    The thing about the Beast giving Belle the library is that for someone like Belle, who loves to read, books aren't just material objects. They let you go on adventures and make friends. I saw something somewhere that said "The reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one." Also, Gaston and the other townspeople think Belle is weird for reading. By giving Belle the library, the Beast shows that he respects her intelligence in a way that no one else, except Belle's father, does.

    • @SRFriso94
      @SRFriso94 2 года назад +6

      And if you're looking for a version that screws this up spectacularly, look no further than the 2017 Emma Watson version. Where the Beast shows Belle the library not as a thoughtful token of his affection, but to show off how many books he has.

      @@SRFriso94 The worst part about that is that it had potential for showing Belle and the Beast having something in common: a love of books. Instead of bonding over literature, the Beast negs Belle because she loves Romeo & Juliet. Grr!

    I love that they finally got it at the end "Stories don't belong to anyone". Especially with fairy tales like "Beauty and the Beast" which moved into folk culture ages ago. But a lot of people don't quite get the idea of folk culture and stories that belong to everyone. We're so used to the post-Industrial world in which stories are created as part of the culture industry rather than just stories being created to be passed around.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 8 лет назад +2

      +Adam Hoffman The new adaptation is pretty bad though...visually stunning at parts, but it made the story even more creepy than it was beforehand. And not in a good way. I think Disney still deserves all the praise of the world for creating the best take on it.

    • @AdamYJ
      @AdamYJ 8 лет назад +18

      swanpride
      The point isn't who did it better. The point is that neither of these film companies own the story of "Beauty and the Beast". It's beyond public domain. Someone else could still make another "Beauty and the Beast" movie. Heck, even you or I could if we had the means.

    • @XanderVJ
      @XanderVJ 8 лет назад +4

      +Adam Hoffman In this regard we have to keep Copyright in mind.
      Because of it, technically new stories DO belong to someone.
      And that's a good thing in the short run. After all, authors deserve to be able to get the money and recognition for their work if it's successful, and not let other people to capitalize on it without the due consent.
      Unfortunately, since Copyright can be renewed, this has a negative effect in the long run. Specially if the stories are owned by corporations, who have it way easier to renew it.

    • @AdamYJ
      @AdamYJ 8 лет назад +9

      XanderVJ
      But I'm not talking about new stories. I'm talking about folklore. Folklore is a whole other animal. Before copyright was a thing, people used to sit around the fire and tell stories. Then the people who heard that story would tell it to other people and so on. And the story would change as it changed hands. It's for reasons like these that there are over 300 different versions of Cinderella in the world. I get where you're coming from regarding intellectual property law. And sadly, folklore doesn't really seem to be a thing anymore. But I kind of wish it was. Being able to share stories without locking them in place so someone can make money off of them would be a dream come true. Just imagine being able to bring back that communal storytelling experience free from greed and industry. The closest thing we probably have now is the creative commons license which basically states that certain pieces of media are free to use as long as people acknowledge where the original material came from. Also, supposedly "creepypasta" has some folklore-like elements to it.

    I think showing belle the library is a sign of respect. it's the beast taking what he's learned and saying "i respect that you're an intelligent woman who likes to read, he's all my books." is in contrast to gaston who doesn't think should be smart or read. I also get the french version of east giving his treasure to belle is a sign of respect and trust. both versions work for their stories.

      Actually it goes: Beast: "I want to do something for her."
      Cogsworth: "You should shower her in meaningless presents."
      Lumiere: "Non, non, we need something special which actually touches her heart...oh, I have an idea."
      And the point is indeed that Gaston in an earlier scene is scoffing about Belle's desire to read and tells her that woman shouldn't do this, while the Beast sees her reaction and is happy about it. And then gives her the book as a present.

