Not really. Just him. Doing Mexican accent should not be that hard, unless you need to do it from a specific area of Mexico. But a generic Mexican accent is relatively easy. What happened to Benicio? He is a good actor. He messed it up with that Colombian accent, being a Latino himself.
Viggo Mortensen (Argentina), Benicio Del Toro (Puerto Rico), Ruben Blades (Panama), Digeo Luna (Mexico), John Leguizamo (Colombia), Javier Bardem (Spain) - Although Spanish speaking actors, each are distinct in their own native dialect.
Benicio's accent in this movie sounds very Colombian. It's not Mexican at all. From the comments I see that other Spanish speakers also noticed the same thing. It doesn't take away from his performance, though. He was still phenomenal in this role.
I am afraid to say that even if Del Toro wouldn't sound too Mexican, it doesn't sound too Colombian either. For sure you are not from Hispanic Culture to state such a thing. The most Colombian thing in his accent it is the sound of the "s", softer than other Spanish accents, I would say.
Do not be bias, the whole movie is a gem. Benicio's story stands out because his character still believes his country is still the best. He is a true patriot for his country.

His role is supposed to be a Mexican cop. He might not have that accent but in the end he won the Oscar for this film. I was happy for him. He was great in this film. Now he's been in other great films which I believe were Oscar worthy as well.
@@oscarreyes7478 Es que el personaje del general Salazar es de un mexiquense jaja y después se fue a trabajar a tijuana, entonces el actor no nada mas tuvo que igualar el acento mexicano sino también el de un mexiquense de Tecamac.
Listen to everyone elses spanish in the movie. They all sound like real mexicans. Very natural and he sounds so different. His accent sounds somewhat like a colombian accent.
I know everyone is pointing out that Benicio's accent isn't Mexican, but did we ever know if he's actually Mexican in this film or does he just live/work there?
I always laugh at how Benicios accent sounds like a Medellin Colombian Accent or Paisa accent Funny because that was where Pablo Escobar was from Medellin.
His accent really doesn't mater here because this is an American movie and most Americans wouldn't know the difference. Same as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Colombian, Cuban, Spanish and sometimes Italian actors are all interchangeable in American movies. I actually think his accent adds a subtle comment about the cultural ignorance of Americans.
Esteban Mamba no supuestamente es un policía de tijuana...pero a lo mejor es u. Colombiano nacionalizado mexicano que trabaja de policía antinarcotico en la frontera..

ah yes, and then the part where he says "a little bird told me" .. ? That particular part of the scene is epic :D Can you write down what Salazar says next por favor ..? :)))
Benicio doesn't sound like a Colombian. That's the Tijuana/San Diego "pocho" accent. I'm sure he built the history of his character as "that Mexican border policeman" who must have been working "de mojado" on "the other side" and the pocho accent stuck on him. It seems to me a precedent that gives great credibility to his character. And for sure that made all the awards he won for that role.
I appreciate the comments. I learned my spanish - 2yrs in Nicaragua (yes I know it's shit awful to most people) but I could not understand most of what BDT was saying because of the accent. Been through mexico a bunch. Good to know I'm not crazy. :D

it's pretty close to a sonoran accent or chiguahua.
