    Dean's experience in hell is something that he brought with him until death and the fact that they didn't explored his trauma like they did with Sam's one really sucks. Actually, pretty much all the traumas that Dean went through didn't get enough attention on the show and that just doesn't sit right with me. He deserved better.

      @@angeloliver7613 Sam's trauma in hell goes all the way to season 13 if I'm correct and etc.
      But Deans trauma in hell ended up after Sam went to it, season 7 wrote a new trauma for Dean it only it just sucks. The purgatory wasn't something like torture or like that, it was just him killing more creatures to survive.
      Somehow Dean's trauma in Purgatory got the spot and he barely even mentions hell again, although there was one scene where Dean's says that whatever he went through in hell it wasn't worse than what Sam went through in it.
      The show should just have ended up in season 5.

    So...Dean or Sam, who had it worse during hell/the box? That the question.
    Sam was tortured by Lucifer yes...and I am sure that would be worse, but to me...IMO....Dean had it worse not because of being tortured, no just purely tortured I'd think sam had it the hardest, but dean had it the worse because he finally gave up...he said yes....HE started spending time taking people off the hook and began carving them up, making them beg and scream...until they were put back on the hook. That to me is worse then any torture that can be done to a person, when a torture person gives in to their own darkness and starts doing it to others.

      HarbingerofFire Well, Sam was in the cage for around 160 years I believe, so I imagine he had it worse just because of the duration. That being said, fans tend to downplay Dean being in Hell just because Sam was there longer. I think the torture Dean endured was worse because he was the Righteous Man and they needed him to break the first seal so Alistair really zeroed in on Dean and for 30 years he tortured him relentlessly (it sounds like there was never any relief). Then, Dean finally broke and tortured souls for 10 years which, to Dean, is probably the worst part given how he's dedicated his entire life to saving other people (the sheer guilt of giving in and torturing others burdened Dean with guilt for years after). Sam was in the cage with Lucifer, yes, but there was no reason to torture Sam other than for fun/out of boredom (whereas Alistair was intentionally trying to break Dean), so I imagine that there were plenty of times when Sam wasn't being tortured (it sounds like Lucifer and Michael also went after each other). So I think the torture that Dean endured was worse, but because Sam spent so much more time in Hell, it was worse for him (hope that makes sense?). It kind of bothers me that after S5 they hardly bring up the fact that Dean was in Hell at all, yet it is still regularly mentioned that Sam was in Hell. I really wish they wouldn't forget about Dean given that him going to Hell was such a huge thing for his character development.

    • @athira2966
      @athira2966 3 года назад +7

      I hate the fact that the writers just completely fit Dean's time in hell into one emotional monologue. Like that is it. They gave Sam's time in hell an entire season and more plus his talk with Rowena too! That time when Dean tries to convince Sam that he is real, he tells him how the hallucinations are different actual hell. He was clearly speaking from experience, he did have a hard time figuring out what is hell and what is real, but he battled all that own his own. I just wish they talked more about it.

    • @redcowcat8705
      @redcowcat8705 3 года назад +2

      I think Sam. Sam was tortured mentally, Dean physically. Mentall torture leaves traumas, phisical doesn't. Dean didn't need a wall. Dean even became one of the demons after some time so his torture ended.

    • @athira2966
      @athira2966 3 года назад +6

      @@redcowcat8705 Okay hear me out. Sam in season 6 says that even after all the torture, he felt good! He stopped hating himself and feeling guilty because he felt that he made up for it be being Tortured. But for Dean, the things he was made to do in Hell, just ate him away every single day, maybe to this day even. For 30 years he was tortured without a break, and then the next 10 years he had to do things to people that went against every fiber of his being and existence and it haunted him. So tell me, is the feeling of relief that Sam felt worse than the guilt, self hatred, and trauma Dean felt after hell?? Plus Sam had Adam/Michael in the cage with him too. So Lucifer wasn't always focused on him. The worst parts of Sam's hell was taken away by Castiel anyway. Just saying

      @@athira2966 Sam was souless in season 6. He didn't feel it. When he got his soul back he needed a mental wall to not crush into insanity. When cas removed his wall, you saw what a mess he bacame in season 7 with his hallucinations. It was hell away from hell. It was hell by itself. Dean didn't need such a wall to continue function.

    You know - this is one thing I've been very pissed with Kripke about all these years. How Dean's time in hell all played out. And the fact that he even had to go to hell. I do totally understand the reasoning for the whole story and what plays out over the years, but I really care about these characters and I want to protect them. This was just too much for me and I keep getting pissed all over again every time it comes up. And what's with the freakin' 10 years for every month thing. That's going too far, realistically. That part just doesn't make sense at all. 40 years?? I mean, how could anyone be sane enough to even put two sentences together after 40 years in hell? A lot was glossed over that they could have used, too. Him going to hell set a lot of stuff up, but I think they then just moved on without dealing with the mess they made. Leaves a lot to speculation. Yeah, I'm bitter - but I still love the show. This is just one big sore spot for me. Couldn't Cas have done something to help him by removing the memories or something?
    Oh, and the fact that the Angels are majorly to blame for all of it also Really pisses me off! They wanted it all to happen, so they waited until he broke before rescuing him from hell. So he could break the first seal. How much of a role did they have in what led up to him even making the deal in the first place, and then in them not finding a way out of it before he went? They got off pretty scot-free on that whole deal. Everyone loves to blame Sam and Dean for lucifer and the apocalypse out, but it wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the angels.
    Okay, I'll get off my soap box now. I want to go an hug Dean now, even though he wouldn't like it.

