It is April 7th in Ohio and our three-year-old ornamental cherry tree looks like it needs some attention. Your tutorial is excellent! It's straight to the point unlike so many of the other videos. You are very specific. You understand how reluctant amateurs are to cut anything off because we don't want to hurt the tree. Thank you.

Be strong! You can do it, and thanks for watching. Of course ornamental trees do not require as much pruning as fruit producing trees.

Thank you, Sir. In all these years I have never done a weeping tree of any size or spp.
For years I drove by a mature weeping willow daily. I used to ask myself what I would do with that tree. And any time they pruned it, which wasn't much, I would check it out.
So this video has been instructive. And you reminded me of the basic pruning rules that still apply.
Thus this ramble is just an effort to express appreciation.

One of the great things about gardening and yardwork is that we slow down and can enjoy the nature will often miss. Thank you for visiting the channel.

This is great info! I purchased one of these 2 weeks ago and its still very young, we are coming into winter here in Australia so is it normal for the tree to drop all its leafs? I have no experience in gardening so i am keen to learn.

    • @GaryHeilig

Weeping cherries are deciduous trees. They drop their leaves during the winter months.

Hi there! Sir, it's amazing how did you formed the cherry three, so it grows as you say weepy branches? I beg your pardon, I didn't get it, might it be special sort/race of cherry tree?

I just bought 2 weeping cherry trees . The seller is no help whatsoever. Almost every bud had gotten frost bite and they crumble right off . But the tree is still alive . I wanna trim the dead off the tips of the branches . How to I tell when I’ve hit live tissue ? My plan is to trim all the dead off and let it start fresh . Thanks so much 😊

thank you for your video. I recently found a lot of white caterpillars inside the stem of the tree, and half of the stem already gone. Is there any way to save the tree? Thank you

So the roots don't bother a house? How is the root system I have a baby one that I bought from burges that I have in a pot and I've been wanting to put it in the ground but I'm not sure where to put it yet but I noticed yours is close by your house so the roots won't bother the house?

Thanks Gary. Great video. I pruned my 3 year old weeping cherry tree this past February before it started to bloom. Well, after it bloomed it lost about1/2 to 3/4 of the leaves on the lower 16 - 24 inches of every branch. Is this something i need to be concerned with or do you think it is normal ?

I have a question about my Weeping Cherry. I ordered it online so the main branch is only about 8 inches tall & it’s in a pot until roots are better established. It’s doing good, but when it started growing, at the top, there’s a shoot growing out from the side. Not sure whether to stake it as part of the main trunk or trim for the weeping formation. Can you help? I understand it’s difficult without a picture!
