At 2:48 we have: 你多久回一次家? For me, this is the most difficult Chinese sentence structure I have yet encountered. The English equivalent is: "How often do you return home?" However, the direct translation is: "How long is your time for one trip home?" Since Yuyu returns home twice a year, the answer should be "six months". But she answers: 一年两次 ("twice a year"). This is an acceptable answer, because the above question is understood as: "In a given period of time, how many times do you return home?" So, the question's 多久 is answered with 一年, and the question's 一次 is answered with 两次 to yield: 我一年回两次家。 … An English speaker would be tempted to ask: 你多常回家?for "How often do you return home?" However, I believe this sentence structure is never used.
Yep, my guess is that the initial structure is “间隔多久回一次家”, where 间隔 isn't necessary for native speakers to pronounce in order to get the meaning straight away, hence discarded.
@@confach Yes, I think that adding 间隔 does help to clarify the meaning of this structure. Also, perhaps there was initially a 每 in front of 一次. Because, to have a time interval, there needs to be more than one trip. So, perhaps the initial structure was: 你间隔多久回每一次家?

At 2:48 we have:
你多久回一次家?
For me, this is the most difficult Chinese sentence structure I have yet encountered.
The English equivalent is:
"How often do you return home?"
However, the direct translation is:
"How long is your time for one trip home?"
Since Yuyu returns home twice a year, the answer should be "six months".
But she answers: 一年两次 ("twice a year").
This is an acceptable answer, because the above question is understood as:
"In a given period of time, how many times do you return home?"
So, the question's 多久 is answered with 一年,
and the question's 一次 is answered with 两次
to yield: 我一年回两次家。
…
An English speaker would be tempted to ask:
你多常回家?for "How often do you return home?"
However, I believe this sentence structure is never used.
