I love Sanjay leela bhansali for his uniqueness. His films are hindi cinema in all its glory. The dance, the canvas, loud expressions done really well. He is a complete Indian filmmaker inspired by Indian cinema.
I agree Deepak. Sanjay is also one of the few contemporary filmmakers who are inspired by the classics and our own tradition. Thanks for watching. -Anupama
SLB is the best director hindi cinema has at this point. Guzharish is one of the best movie made by him, u can feel the pain of the character in it. Waiting for Bajirao Mastani an era which we always dreamt and now it would be alive on the canvas of SLB.... All the best to the entire team..
I was so happy seeing Saraswatichandra poster right behind him! I was a hugeeee fan of that show and I was very disappointed he pretty much gave up on the show after a few months because Saras & kumud were a beautiful couple. Anyway, great interview. Love SLB movies.
I am a proud Rajput...and I absolutely love Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This man is a genius of modern film art. The way he brings his dreamy vision onto a film...it is unparalleled. He has become a victim of too much false rumor mongering by politically motivated groups. India probably doesn't even deserve someone as ahead of his time.
These days I spend hours watching various videos of film companion, one of the few places from where one can actually get an idea of how films are made. After every video I not only get inspired by the person being interviewed but also by Anupama. You are amazing and truly dedicated. Thank you for this channel😀. You have made me your fan ma'am. SLB is a director of his own kind as: 1)The scenes of his films make you awestruck by their grandeur and at the same time take ur heart on a roller coaster of emotions. 2)No one in bollywood can depict emotional frustration in the way he does. This video made us know the cause behind both these genius features of his films. Thank you.
Thank you Aniket. All of us at Film Companion love movies. I have great admiration for people who make them and I’m thrilled to be able to chat with them about their process and how they create. So glad you enjoy listening. Keep watching -Anupama
I am watching all in 2018. I love discussing movies and the way Anupama ji give freedom to director's , actors, express their thought process is just superb
Every frame in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film are like painting , Amazing costumers , Superb song & excellent choreography , Fabulous Dialogue's , brilliant Drama , Top performance from all leading star's & supporting starcast ( A Perfect & fabulous Filmmaker ) No one can be Like SLB 👏👏 Awesome interview guys :-)
He is a good man. First time we hear him talk so personally, and it is very nice to hear. I wish him much success and hapiness. And I am so happy he found his strength and became stronger and wiser. BajiRao seems like the Best movie of the year to be honest. It shows effort, such fine detailing, engaging script, and stunning performances throughout. Well Done SLB.
i just realised i am just like SLB. the way he was neglected in his childhood by his cousins because they thought he was ugly, the way he tends to absorb every situation and finds it difficult to let go of ugly things that happened in his life. i am just like him. i am devastated from the inside. i have a lot of fire and angst inside me.
Watching this brilliant interview in anticipation of Padmavati. What a fascinating artist and thank you Anupama for shedding light on his...errrr..."light" side. I hope you will have another opportunity to interview him prior to or post-Padmavati release. My one request is that you also interview the director alongside his muse, Deepika :)
I can't get enough of him praisinig...last 3 blockbusters he have made are benchmarks for every other directors... 16:23-16:40 his words for MEENA KUMARI again took my heart... indeed she was the goddess of silverscreen...
This is an amazing interview. SLB is so honest and relatable and it's so great to see him like this. Great job Ms. Chopra! It is so nice to see what motivates his brilliance is experiences many of us have had ourselves!
I love SLB. His movies are magical. Such an inspiring filmmaker. it's amazing to see him acknowledge and carry forward the legacy of classics and literature. Bajirao Mastani,Black,Khamoshi,Devdas were fantastic. i hope film companion does a beneath the surface with him :))
SO GOOD TO SEE MR BANSALI'S INTERVIEW. I AGREE HE MAKES GRAND MOVIE. I LOVED ALL HIS MOVIES & ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO SEE HIS HUGE MOVIES. WATCHED PADMAVAAT WHICH IS OUTSTANDING MOVIE JUST LIKE BAJIRAO MASTANI. GOD BLESS MR BANSALI .
I have been a fan of SLB for many years now. Black is one of my all time fav. movies! His cinematography is pure art! I would definitely say that his work is one of the reasons why I want to become a filmmaker myself. I general I would say that Bollywood influenced me a lot! and thank you Anupama for this amazing Film-Chanel! I love the work you do and the way you interview people! We really get to know the people behind their amazing work! You are a true Film- Lover ♥ Greetings from Germany, Melisa
i have always loved slb's films. one can find pure "indianness" in his cinema. he is my favorite director, and it gives me more joy that he makes his films the way he pleases, and inspired by our own classics. always have and always will love his cinema.