      Michele Long I totally get what you mean, and I agree. However, with the whole leaving the mess behind thing, I’ve got a few ideas. At first, they did acknowledge Dean going to Hell - giving him flashbacks and nightmares and they did that for a bit. If they kept doing that for so long, it would get kinda “boring” and played out for the viewers (I don’t personally think it would be boring, but the larger portion of fans prob would). I also think that after awhile, Dean kinda changed. Hell kinda made him a harder person - we already knew he didn’t really like to deal/acknowledge his issues (i.e. John’s death), but I think coming back from Hell made this worse. I just feel like Hell really changed him a lot and made more room for character development in many different ways. I don’t think they totally left it alone - they prob just made subtle changes here and there to fit that. But idk. Just an idea lol

    • @CoastDreamz
      @CoastDreamz 6 лет назад +4

      Lauren Mood - that sounds right. Dean did change due to his time in hell. I just wish the creators had done a better job of showing the connection. The show uses revolving writers, so probably hard to get them to do something that is consistent, yet changing. I just think they could have done a better job of making us see the connection and the process, instead of us having the deduce it ourselves. That may have been what they wanted - to leave it up to us, but sheesh. But the fandom is diverse, I've learned. What one person loves, another hates.

    • @ariafaline5221
      @ariafaline5221 6 лет назад +7

      Agreed. Dean definitely changed a lot after Hell, and while I personally don't mind them going with the "subtle changes route," I still feel like it was largely glossed over. Realistically, he should not have been remotely sane after spending 40 years in Hell, 10 of which was spent torturing others. Also, Dean was around 28 when he went to hell, which means, in his mind, he has spent more time being tortured in hell than he has on Earth. He should not be able to function normally at all. They obviously didn't have Dean as a complete mess because, you know, it's a TV show and in order to keep him on the show, they needed him to be sane and somewhat stable. Damaged but not completely broken. So I can let that slide. What really bothers me is that Sam's time in Hell has been mentioned every season since, whereas Dean's has hardly been mentioned at all. We have multiple episodes dedicated to Sam after Hell, but just a few moments here and there of Dean. People seem to gloss over Dean being in Hell just because Sam was there longer, but that shouldn't negate Dean's experience. I actually feel like Dean was tortured more brutally, but Sam was tortured for much longer. So, yeah, I'm a little salty about how they handled Post-Hell-Dean. I would really like to see it brought up in later seasons.
      I feel like S4 was a little too focused on Sam instead of it being split evenly between the two. I felt like Dean was dismissed a lot, and the writers made him almost useless. He did almost nothing the whole season, and whenever he did have focus, Sam always swooped in and stole the show (Dean's episode where he tortures Alistair still makes me so mad because it should have been about Dean, but they still made it about Sam!) Also, they focused a lot on how Sam and Dean's relationship changed in regards to Sam "going dark side," but I would have also liked to explore how it changed in regards to Dean returning from hell. Their dynamic should have changed as a result of Dean's storyline too, not just Sam's. I mean, Sam went to Hell for the world, but Dean sold his soul for Sam. There was no other reason. Does he regret it? If he knew what would happen, would he still have made the deal? What about Sam? Surely he was wracked with guilt over what Dean endured to save him.
      They should have also made Hell-time the same as Earth-time for believabilty sake. I think they wanted a bit of a shock moment, in that Sam (and us viewers) believed Dean was in Hell for 4-months only to find out that it was 40 years for Dean. That confession hit me like a punch, which is what they wanted. But they could have still achieved that by making 1 month in hell = 1 year on Earth, therefore making it 4-years in hell for Dean. Still realistic, but keeps some shock value intact.

      It pisses me off. No one even asked if dean was OKAY. What the fuck, it was SO glossed over. Sure, dean hides all his feelings but this is just to much. He’s strong so I’m sure he would make it through but never as normal as he is, literally he’s smiling and waltzing around after getting out like “yay.” Maybe his memories just weren’t fully back but... wow. Then the only scene after that where he shows any emotion is when he looks in the mirror and remembers getting tortured and his face just scrunches up a bit and that’s all. Actually, no one EVER asks Dean if he is okay, and not even his brother can see how much he’s suffering even now in season 14. He’s fucking depressed and it’s SO obvious but no one sees it

    • @athira2966
      @athira2966 3 года назад +2

      Honestly, I feel you. But the actual thing that makes it all worse is that Dean was never supposed to go to hell. Sam was actually supposed to save Dean from the deal. But the S3 Hiatus happened and they had to end it with Dean going to hell. So, the same goes for Cas as well. He was initially only cast for 3 eps but instantly became fan favourite. Now, getting back to Dean, his time in hell was just brushed over and pushed away just for moving the plot forward. They never actually cared about how it was all gonna pan out. Even after all these seasons, Dean going to hell is completely overlooked. And I hate it too!
