That bit about doing a backflip over the opponent got me thinking: the big difference maybe isn't in whether or not you arrange figures on a table to give a visualization, but in whether you have certainty or not. If you want to do a cool combat move, does it just happen because you said it does, or do you have to use some element of chance to see if it fails?
This is Travis; depends on the game. Some games are very cinematic by nature-the rules take into account what needs to be rolled for and what doesn’t. The games that require more rolls for more tasks are often called “crunchy.” For example, older versions of D&D are more “crunchy” than newer versions.
This is Travis; same here! I love collecting, building, and painting miniatures. But for some reason, I don't like using them to role-play in combat! If I keep it in my head, I can keep pretending that it's happening to me instead of taking it out of my mind and putting it on the table.
