Shown a few months ago on BBC4-Top of the Pops from the year 1981: Here is Depeche Mode with the 3rd released single: 'Just Can't Get Enough' from September 1981. This was the last single with Vince Clarke, who would later form Yazoo with Alison Moyet. The single was written by Vince Clarke, and is the 3rd single on the Band's debut album 'Speak and Spell' which was released a month later in October 1981. Look how the band members use Trumpets as a mime visual. They are showing us as a group, what can be done in visual performance to truly make the performance memorable. At this certain moment in time, this fact is very important for the new synthesizer groups like Depeche Mode. The Industry knew what these new keyboard groups could create in the recording studio, but how this would relate to Television was a worry for Managers of Synth groups and the music Industry as a whole. Groups like Depeche Mode had a lot to prove, in making sure that visually, this new music genre of synth -pop was not just a passing music fad that would just vanish away like a puff of smoke. The genius of groups like Depeche Mode, is that they had their post-punk roots (or even punk-rock itself) to draw upon visually. Of all the British Synth Groups, Depeche Mode were the best because they never lost the fact visually of where they came from in Basildon -Essex (they really had a lot to prove in giving honor and pride to their environment were they grew up) and they understood the visual of Youth expression of the early 1980's, was just as important as the punks had given importance to Youth expression of the Mid-late 1970's. So this mime of the trumpets is very important not just in how they wished to be regarded as a synth group with real visual presence, but also giving credibility to their type of real synthesis in creating the sound of real instruments. All of these visual performance elements of Depeche Mode, gave a real credibility of respect to the group and also true credibility in general for British Synthesizer Music.
There is probably NO CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE for the tape recorder on the studio floor by Depeche Mode themselves. This particular inclusion I believe was from Top of the Pops TV Production Team. You have to remember at this time, this was a new type of expressionist genre of music, so unusual to a previous decade with completely new music sonic capabilties, the Top of the Pops team were just thinking out of the box in how to show this music as visual stage design. So in this case, I can only believe that the production design team would think the tape recorder would give an image of future visualisation for this type and genre of music. Production design teams would have a better understanding of British Electronica further in the 1980's when they were working on music artists music videos.
I would also like to add...possibly the true indication of adding the tape recorder in the performance, was Top of the Pops production stage design team of understanding the true importance of the music video in music artists careers at this specific moment in time. In the music video of this single; Depeche Mode included the tape recorder in the music video, so...Top of the Pops whole mantra of stage design was depicting what was included in music video performance ( because 'Just Can't Get Enough' is a primarily performance music video). This was understanding the representation between Record Companies, Managers and BBC Visual Design in representing the music artists to the FULLEST visualisation of the artists music videos for the number 1 British Music TV Programme: Top of the Pops.
@@rogerhoward7498 The tape recorder or casette player was a reoccurring staging setup of DM for video clips and TV shows coming from complains band having no drummer - no rhytm section visible, and still having the beat, just machines with keyboards. Where the beat comes from ? It was hard that time to explain how the beat comes from machines, where is the machine and where is human part of the sounding. Andrew was unable to play a single note, he was in the band because of Martin, and he (Andrew) looks so childish along with Dave pretending they are playing those toyish trumpets
My take on this single is simply, great sound, get up on the dance floor and have fun..love it.
For me, this was their best single ever. I was just 19, and anything was possible. The music was incredible in the early eighties.
I love how they all dressed for different venues, from full suit and bow tie to shirtless
Just love this decade and yes this great music too.
The good old days. Was 16 when this shit came out I loved it still do
I love this song! I wasn’t born until 1989, when the song came out in the early 80s.
Fletch stated they were not being paid at this time and he went to work the next day and his co-workers gave him kudos for his performance
This is my absolute favourite ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The days where Dave wore the most clothes in the band! RIP Fletch
Such a wonderful live performances of synth pop at it's finest.
Probably my favourite record of all time
Always find it amusing how young they are - just because of how sophisticated the music was. Especially for the time
Vince Clark just crafted perfect pop songs didn't he. 👌
Love this amazing track Yazoo style .
Come on Oldham ! 3 -2 today v Eastleigh . This is our tune ! Thanks John Sheridan for all your hard work .
Great pop song
My favorite DM song!

What's the tape recorder for?

Not exactly Tchiakovsky.
No, but exactly Depeche Mode.
Tchaikovsky wasn't exactly Mussorgsky or Rimsky-Korsakov.
It's catchier for sure
They were only 19 - 20 here to be fair. I'm not a fan of this, they got a lot better after Vince Clarke left.
Goddamn, this is gay