    • @governor_explosion
      @governor_explosion 8 лет назад +10

      +Rex Mundane I love it and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I think they're flawed, all Disney films (and all films, to an extent) are. I think a lot of the hate directed at it doesn't come from it being a bad movie, but from people only finding the Disney films of their childhood acceptable-- when they stopped liking Disney, when it stopped being nostalgic, everything that came after was no longer acceptable, good film or not.
      I think a lot of Frozen's flaws are present in Disney's earlier animated work (like having plot holes, wrapping up too neatly, and not doing enough justice to the culture of the country it's supposed to take place in), but neither do movies like Tangled, Sleeping Beauty, or The Lion King. I mean, as Kyle said later, Lion King is an extremely loose view of Africa, just as Frozen is an extremely loose look at Scandinavia. But Lion King gets a pass from 20-something Disney fans that grew up during the 90's Golden Era of Disney, where Frozen does not.

    I never really got the original version of the tale, as it starts out with the Beast threatening Belle's father with death for picking a rose, then immediately shifts to focus on Belle's arc of learning to look past the Beast's hideousness and see the good within him...The 'good' that demanded the sacrifice of a daughter as payment for the theft of a flower. The story just works better with the Beast having an actual character arc.

    • @brandonspain12345
      @brandonspain12345 2 года назад +6

      The book was always about Belle's arc and like the 1946 movie, she's the one we focus on the most. The Beast was a gentle and nice man that Belle had to see. However, the original author made another book that's a prequel and expands the Beast's backstory and character that arguably surpasses Disney's. Basically, his parents were king and queen and loved each other deeply until he died and the queen continues to push to be a queen and raises his baby alone. A fairy who is merely an acquaintance of the queen, assists in raising and educating the young prince which she's uncomfortable with but can't upset a fairy who offers for help. And she takes full responsibility on the baby as the queen is sent to war, not being able to see her son grow up half his life. The "evil" fairy raises the baby with the queen nearly about to return home but is called again to the war again. One day, the fairy diapers for YEARS leaving the kid to take care of himself and leaving him alone and confused and missing her. When he grows up years later, the fairy returns and treats him inappropriately and refused to call her "mother" as she has developed "feelings" for him. He is confused and hurt by how she treats him and she demands him to marry her after years of helping him. The prince refuses and wants to see his mother again and not marry anyone and help is mom in battle. The fairy reveals her old hag and ugly self and he says "You hold me I should give my hand away without first talking to my mother." He does bring him to see his mother again and he actually helps her in war and successfully does well in battle. They return home but the ancient fairy appears leaving the Prince speechless to explain what's been going on and her marriage proposal. The fairy shares her plans to the Queen which she's life "WTF?" The fairy also explains she was always naturally ugly since her youth, she can only use her powers once a year to be beautiful for one day, after which she return to her true appearance. Even though he forgives her for rasing him, he snaps at her from the proposal of her's while the queen tells her she's too ugly for her son. This is where she cursed him by turning him into the Beast since she raised him to be handsome on the outside. The price/Beast can't stand and can't do much. And she tells them if he or the queen mentioned the curse, he will stay as the Beast forever. (Which Belle is the one who must see the Beast for who he is and not for what he is herself.) Unlike Disney where he's a spoiled best who had to learn his manners as a man, here he's a doomed victim until a stranger can love him and save him. Only for another, more nicer fairy appears to help him for months. Turning people who judge his appearance to stone and surrounds the palace in thick fog. The queen is sent back to war. The good fairy grants him wishes to make him more happier and he wishes for a rose garden. Which was why he was mad at Belle's father for stealing his rose.

    Seems like both are great films. One is more literal, but the French film has more fairytale in it. More metaphors and ideas. Stealing the treasure could be about trying to take advantage of someone's kindness, all take and no give.
    Could the beast's transformation be the moment when Belle stops pitying and fearing him and finally sees him as a person?
    And dammit, Kyle, you can sing. Kill the mouse was fantastic.

    • @magnusprime962
      @magnusprime962 6 лет назад +3

      BrotherhoodofXMETAS True, but there wasn't any real need to write it that way. We saw how she got there on the horse, if they cut to her back home we could infer that she came home on the horse. Adding in that glove just pads the story out with unnecessary exposition when it would be just as easy to say she used the horse. The point Jerk was making wasn't that it didn't make sense for the character to use it, it's that it didn't make sense for Cocteau to use it.

