MrFlipperInvader782 Wow...I only knew them as a pop act, because I was still a classic rock kid when Iris became a hit, and didn't start getting into metal until the next year, which actually left me shocked when I found out that they actually had the first double platinum album on Metal Blade Records (not the fact that they had a double platinum on that label, but rather the fact that they were even on that label in the first place). I'm assuming their Metal Blade Records material is worth checking out?
As my broadcasting teacher said many years ago, even on songs like Iris or Name, you could tell they could just turn the distortion pedal on and rock out. And Long Way Down off the Twister soundtrack rocked pretty hard.
Yes, most of their early albums are more rock than most of these new bands which are represented as rock. Debbie Harry can give a louder scream than Joan Jett. She is such an amazing vocalist. She has successfully sung pop (Call Me), disco (Heart of Glass), reggae (The cover version of "The Tide Is High", rock (Rip Her to Shreds), even the first billboard number #1 including rap music "Rapture". She is not a typical super-vocalist you hear (Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston) but she has always sung the way it gives me feeling she means it. "Picture This", "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence Dear", "War Child", "Eat to the Beat", "Hardest Part", and many more are great songs.
Blondie?? Blondie isn't pop, it's still rock, geez. And Bon Jovi is still rock too, I'm sorry if they're not "too heavy" for you loudwire but they're ROCK bands ;)
Nathan Never they left out alot cinderella britney fox poision lol i can go on w glam bands i changed channel when they came on more slayer pantera kind of girl!!
Europe on Wings Of Tomorrow was basically light power metal(hey even Arch Enemy covered Scream Of Anger) and White Lion's Fight To Survive was darker than your average hair metal band, Epic and Atlantic screwed those bands up so badly.
But 80's hair metal had a lot of fantastic guitar players like George Lynch, Phil Collen, John Skyes, CC Deville, Warren Demaritini etc... guitarists from pop bands these days can't even hold a candle to them
Ew, no. Why don't you want the chart to be topped by artists that actually sound great, instead of some underground garbage? I'm not necessarily implying that Maroon 5 sound good.
KimChigglet, for once i agree with something like this, its too unpolished, its like some carbon thats yet to turn into diamond, it just seems incomplete.
are you ready If you've never had sex, little white bumps on the shaft of the penis may be pimples, a skin cyst, or ingrown hairs. These are common and they're nothing to worry about. Another condition that's normal and no cause for concern is pearly penile papules. ... Genital warts (HPV) also can show up as bumps on the penis.
That's not true.. they had Lemonade And Brownies (1995) and then Floored (1997), both of those albums have a mix of metal, rock, punk, funk and reggae.. they changed style on the New Direction album, where the first song is a metal joke song and then there are their famous reggae pop rock songs like Every Morning and Someday.. but it still had some 3 or 4 alternative punk, metal songs.. their next albums are the poprock shit that they are now know for
What's great about Sugar Ray, in my opinion, is that they didn't give a fuck about genres. You may have already had bands like Faith No More and The Wildhearts who could mix genres and even change style at a drop of a hat but they at least always had a main category they fitted into over all. Sugar Ray flirted with almost every genre possible for at least the first 2 albums and then filtered a little bit into sunny bubblegum reggae-pop but they would still throw in the odd punk influenced song (eg Aim For Me). Not only that, but some of their pop stuff would actually be decent (eg When It's Over). It is unfortunate that bands like them, Smash Mouth and even Lit (should have been on this list) just lost their way.
wes8723 actually it was the 14:59 album and they sold out because there was actually money in that and ironically made them more unique because there were a lot of people trying to copy the funk metal sound of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and you'll notice that a lot of bands that started with that sound evolved into a totally different sound, another example of this is Incubus listen to Fungus Amongus and then go listen to Morning View
For a band that turned into a golden turd so fast, Sugar Ray's Floored is surprisingly impressive and underappreciated. Definitely not what most would expect from a Sugar Ray album.

