Oliver is my “thinking out of the box problem solving hero”. Such spatial thinking is rare. Hides nothing even his errors but more importantly his thinking as he goes along, unlike some from down under(!) no rehearsals it’s all there in real time, warts and all. Next job, make shorter centering cones? I see Topper in Wisconsin is using Nylatron (moly filled I think) for bushing. I used it years ago on heavy duty tyre building machinery I was responsible for and it worked well, cheap, machines easy. Other engineering plastics are available!
Often Ollie, components that use a split bush like this case, there will be a small hole drilled in the bush housing area. The bush is pushed in with the split very close to the hole. In this orientation, when the bush needs to be removed, a pin punch can be driven into the bush through the hole, this deforms the bush along the split and makes them much easier to remove. Retired fitter and turner here who really enjoys your work, Cheers.
@neilcollinge871 In my 30 some years. Not once have I seen such tomfoolery. What that sounds like is setting up undetected corrosion that will end up rust jacking the bushing. More likely you are describing a grease port that has not been fitted by a competent tuner...

Excellent use of the eye bolt and mole grips when welding up the pin Ollie. The line boring jig was a masterpiece in design and will be another useful tool in your workshop. I hear that Skegness is quite bracing at this time of year!
You could go to Australia and meet up with Kurtis, Karen and Homey, am sure you'd have a good time. That jig set up definitely worked, it should help you with loads of stuff, all you need now is a crane to go over your table just so its easier to move stuff. 👍
The line boring jig looks totally awesome, can you line weld with it too? Line boring and welding is so fascinating, a great step forward in engineering but depending on your own particular set up, it still has its limits. For bigger projects you can do the work on the Huron.👍😉 I have not seen this video before so I have really enjoyed watching it; line boring/measuring is much easier if you have a snap gauge.😉 (I know; I’ve said it before!)😂 All the very best to you, Mark from Scotland 👍
Hey Oliver. Next time you could flip the axle over to clamp down on the milled surfaces that were on the top side of the axle. Probably have to put a plug in the axle breather though.
Unfortunate that things didn't go exactly to plan with the clamp slipping, but you got around the problem and the repair was completed and all good in the end.
Another great repair Oliver. I look forward to sunday mornings to see what you have next. One thing that might make installing those sleeves easier is to machine the OD of the first few mm of the sleeve down to the same ID as the bore. That way it sits in there square on its own at the start. I learned that from Abom79 and it makes this sort of thing much easier. Thanks for sharing this job!

Morning Oliver. Funny thing, Curtis (CEE) made a fixture to hold his line borer vertically on his fixture table and you had done the same last week Great minds think alike. I enjoy the videos. Keep up the good work. Cheers David
I was just thinking about the way you had to clump that axle (4:24) due to the only machined surface being on the top of the axle. The problem with the way you had to use the 2 square supports is that without anything on the other side, you'll have the weight of the axle leveraging them out of square. If you had another 4 of those huge 90° squares (2 for each end), you could install one on each side of the axle with a support spanning between them. You can then lift the axle and clamp or bolt it directly to that support and be confident that the part is now held perfectly parallel to your line boring jig. You could then gently add some packing (finishing with some wooden wedges or some fibreglass felling wedges as they will conform to the shape of the axle quite nicely) underneath the axle in case something slips and tries to drop the axle back onto the bench. That packing would also help to dampen any vibrations you may be getting during the line boring operations.
Oliver. Holiday recommendations New Zealand😍😍😍, I went over to the North Island in January this year for a month. Absolutely the best holiday I have ever had, gets away from the miserable winter weather here to the height of their summer. The 4 weeks I was there it was between 27 & 31 degrees centigrade 😎. Stunningly beautiful place and the people are the nicest folk you could ever wish to meet. I’m planning to return their for another 4 weeks in Jan-feb 2025.👍🏴

Australia is pretty warm at the moment. 🤠 Depends on how long you want to spend sitting on a plane. Nice job on the jig and axel. Must be hard for the farmer to pick when the bearings are done and change them. Almost worth changing them after a set number of hours as periodic maintenance.

Looks like a great solution to difficult to bore problem. Designing a good system to hold the part will be your next challenge. You definitely need to ditch the screw clamps and come up with a bolt down solution. Perhaps a plate with T-Slots that you can bolt down to the table. I am anxious to see what you come up with, but it may be quite some time until you need to bore such a part again. That will give you time to design a good system. Great job! Regards.
Make support brackets that bolt to the prop flange and the half tube bolt faces in cases where you have to machine axle tubes or diff banjo's. It all turns out in the end, but it's extra work you didn't need. Aye, and check frequently! Vibration can be a right bugger 😉 👍
York is as good as anywhere, good pubs, good walk around the Roman walls and the Railway Museum for a good day out. Need I tell a Yorkshire man of those splendid facilities and no need for a Passport. Not much sea and sand though but plenty of meandering streets and river walks. It worked out very well I hope this fix gets the lubricantion it requires? I suspect this handler is used above its capacity as the axel looks to be quite new . Well done!
I think a handful of machinist jacks would help ALOT, be able to replace the 80mm box tube with a jack you can adjust to hold odd shapes up would be good Very very awesome on the linebore and restore of that axle..very awesome! Keep em coming!!!!

Oliver, how about a pair of big Vee blocks to down the work piece. Drill and tap a couple holes and use the hold down clamps you use on the milling machine. I vote for Australia. If not that far, we had a great time in Lisbon a few weeks ago.

You might need an inverted U shaped bracket so that you can bolt the housing to it and then secure the bracket to the table. An additional L bracket on the end would make the housing very rigid so it could not move.

I just got back from my home town in Florida after 3 weeks... November is the best time of year normally. Not too hot an not at all cold. Much better than the northern European weather... Just as you've made a jig for line boring, CEE made a jig for external welding. Both jigs are a great idea to make jobs easier to do.

Ever thought about using air chisel for knocking bushes out?......worked for me a few times (slightly modified chisel).....saves all that hammering

Looks like we're heading for a cold snap, you've got your cold weather gear on already , not easy to heat your workshop, even if you did when you turned it off then overnight everything metal in there will condense up, ask me how I know, took me a whole day to dry stuff off, lol. I just got back from my home town in Florida after 3 weeks... November is the best time of year normally. Not too hot an not at all cold. Much better than the northern European weather... Today is pretty shit weather out of the north.

The person who invents a MIG welder that doesn't chuck spatter all over the place will make themselves a fortune. I wonder what weight of the wire used ends up on the bench or floor rather than in the weld?
Pulse mig is supposed to be a lot less splatter. I’m wanting for tecarc to develop their pulse mig then I’ll get one.

Hi, to avoid dropping the piece when you part off, put a 6mm rod in the chuck and let it drop on that, love your vids

A trick I saw Abom79 use was to take an extra 5 thou off the start of the sleeve. Only for 3/16 or a 1/4 inch to let it get started.

Regarding supports for things like this, make yourself some engineering jacks, these are very useful in cases like this.