    Welcome to the arts,
    Strange and so complex!
    Images and words, set as free as birds,
    To revel and perplex.
    The tongue of human hearts,
    Disparate as can be!
    Never one the same, no one soul to blame
    For lack of fluency!
    So many bright ideas, that never get across
    Fall and slowly fade, yet still we're not afraid, of intellectual loss
    Still we throw the darts
    Hoping you will see
    Past the minds' divide, to the other side,
    Despite your fluency!
    For nothing's really quite, as worthy as the fight
    for human fluency.

    Personally, I never liked that Avenant and the Beast were played by the same actor, mostly based on the fact that Avenant tried to force a kiss on Belle in the beginning of the movie. Why would Belle want to spend the rest of her life with someone who now looks exactly like the man who almost assaulted her?

    I've watched this at least 3 times a year since its original release, and yet only now I realize the simphonies that sound in the background as Kyle wanders the parks... sound similar to "Be Our Guest", possibly having influenced it, forshadowing that "Stories belong to noone".

    Really enjoyed this review. I remember seeing, "La Belle et la Bete," one time on TCM and enjoyed it for what it was. I liked seeing the many things Disney took inspiration from it and is probably my favorite version that is the closest to the original story. I'm glad you did this because I was wondering about some of the thing in the film that kinda went over my head with what the meaning was, including the ending.

    This is one if my favorite reviews as a fan of Cocteau's La Belle et La Bete, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and Madame de Villenueve's bloated fairy tale. I appreciated that there was critique of the source material without actively shitting on it from both sides! And history and context were given a valid platform. Much respect for Kyle and Tony!

    The funny thing is, the live action remake tries to add in a bit of Cocteau in order to try and fix the "flaws" of the animated film and completely fails at everything. Bill Condon is not Jean Cocteau nor is he Trousdale and Wise, he's Twilight.

    I find it interesting that while many people grew up with this fairy tale of love conquering all and a woman bringing out the beauty in a beast, I grew up with a different fairy tale: One where the beast was the hero, and in the end it wasn't the monsters or the evil of man, or even the airplanes, but a story where Beauty Killed the beast.

    Comparing how people tell stories now versus in the past is so fascinating--Jerk giving his "real opinion" at 7:35 really reminds me of how I've been feeling about the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Undeniably all the Sherlock Holmes stories are classics, and I think I liked reading/listening to the audio versions more than Jerk enjoyed watching _La Belle et la Bete_. Even so, there have been so many points as I've been reading where I just had to pause to yell at the characters in the story because of some *seriously* offensive stuff.
    Like in "The Sign of the Four", where [SPOILER ALERT] the murder is committed by a native of Andaman Islands (one of the small islands off the cost of present-day Burma/Thailand) whose people are described in the encyclopedia entry Mr. Holmes as "...naturally hideous, having large, misshapen heads, small, fierce eyes, and distorted features." Not to mention the fact that they massacre good, honest, British soldiers when they're shipwrecked before _hosting a cannibal feast_. Seriously. I haven't been able to get past the part where the guy describes how he meets Tonga (the native in question).
    Anyway, what fascinates me about all this is how it shows how even classic art _must_ be updated--the two updated retellings of Sherlock Holmes are excellent examples of this. BBC's _Sherlock_ has its problems (especially in the LGBT department), but it sure as hell doesn't have fuckin' _cannibalistic natives of the jungle_.

    I LOVE that Avenant and the Beast are both played by Marais. Especially that Avenant is way nicer than Gaston: he actually cares about Belle and defends her. He's just vain and greedy and thus turns into the Beast. While the original Beast gets beautiful looks. They both reflect each other (the mirror theme again), and get the outside that matches the inside by the end. It also leaves hope for Beast/Avenant because he has good in him just like original Beast. It's not as black and white as the Disney version, it's for a more mature audience and made at another time of history.
