was just sooo different from Cliff Burton's. It's kind of crazy. It's almost like they tried to force him to write lines in the style of Cliff Burton after In Justice...

yeah the mixes of and justice for all with the bass turned up sound way, way cooler imo, ive always liked the bass to be loud in the mix, obviously not annoyingly or overly so, but i think it is really important and i dont know why so many metal bands drown out bass guitar....but aside from the production ....and justice for all is a true masterpiece, probably james hetfields best work in particular!