where's Coldplay, cuz they were a rock band but they ain't rock anymore, as their 2015 album A Head Full Of Dreams was a signal stating that they're now a pop band and not rock
This is all nothing - I know about a band that went from death metal to poprock.. no personal changes in the band - the same people played in their earlier days death metal similiar to Sepultura, but as time went on they changed to what ever was popular : from death metal to grunge, from grunge to alternative rock, from alternative rock to shit poprock.. that band is Slovakian band Gladiator Just listen to one of their first major songs in their career: MY WORLD ruclips.net/video/YKsgmHnFFrE/видео.html And then after 6 years this is how they ended up playing: Medulienka ruclips.net/video/xDhqoYKM5NA/видео.html
I don't think BonJovi ever really changed they were always pop-rock. In the 80's, we called them chick rock. Before Hair Metal hit the scene, guys had Bon Jovi tapes in the car because the girls liked it. And Blondie's style was all over the place from the very first album.
LOL...Maroon Jam, Maroon In Chains, Maroongarden, Maroonhoney, Marvana...just trying to blend in with the times (like bush, silverchair, stone temple pilots, nickleback)

samuelrocksbet Yeah, I remember when Lemonade and Brownies came out, and songs like Mean Machine, The Club and Speed Home California were used on Road Rash 3D, and in 96, 10 Seconds Down was used in Escape From LA (and on the Soundtrack)
Canadian pop singer lights started out fronting a nu metal band (Shovel face) in high school, and during the early years of her pop career she collaborated with several post hardcore/metalcore bands
Vicious Friendly Fish they didn’t necessarily start off bad. And if you’ve ever heard them cover a heavier song, they’re surprisingly adept. They just went where the money is
I heard one new song not so long ago and it was surprisingly heavy. It's more that they always got lumbered with Creed (due to sounding quite like them) who were at one time the butt of all jokes and they became the next big butt of all jokes. It was "attempted grunge" and way after "grunge" was popular so it was a little out of place. Same for Puddle Of Mudd and Staind. They may have all had their mainstream success but at the same time seemed like teeny-bop to most rock fans.

Vicious Friendly Fish Have you not listened to them now vs Opus era ? They used to sound doomy like Sabbath now Its a big solo production where band mates are probs and everything is backtracked af including vocals.
No they aren't. There is a BIG difference between change and selling out. Ghost doesn't sound anything like the popular music on top 40 radio, so I don't really understand where it is that you would say this
I swear when I first saw this video the go his where on this video they doing almost Ramones style punk I have never cared for them their not terrible but just never cared but I swear they where in this video
Pop rock/alt pop group PVRIS qualifies, they started as the metalcore band operation guillotine, then did a post hardcore/pop punk ep as Paris before adopting their current name and style
SO maroon 5 thought they were pearl jam? LOL
Richard Herzog my thoughts exactly 😂😂
I was going to make a similar comment...
I was about to say the same XD
The most shocking clip on this list was certainly them. Wtf level over 9000
Pearl Jam suck compared to Maroon
Goo Goo Dolls were once on Metal Blade Records.
Wrap your brain around that for a moment.
*MINDFUCKED..
I heard Brian Slagel mention that in an interview and it blew me away. And he personally decides every artist that gets on the label too
MrFlipperInvader782 Wow...I only knew them as a pop act, because I was still a classic rock kid when Iris became a hit, and didn't start getting into metal until the next year, which actually left me shocked when I found out that they actually had the first double platinum album on Metal Blade Records (not the fact that they had a double platinum on that label, but rather the fact that they were even on that label in the first place). . . .
As my broadcasting teacher said many years ago, even on songs like Iris or Name, you could tell they could just turn the distortion pedal on and rock out. And Long Way Down off the Twister soundtrack rocked pretty hard.
So at some point Maroon 5 was actually trying to play music. Good to know.
Songs About Jane was rock
Then they got a hold of Adam Levine; the other guys are piggybacking off of him; and there you have it.
Yeah and fuck everything after their first album.....
At one point Maroon 5 werent so shite and annoying sounding
That was a big surprise to hear some groovy stuff
Okay next "Rock Acts who used to pop"
CakTo3006 Any examples?
SEiMEi kid rock...he was hip hop then changed to hard rock...only few examples out there
Pantera too, they were glam and turned trash-groove metal
Ministry. They started out as bop bop beep bop.
SEiMEi listen to Ministry's Halloween, then listen to Thieves.
It still makes my head spin that Goo Goo Dolls were signed to Metal Blade early in their career
Gwen Stefani was the saddest loss... she was a pretty unique frontwoman.
Maroon 5 in chains
Busdude97 more like pearl jam😂
LoL, oh yea definitely, Pearl 5!
Busdude97 maroon jam
Marrongarden
Busdude97 nah nah, poor Layne😂
What alternate universe is this???
Lone Wolf earth 2 I guess
Moises Jhon Gencianeo Earth 2
The one where Metallica is still considered metal and all the "news" is really propaganda.
Lone Wolf, the universe where Kurt lived, Hillary won, and femdom became mainstream...
Im good where I'm at.

