Your game has to be in a stable and playable state Day 1. The actual award isn't a trophy, but rather you just get a kiss on the head from Miyamoto and a round of applause.
i'm being completely honest when i say i have no clue where people got this idea E3 was cringe, at least not much more than any other event like it, Game Awards included. Maybe crowbat's video on Konami's 2010' E3 presentation got everyone think E3 was just like that but the only difference i saw between TGA and E3 is that you got the whole package all at once but instead of a bunch of people we never heard before that companies pay to hype up their games, now we have one guy we know who does the hype
I'm also on board the "who are these people" for streamers awards. I will admit I'm out of touch with streaming, but like, if they were worthy of an award, wouldn't they be one of the big streamers I've at least heard of?
Tinfoil hat theory: there are two indie categories because they WANT to give Dave the Diver an award for something, but it can't compete with the triple A's so it's stuck at the indie group; they added ANOTHER indie games category because fans would RIOT if Pizza Tower didn't win something.
Akums razor and all that makes me think that they saw the devs had weird non western/Japanese names and looked not white or Japanese so they thought it had to be an indi project made by some poor schmucks in some third world nation
A bit late now to comment, but jeff gerstmann has talked about the voting process for the TGA. It boils down to: - the TGA gives the judges the categories - each judge submits a minimum of 3 games per category, up to a maximum of 5 - if a judge cannot come up with 3 games they may abstain from that category - once all these are tallied and the nominees determined then they are given to the judges for final voting.
I don't get why Pat's freaking out about fan voting when developer voting seems more geared towards dishonesty and in the past we had people literally bring their wives or husbands and told them to vote for them. I remember the crapshoot that was literally seeing the last of us 2 win awards that were unjustified and in categories that made sense. Pat literally going "This is bias, I should make a bias version of it." Is dumb as well. if Pat had his own game of the year it also have 12 games in it. Cocoon and sea of stars were in the running- and are majorly good! And hearing Pat go "I don't know what that is thus it's undeserved to be here" The glass house is shattered into DUST!
I'd watch pat's train wreak GODY awards, with his bad taste it literally have 6 games in it. Remember when Pat said persona 5 was ruined for him because of one instance? And he said this about multiple games - one small thing turns a 9+ game into trash. That voting would be garbage.
I'm 1000% with Pat on the Ongoing and Esports categories. It's the same 5 games every single year. I think those two categories just need to be axed at this point. Also, all the usual garbage of the same games in every category, and things being in certain categories and not others seemingly arbitrarily. FF16 should be on best action, and as much as I love Baldur's Gate 3, it should not be on best score. It should be on best audio design. The sound design in that game is fantastic. The music? I can think of like one stand out track. The fact that Bomb Rush Cyberfunk isn't on Best Score is a crime.
13:30 , yes this is accurate. For me have watched around 90% of every Castle Super Beast clip that has been put out, consecutively for the past two years., and a prolly a 3rd from the old SBFP podcast over the past decade. I am sure this is the case for many subscribers, and even in this comment section I am seeing familiar usernames.
16:31 the only outlier is PUBG as it was a console launch exclusive for them in 2017, Hi-Fi Rush not being at all nominated was a big shock though, definitely would have liked to see it nominated over RE4 Remake.
Sifu being categorized as a fighting game is completely baffling to me as I thought the community was in 100% agreement that “Fighting Game” meant a game where the core gameplay consisted off competitive versus matches. P v P or P vs CPU. Smash Bros, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter are Fighting Games. A game that is fundamentally P v E cannot be a Fighting Game. Although if Sifu came out in the ‘90s, it would have been called a “Beat ‘em up” it is rare to see that associated with non-retro games today and Sifu isn’t supernatural enough to get the “Character Action Game” label.
How are we still making Millennial jokes in 2023? In like 2-3 years, everyone who has been classified as a Millennial will be at minimum 30 years old, that group isn't young enough to make "those kids today" jokes anymore. And Zoomers are right there, coasting on not having as catchy a name.
@@johnrivers3813I'm 25 ( gen z )and when I was in high-school I would do that and even younger , and I wasnt even usually that interested when I can just see it online but I am autistic lol, there was also a dumb nickelodeon or whatever magazine
Yeah the magazine joke fell super flat, as someone who used to get the American version of Shonen Jump every month until it was discontinued in America. I still have a box full of those books somewhere, and it's not like magazines or print media just evaporated even if nowadays interest is skewed more towards digital content. The grocery store I work at still has an aisle for cards and magazines, though I couldn't tell you how well they actually sell
Millennials just have the eternal ire of their Baby Boomer parents for reasons lost to time, they're the generational scape-goat martyrs sacrificed upon the altar of time for all future generations. It's also doubly weird to make those jokes targeting any generation younger than millennials too as the video game industries primary demographic is the youngest generations. It'd be like watching the Lego company mock children for playing with toys. I just don't understand the need to punch down at younger generations, especially over things like this. It screams desperation and insecurity to gatekeep things like this all in the name of some form of generational identity in the absence of an actual personality. Magazines are still very well alive and prevalent they've just adapted to the digital age and were actually quite suited for it due to their primarily subscription and ad based revenue model meshing nicely with the internet and its short form content catering to specific niches. Despite all that the vast majority of magazine subscriptions and sales are still primarily physical though digital is growing by leaps and bounds every year and I predict will one day supplant physicals. I think whomever wrote that joke (Jordan), just outed how out of touch they are instead of dunking on the youths. Everything about that joke was awful and it was the one part of the show that wasn't "so bad it's good" and instead was just plain bad unironically.
