When Nike signed Michael Jordan, they initially projected that his "Air Jordan" shoe line would sell around $3 million in its first year, which was intended to be reached over a three-year period; however, the actual sales in the first year ended up being a staggering $126 million.
Got the 5s in fire red and white with the black tongue for Christmas my 8th Grade year. Went to the shoe store just to look at Nike which I had never owned before, tried on the 5s and fell in love. Went home and begged Dad and he said, "We'll see." Standard parental response for us Gen Xers. Christmas came and opened a box and pulled out ONE shoe. Dad said I'd have to wait until my birthday for the other one. He made me wait until all my presents had been opened before he brought out the other box with the second shoe. Loved those shoes. First time I ever jumped and touched the rim was in those shoes. They had nothing to do with that, but it felt like they did. Cost $125.00 dollars back then. Wore them jokers OUT. I wore them until they were no longer white, took shoe dye and turned them black and wore them some more. I literally wore them until the soles fell off.
They took the Jordan 1’s out of the nba because it was a rule to have 51% white on the shoe. But the Jordan 1’s didn’t really have white on them at all
If you notice in the first couple of commercials, Michael Jordan had no dialogue, he didn't start talking until the Jordan 4s commercial came out. So that's 4yrs with no dialogue, and the shoes still sold out everywhere.
It’s called a “cycling cap”. Some people wore it for style and not because they were bicycle riders. Same way we wore ski goggles but never been skiing, or wearing a motorcycle jacket but never rode a motorcycle.
The Bo Jackson 'Bo Knows' commercials were good. Also the Nike Freestyle commercials are dope. There are 3 (2 basketball and 1 soccer, I think) but the 1st is legendary.
The 8s commercial was my favorite back then. Poignant because MJ couldn't go anywhere without 50 cameras following him! Topps or Upper Deck had a nice commercial featuring Jordan playing in the background and a young boy in the shadows imitating his moves- that was a good one!
If you haven't seen the Movie "She's Gotta Have It" you won't know the Mars Blackmon" character by Spike Lee who helped revolutionize the Jordan brand". Spike directed the commercials for Jordan. And if you really want to delve into movie history take a look at "Do the Right Thing". Both movies are excellent and still pertinent for today's world.
Mars Blackman was a nerdy character that Spike Lee played in his first movie "She's Gotta Have It." Mars wore his cap in that distinctive manner and Spike kept doing it that way for these ads. Spike directed all of those early commercials and did so in black and white just like he did with "She's Gotta Have It".
The Air Jordan 1s were banned by the NBA in 1984 because they didn't meet the league's uniform policy. The shoes were red and black, while NBA shoes at the time were required to be at least 51% white. - The Air Jordan 1s were originally designed to be red and black to make Michael Jordan stand out. - The NBA sent a letter to Nike, threatening a $5,000 fine for each game Jordan wore the shoes. - Nike agreed to pay the fines and capitalized on the controversy with a "Banned" ad campaign. - The Air Jordan 1s became an iconic symbol of rebellion and anti-establishment. - The NBA eventually relaxed its color restrictions, and in 2018-19, it removed them entirely.
Commercials with Spike Lee were the most iconic. Loved the black & white. Two Brooklyn cats (even though Spike wasn't born there). And it wasn’t hyperbole when Deloris Jordan told Sonny Vaccaro "A shoe is just a shoe, until my son steps in it." #GOAT
My favorite Js; 3s, 4s, 5s, 9s, 10, 11s, 12s, 13s, 16s The 8s were my 1st pair of Js. My Aunt got me my 2nd pair, the 9s for Christmas Short story: My Dad gave me an allowance of $10 a week to do chores around the house 🏡. I had to clean 🧼 all our bathrooms (2.5), wash 🧼 the dishes, vacuum the house 🏡, take out the trash 🗑️ as well as keep my room clean 🧼 Every week I saved my money 💰 and in 10 weeks I bought my first pair of Js the 8s after putting it on layaway with a deposit of $20 to start the plan. The salesperson cut me a deal. I was so happy to get my first pair of Js
Jordan signed his five-year, $2.5 million contract with Nike on October 26, 1984. The contract was a record at the time, and it was three times more than any other NBA deal.
It's funny to see a avid NY fan (Spike Lee) hyping up a Chicago Bull (Michael Jordan) for some sneakers. He did however shout out Brooklyn on his Brim though. 🤣😂🤣💯
They banned the black and red jordan 1s because they didn't have enough white in the shoe. The fine was 5,000. But Michael Jordan still wore them, and Nike just paid the fine each game. Which made the shoe that much desirable to us.
What was the 1st AJ shoe you actually remember/paid attention to when it actually came out? For me it was the AJ 3s, had the free throw line dunk poster with those on.
Didn’t have the 51% white in the shoes. Also to add he was getting fined $5k a game for every-time he wore them, imagine $5k in the 1980s was a lot of money.
The NBA was conservative and had outdated rules and principles, So when a outside company at the time named Nike (Converse was the standard brand) First made the deal with Jordan second didn’t unveil the look until the commercial was set to air. But NIKE believed in the shoe and Jordan they plagued to eat all the fines from the All-Star game until the end of the season. NBA folded when there tactics felled and the sneaker broke records on sells demands.
hold where is the MJ vs Bird commercials those were the greatest ones bro hands down and the like Mike commercials who put this video together they should be banned 🤣
It’s a marketing strategy, the NBA in truth banned another shoes called the Air Ship Pro with the Chicago bulls color way…And ah…there’s this channel called Nacho Average finds had a complete history of Air Jordan shoes…
The thing about his commercials are that they can motivate you, make you laugh or even make ya cry when you least expect it. They were amazing.
It's not a shoe commercial of MJ, but his 23 vs 39 Gatorade commercial is sick.
so true. like the older jordan playing against the younger jordan and then the NC state jordan lol
vs 39??? who is 39
@@g187um 39 being his age at the time of that commercial.

