When you ship fictional characters you have to realize that unless they are explicitly showing interest for each other they're probably never gonna end up together, so that's where fan content is born, like fanfictions and fanart. By creating fan content and making headcanons you're creating something like an alternative universe where these characters are interested in each other. That is absolutely respectable and cool, it can give you so much inspiration and a space to express yourself and reflect on what about that dynamic just clicked for you. It becomes toxic when you try to push on the author your headcanons and expectations for those characters, expectation that are completely non-existent in the original content. Now with real people it's the same principle, kind of. Of course how these people act in public isn't how they act in private because privacy is a thing that exists as it should and they have every right to keep it. This means we come in contact only with their internet personas and even more what we see is our perception of that persona. It's like, having a friend that you've known for so long that you can kinda guess what they're thinking about and comparing that to a more recent friend, there's a lot of difference in how we perceive certain things. Since we aren't that close with these people (i don't mean anything by it, the respect and admiration for them is still there, but it's not like the relationship you have with a best friend) our perception can be easily influenced by other factors. So what you do when you ship real people, you're actually shipping your perception of their persona, it's so far away from the real person, that's why i think most content creators aren't bothered by shipping: it doesn't feel too intrusive that way. As i said before, shipping can give you a lot of inspiration, the dynamics, the aesthetic, and it's alright to use your fantasy if you keep it just that, a fantasy. In the end these are real people, if they feel comfortable enough to flirt and to make jokes they're probably friends and probably won't end up getting together in real life, so you should never push your expectations on them, especially because someone's sexuality can be a sore spot and you never know, but using your fantasy is fine and you shouldn't feel guilty about that. Of course this is valid only if said people haven't expressed being uncomfortable with that, in that case you shouldn't do it, no matter what, it's their public image, they make the rules. Otherwise, shipping real people is like creating this little world where something different happened and these people found a connection, different from the one they have in the real world. Your mind has infinite powers, if your imagination can grow by exploring an interesting dynamic don't let yourself be stopped. Your mind is a safe space, you can think whatever you want inside it and no one can ever ever judge you. What matters is what you bring on the outside world, that's where you've gotta be respectful.
