The Yamaha PSS-460 | FM Synthesis from an unlikely place

  • In this video I have an unscripted ramble about what appears to be an unsuspecting toy from the 80s, but what is actually a half-decent FM preset synth based on Yamaha's OPL chip. There are a few videos online discussing this keyboard in better detail, but I felt the need to make my own.
The only effects added in this video are occasional reverb.
Apologies for the poor audio, my next investment will be a lapel mic.

Well done you are composing good stuff. As you’ll hear, putting a vintage instrument through efx sure enhances the sound including the use of the digital synth. I’ve owned loads of keyboards for years including similar ones to yours.

Dig it thanks for posting this walkthrough. I'm about to get into one of these for some grime and grunge fun with pedals on my next record.

    Nice!
There is opllpt add-on for PC with this chip to produce sound in dos games. I'm glad I haven't thrown away my pss-370.Now it only needs decent reverb and chorus!.
    All best!

I run my pss-470 through a guitar multieffects pedal and it's glorious :v

This definitely is not a toy keyboard . Many of these were labeled as such but surely weren’t !

Obsessed with the music of Sega Genesis, gonna look into buying one of these to capture the soundscapes of Ecco the Dolphin. Do you have any interest in circuit bending this?

This is definitely a great synth to get those classic chip-based FM sounds. I don't think I'd bend it in the traditional sense, but I would love to break out more parameters from it.

Check out the chipsynth md and rym vsts, pretty good genesis/megadrive modelling. Takes pgm files as well

Check out Look Mum No Computer on YT. Look for the Sega Mega Machine...all tactile knobs.
Been hoping for Sam to feature this Monsta in one of his songs.