They left out the best commercial! Prime MJ against rookie MJ and Tarheel MJ
Did u know Jamal Crawford played the young Mike
@ yes sir!

The shoe commercials were dope, but his McDonald's and Gatorade commercials might have been even more popular.
The "Be Like Mike" Gatorade commercial and song was iconic.
They took the Jordan 1’s out of the nba because it was a rule to have 51% white on the shoe. But the Jordan 1’s didn’t really have white on them at all
That’s a dumb rule to be honest
@@JakethatSnake23 home uniforms were white, 51% of the shoes had to be white. Players look like clowns today
@@Сунђербобанi don't think so the pink shoes tho i do agree but other than nah
He still wore them n jus got fined every time he wore them n Nike jus paid it
@@koolshop1653that's when they made the 1s with enough white, he wore those
In the first year of his contract with Nike Jordan's shoes made $126 million. This was more than 40 times Nike's original sales estimate for the year.
19:02 always my favorite mj commercial, and imo, the most inspirational
If you notice in the first couple of commercials, Michael Jordan had no dialogue, he didn't start talking until the Jordan 4s commercial came out. So that's 4yrs with no dialogue, and the shoes still sold out everywhere.
My favorite retro air jordan is the retro air jordan 🎉12's-15's
17s was the first pair to cost over $200 and came in that metal case
It’s called a “cycling cap”. Some people wore it for style and not because they were bicycle riders. Same way we wore ski goggles but never been skiing, or wearing a motorcycle jacket but never rode a motorcycle.

The Gatorade Jordan commercials are probably better overall.
Watch the 1987 & 1988 Jordan vs Dominique Slam Dunk Contest in its entire.

The hat Spike Lee aka MARS is wearing is a 🚴🏽♂️ cycling style hat which was popular during the 80’s.

I will always find it hilarious seeing Spike direct all these jordan commercials but he was always wearing a Knicks jersey lmao
“Essential Jordan” look it up if you to react to MJ highlights with him wearing different J’s☺️
That Mars Blackmon character comes from a movie called She Gotta Have It.... And that's how he dress in the movie.
"Shes gotta have it".
I rock the cardinal 3s, the bred 4s, the moonlight 5s and the infrared 6s. 👍
I still have my Jordan calendar and a Illinois lottery flipbook from the 2:28 commercial.
MJ had the culture in a chokehold is an understatement 😀There will never be another MJ Goat on the court and of the court
1, 3, 4, 8, 11, 13’s and I’m pulling my 2011 joints out. Wade wore them back then.
RIP Humpty Hump.
I think I was 11 years old I got my first pair of sixes!..... 91' black and red radar suede joints
My favorites are the Infrared 6s cus he won his first ring in em and the 12s because they were my 1st pair.
These commercials were so much fun twitch during that time.
The hats were bike racing hats. Spike Lee made the famous when he wore it in his movies 😂
2nd gen air jordans...$100 back in the day. Being from chicago, I sported my jordans always!
Damn I'm seeing people that I didn't know were with Jordan brand
The jordan 5 shoe and commercial is my favorite. When I saw those 5s I was like gaaaaaadaaaaaammm.
I bought my first pair of Jordans in 1987 😂 Before that, I had Converse, Pro Keds and Buster Browns.

You should watch Larry bird commercials. He did commercials with Jordan too. Funny ❤
I wonder if Spike Lee gets a cut from MJ shoe sells because it seems like Spike was a driving force with these commercials. 🤔🤔

The jordan 23 commercial. That was his actual trophy room, and the

React to 1991 NBA Finals or 1988 all star game
1993 was good and competitive
1992 was good as well
They had a few other Bugs Bunny commercials for those sneakers

1.AJ 6s

3.AJ 13s

If you want awesome commercials, watch ALL of Charles Barkley's NIKE commercials!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Styles changed yearly.. just like now .. ..
Most people only like the retro Jordans that he actually played in so I would say after the 13s most people don’t rock with the other ones
AJ18 is my cut off point.
Brooklyn is on his hate because that’s where MJ was born so he’s paying homage to the city ..

I’m a Hong Kong local by the way
They banned the air jordan 1 original because there’s not enough white on them.
Now go look up the best commercials that they didn't show. Is it the shoes? Commercials with Mars.... how the hell didn't they show them???
BC It didn't have any "white"
Too much BLACK in the shoes 1’s
Dude I'm serious your ignoring me and it's not cool you told me you got me and I seeing everything thing else besides what I asked so
Buddy dont even realize humpty hump was in the commercial