I would never, ever, imagine that he had so much pain inside that he wanted to share with the world through his films. I've known indian cinema for a few years and I always had some issues with Bhansali's movies, thinking that he prioritized aesthetics over story. I still think he did it in some movies, but now that I know that every piece of his soul was in each scene, maybe I'll look at them differently. Great interview, Anupama. What I'm enjoying the most about this channel is that you can interview people without a time-limit, so the artists end up revealing more than the basic.
+Carolyne Thanks Carolyne. I agree that in places, it feels like SLB is putting aesthetics over story but what I admire is the rigour of his approach. Even in his most flawed films, there is ambition. And yes, I love that digital gives us freedom. Keep watching and spread the word. - Anupama
Thanks for this wonderful interview, Anupama. You've given us a rare, beautiful insight into the mind of a reclusive genius. Was amused to learn about his process-- especially the fact that he doesn't resort to a storyboard. Couldn't help but notice the similarities between SLB and Anurag Kashyap's flops (Saawariyan and Bombay Velvet)-- the nature of the failures and how they responded to it. Both felt that the attacks got personal and vicious on seeing top-notch, successful directors experience a colossal failure. Both also left the country (if I'm not wrong Paris is a common factor too?) for a bit, took refuge in art away from home and came back with a rejuvenated mind.
+QuirkBox I didn’t realise the similarities between SLB and Anurag but you’re absolutely right. The nature of failure was the same. I didn’t like Bombay Velvet but I still haven’t figured out what caused people to turn so vicious in their attack. Strange are the ways of showbiz. Thank you for watching. - Anupama
QuirkBox I thought the same. And the fact that their most celebrated scenes happen on the set. spontaneity and childhood traumas are a common thing too. :)
This was a great interview, the man behind the genius, Thank Anupama for giving us movie buffs intelligent and insightful interviews. SLB I hope you continue making movies, you are magic
I'm 5 years too late, but he is one of the very few directors in indian cinema who shows the true essence of india and its people and culture. Head off to him, but he should be making more movies
Ms. Chopra cannot imagine a person has layers in his personality- she talks down to him and is disbelieving of his complexity almost as if her opinion of him is what he is as a personality. Wish she understood human nature better...being a film critic and all.
Ash S She Knows More than You Do You ever think maybe he is pretentious Self involved he thinks his God. I don't care how much you admire him as an artist I don't respect anyone who thinks they are above God No thank you Some Of Us are too Smart For That ALL Glory is to GOD🕊️ ALL Praise is to GOD 🕊️ GOD is GOOD ALL the Time🕊️
guzaarish was so underrated. I absolutely loved dat movie too.. if he usually keeps d movies at pace they ll do really well. devdas din work cos it was too slow.
gosh...y the weird giggle all the time...and with no apparent reason.i find her funny and also y is he wearing kajal. ..everything serious deep talk and u see a man wearing kajal make you wonder if it's all an act.every said and done. .I still think he's a genius
its great to see that he creates what he likes but i miss the factors gave face to his creative vision such as Madhuri dixit, saroj khan, Aishwariya rai and Shahrukh khan. I wish his movies could again find the right factors to give it that beauty which he says Meena kumari had. I wish him success . Anupama you and rajeev definately do it the best. Pls do some master class or down memory lane with madhuri, Loved varun dhwans, rishi kapoors mami show.
excellent conversation and creative questions by Anupama. SLB is talking about one movie which he saw 18 times in childhood and later 6 times during his film-making career, may I know whats that movie name?
I am not a movie fan... But have been following anupama n Rajiv last couple of months for director / producers interviews. I am interested in viewing movie as a product and how ppl define and execute product creation. Anupama seems to understand this entire process so much, don't you feel like creating a story and telling it to the world rather than just analyzing it?
Sir you have to make padmavati ...what you want to make no one has buisness to do with it ....you are such lovely director..sir you have to make it.....hope you make it...and you will..
as part of exploring film making you must try getting raja mouli and raja koduri together for bahubali2 next year. we are waiting for movie making research
Mughal e Azam is still the finest and best acted film in India, and specifically Dillip Kumar’s multi layered performance is one the very best in all cinema!

Anupama to SLB: There is such a drama about the making of the film as much as there is drama in the film

SLB= The king of EPIC romance
Hmm if only I hadn't seen the original movie about Helen Keller that he lifted scenes from for Black.
+dia606 Black was about Helen Keller.
***** The person, yes - that doesn't authorize him to copy scenes from a previous black & white movie made about her.
dia606 the two movies are about the same person. coincidences are bound to happen
dia606
also bajirao mastani is heavily 'inspired' from mughal e azam
Devdas still look better than today's movie n guzaarish also look better than today's flicks, why?
Redemption, the word is redemption.
great creator!
