It just turned 2023, the official 60th year, and I probably love this more now than ever. It'll be a very serious situation when this can't crack me up. Remember: *_the bird will always be the word_*
Let's appreciate the talent of The Trashmen, they took only 16 words (Surfing, well, don't, you, know, everybody's, talking, heard, about, the, Bird, everybody, knows, that, is, word) and a few random sounds and turned it in to an actually great song.
I hope that someday, a thousand years from now, archaeologists are looking to see what our age's arts were like and *THIS* is the only video they can find.
Love it. Reminds me when our son played this song endlessly driving his Mum insane doing it. I was at work of course and managed to retain my sanity. LOL
No one is talking about how easily you can make this video absolutely look and feel incredibly uncanny. Especially when he's spinning in a circle flapping his arms I don't know why but it feels uncanny.
I used to leave my AM radio on all night and sleep to it when I was a kid. I woke up thinking that I was having a nightmare for a second but realized the radio was playing the papapapapa ooh mow mow of this song. It was the first time that I had heard this song!
It is. The term "punk rock" was first used in the early 1970s to describe 1960s garage rock records like this. Then, in the mid 70s, it was used to describe new bands that were influenced by those 60s garage bands.
I forgot about this song but something yesterday triggered the memory in my mind and started singing it. My husband thought I was crazy he is older and does not remember it
The guy in the video was a Dutch comic and one of the Trashmen. After his performance, he was interviewed by Dick Clark and was so exhausted he could barely speak. (That vid is also on RUclips, somewhere.)
The Bloomington Roller Rink 1964, and I stood 30 feet from this great band. I thought the teens would go through floor. How I wished I had a dance partner!
This video is hysterical !! I love this music and would still take it over today's music. But when I see these video's, they just crack me up. I don't think you could get away with stuff like this today - In other words, they would just get laughed off the stage. But, I still love the music.
+donaldrocks101103 you mean to say baby goo goo gaa gaa isn't as good as this guy? that useless, brainless, talentless broad could touch the trashmen if she worked her entire life
I've Always Loved This Song!!! Now... Seeing The Live Video Was An Absolute Riot!!! "HOW AWESOME/COOL IS THAT!!!" WOW....... Thanks!!! Always ~ Joanne♡
Fun fact, that’s the drummer Steve Wahrer doing his best to mimic the manic dancing the trashmen’s singer would do during live performances. They could only afford to send one band member to where the tv show this premiered on was at, Steve drew the short straw.
Incredibile una performance storica, ineguagliabile. I Rapper e i Trash di oggi non sono nessuno in confronto. Ironico, performante, giocoliere e trasformer.😂🎉
Peter Griffin of Family Guy LOVES THIS FREAKING SONG! Its hysterical everytime he starts to sing it on that wonderful tv show. "The Bird" made it to #4 on the billboard hot 100.
In the 80s, rock stations in New England would play this song whenever they talked about Larry Bird from the Celtics. My sophomore college roommate had a huge poster of him over his bed.
Just how I feel sometimes!!!!!!! 🤣the bird , the word , hmmm? Much expression and meaning in this song. Always a favorite even though it was like many pioneers of music met with some reservations in their day❤
This song is incredible, but I can only imagine what the television audience of 1963 must have thought of this. It predates The Beatles’ Ed Sullivan appearance and those lads were starkly mild-mannered by comparison.
Carolyn Roesbery Are you brain damaged, lol? Cocaine was widely used for over 100 years when this song came out. Performers of that era would absolutely have had access.
Also, lots of musicians have used various drugs, including stimulants like cocaine, throughout history as performance enhancers and/or to increase creativity. Not all these musicians have been addicted, and it's not fair or nice to slap the stigmatizing label of "addict" onto them. Carolyn, you seem really ignorant, and you're clearly a bitch.
Wholy cow! Great performance! This guy is as insane as the song. Is he "The Trashmen," or is this an early version of "Lip Sync Battle?" Whatever. This nut made my day.
This was for a talent show in Dutch tv. The guy is doing a comedy routine to a hit record that was famous at the time. It's the first time he ever was on tv - a few years later he was the biggest comedian of the Netherlands in terms of popularity. His name is André van Duin.
While this song achieved success, likely on account of its quirkiness, the Trashmen produced an LP (which I may still have in storage) which, if memory serves, was actually pretty good and showed above average musicianship for the time & genre. I loved it back then. It's still fun.
This song is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs.
😂😂😂😂❤
These are the type of people that make being alive worth it.
This is the greatest thing humanity has ever made.
Stratosfear the God Peter Griffin would agree with you on that.
😕😕😕🤭🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
As good as it gets… 👏🤪
👍😁 🎯 💃🕺🏻 🥁 🎸 🦆
They are shit
A close second to antibiotics for sure 😂
I was laughing my ass off when he was pretending to be a bird and running around in circles
That was hilarious
This guy must have been doing speed. This behavior is not normal.
When the drugs kick in
Thats not the group trashmen. Thats dutch preformer in a talent show
@@groenekever: Only the end is André van Duin. The beginning is original.
I want this played at my funeral
i think that can be aranged 💿
If this ain’t played at my funeral, I’m not dying
Youre a sick girl Ashley.
So does Peter Griffin
Absolutely
One of my favorites. Years ahead of its time.... Ridiculous dance.
yes reminds me of the chicken dance in Texas
It is absolutely the way to dance to this!
As a stage performer this man was way ahead of his time.

That and a completely BULLETPROOF rhythm section!
and also the word “talking”
@@VladDracula04 Oh, Right. Thanks.
Tequila buff said lol. But this song is just as awesome. The great music is from the past
Same with the Beatles; they made an entire song with “i want you”.
There should be a 24 hour version of this!
Nicest
Peter Griffin would love it. 😆🦜
Lol yeah

RIP to Steve Wahrer (The insane man doing the vocals) Passed from throat cancer 1989.
Good then we are spared him singing this shitty song ever again.
🙏
Oh no 😢.
Sad, but given how aggressive his vocal style probably was on his throat, it seems like a pretty appropriate way for him to go.
I hope that someday, a thousand years from now, archaeologists are looking to see what our age's arts were like and *THIS* is the only video they can find.
It would be enough.
More like historians
Nah. Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up. Rickroll the fucking future.

the song is catchy! classics never get old
That's because the lyrics are philosophically deep and timeless.

Perhaps the most musically complex and beautiful song ever recorded. And lyrically . . . . very deep and reflective. Or Not
+dan casey Try "Hooty Sapperticker." Pure genius.

+Daniel Gunter The entire country went nuts over this song in the Fall of 63. The song is "Surfing Bird" by the Trashmen-a Mpls. group.
Haven't you heard?
Hmm, it was under my impression that EVERYBODY heard…
I feel like this is the origin of even today’s alternative rock.
It is. The term "punk rock" was first used in the early 1970s to describe 1960s garage rock records like this. Then, in the mid 70s, it was used to describe new bands that were influenced by those 60s garage bands.