👆 This guy just described HELL 🔥😈
Blondie always rocked
Lowgain agreed
Lowgain, ikr? That was just another of Loudwire's proverbial shot in the foot.
Yes, most of their early albums are more rock than most of these new bands which are represented as rock. Debbie Harry can give a louder scream than Joan Jett. She is such an amazing vocalist. Reijo P., there's nothing pop about Call Me and nothing disco about Heart Of Glass, the rock structure is always present in both of them.
Chuck Schuldiner wore a Blondie shirt in a Death gig. That's all you need to know
This version of Maroon 5 both sounds and looks way more awesome than they do today.
They were actually good once
Maroon 5 was actually a good band at the start. They're not today. They're barely even a band.
I miss the punk ska no doubt
toebarr that’s the best stuff they did. I love it
Yeah.
When they were a BAND
instead of a GROUPIE THOT with backing musicians.
Same
@tre coolio funny you say that lol your pic is of sublime but yet sublime collaborated with Gwen lol
@tre coolio Bradley Nowell sold his life for fame
Is Maroon 5 even a band anymore? They've recently been sounding more like an EDM act.
After Moves Like Jagger Levine make M5 he's solo project
Same as 30 seconds to mars
The Beastie Boys. They used to play hardcore punk
The Unknown Psycho I actually bought their Aglio E Olio album that came out I think in the late 90's, it was all old school hardcore tracks
Egg raid on mojo.
Beastie Boys is dope!
I thought skrillex was the guy who makes weird noises??
That sounds like something a grandpa would say.
2012 want your joke back
Michael Bolton actually auditioned to be in Black Sabbath after Dio left the first time
Theo Stadick before Bolton went solo he was in Blackjack. Sorta rocked
Bolton in Sabbath would be hilarious af lol
Blondie?? Blondie isn't pop, it's still rock, geez. And Bon Jovi is still rock too, I'm sorry if they're not "too heavy" for you loudwire but they're ROCK bands ;)
You aren't REALLY a Green Day fan, are you?
New wave is also a pop genre as well as a rock genre.
Have you seen/heard Jon Bon Jovi, lately? He's more of a hip hop artist, now, it's more talking than singing, what he does.
@@ioeee7563 What drug are you on?

Gwen Stefani used to have such an iconic and unique style

Fun fact: That band that Daft Punk's members used to be in featured a third member who would later be the guitar player of Phoenix.
They're not a techno band. The album Random Access Memories (RAM) is almost entirely made up of recorded instruments not midi programming

Man, I'm rock and metal head but I love their Discovery album.. Digital Love has some great guitar solos too..
I never knew daft punk use to be a rock band.
Gwen Stefani is still amazing though. I prefer her rock sound but her pop music is just as amazing imo
Gwen Stefani broke up No Doubt to join the ranks of the Dark side.
Didn’t know no doubt once dabbled in skacore, sounds pretty awesome
Blonde will always be a fucking iconic rock chick
Finally a good list
Slowly Ghost B.C is making its way to this list.
...how?
May Papa drag your sorry soul to Hell.
Vicious Friendly Fish Have you not listened to them now vs Opus era ? They used to sound doomy like Sabbath now Its a big solo production where band mates are probs and everything is backtracked af including vocals.

To be fair, they've been using backing tracks since the very beginning.
No they aren't. There is a BIG difference between change and selling out. Ghost doesn't sound anything like the popular music on top 40 radio, so I don't really understand where it is that you would say this
I would mention the german musician Casper but, well, since last year, he rocks again xD
Linkin Park
Bring Me The Horizon
Blondie still Rocks. Love The Go Go's.
I swear when I first saw this video the go his where on this video they doing almost Ramones style punk I have never cared for them their not terrible but just never cared but I swear they where in this video
Blondie was never pop always Punk
Well, they also incorporated disco and new wave, but yeah, they generally rocked.
Pop rock/alt pop group PVRIS qualifies, they started as the metalcore band operation guillotine, then did a post hardcore/pop punk ep as Paris before adopting their current name and style
Bon Jovi? Tf
I must know what song that was they showed for Maroon 5.
They were called Kara's Flowers back then - they had an album out, but the songs weren't as heavy as this one.
Give me love