I know I’m going to get heat for this but I never really cared much for the awards show. After the train wreck of 2020 & 2022 I just really don’t pay any mind to them. The trailers usually get uploaded like 5-10 mins later online and the events are just convoluted overall.
there was a time when these were worth talking about and you could have fun and take them somewhat seriously. But a lot of that ended in the early to mid 00s when gaming was going hella mainstream and the corpos and shills really started taking over the industry. Like how can you take a gaming awards show seriously when there was a year where the pathetic journos used it as a grand stand for TLOU2? Like they have to understand that when you do that you show how little credibility you have, right?
Who in their right mind has an entire award show be voted on by the public? Fan's Choice Award is usually it's own genre, and then everything else is voted on by industry people. Otherwise, yeah no duh the most recent big thing is gonna sweep. Reminds me of when Demon Slayer won "Anime of the decade" when S1 had ended like two months prior to the voting.
yeah, but theres also the other end of the spectrum where you get The Last of Us 2 Awards show where you can literally TASTE the petty spite of the pathetic journos.
Say what you want about the Oscars, but I think they have it right to let the year actually finish and then do the awards in March. There is no reason to do it at the beginning of December. It's like Chained Echoes didn't even exist. Also I don't know how we can unironically have an "action/adventure" label in 2023. How do you even compare Alan Wake 2 to Spider-man 2?
I would like to again point to “action” in 2018 having MegaMan 11 and Call of Duty Black Ops 4000 next to each other. TGAs have always been hot garbage.
Remember how Dream won Streamer of the year 2021 when that same year he said he would donate all proceeds made during Pride Month to LGBAITQ+ charities and then he never streamed until the last day but it was after 8pm on a secondary channel no one knows about and he only streamed for two hours? I swear all the people in the streamer of the year category are AI generated. You and no one you know has ever heard of them before the awards and after the awards you never hear of them again UNLESS it comes out they're a predator. Anyway, Hollow Knight Silksong, coming exclusively to Apple Arcade in 2049.
i have no idea who any of these people are every single year so i just click on whichever guy has the nicest face. and for the esports categories i always vote for the token asian team because i figure most of the people voting on these won't and i feel bad for them (no idea who any of the teams on the list actually are, of course)
Esports IS a very stagnant category. Like, the type of player that is into that has very specific standards, and if a new game doesn't meet them, then they just simply continue to play whatever game they were already playing. Thus Counter-strike & League basically being the biggest esports (Not counting FGs) for 20 years.
The problem with fan voting is that garbage often has a much larger fandom than actual good quality entertainment. If we were looking at things from the perspective of film, then every film award would go to every piece of superhero trash that got released that year.
You get skill points to spend on abilities when you level up in Spider-Man 2, therefore Spider-Man 2 is an RPG. Or how about any game where you're clearly expected to have every skill on the tree by the end of the game can just gtfo of the RPG category? Was Jedi Survivor an RPG? I dunno, I didn't play it, but the first game sure as heck didn't feel like one. It was just an action game where you had your fun restricted until you grinded enough skill points to have a complete character.
The streamer, content creators and sports everything awards are so.. well Everytime when they say a name I literally say who. Because 95% they are so unknown or niche it seems like a waste of time while I don't know devs can give speeches that are longer then 30seconds
i could be completely wrong on this but i think among us won a award in 2020....even though it came out in 2018 it sad when i watch a award show not to see who wins but to see new game announcement and cringe i want to thank pat for making the last 2 video game award show bearable as i watch them live with him and pagie
Does anyone actually put any weight in GotY awards anymore? I remember back in 2014 Dragon Age Inquistion and Shadow of Mordor won most of the awards that year. This was the same year as Wolfenstein NO, Bayo2, Undertale, and Overwatch, so I realized that being a western developed open world game is literally the only criteria that matters to a ton of people.

How you get nominated for the Streamer Awards? Whoever sucks up the most to its host, Ludwig and missus, gets a shot. I'm partially joking, partially saying the truth. Like, if you just aren't in that Pokimane/xQc/LA streamer-kind of circle, you won't be nominated.
And if u win streamer of the year twice in a row , no one will care about how u (Kai cenat) helped cover up a rape , or qt Cinderellas best friend maya Higa , the sister of a og RUclips legend and her and mizkif tried to pressure adriannah into shutting up about her sexual assault by another streamer . Or asmongolds company otk which is being sued because of maya and mizkif
The Steamer Awards was founded by QTCinderella, Ludwig's girlfriend, in 2022. Who wins Streamer of the Year, Ludwig. "Winners were then determined using a weighted combination of the online popular vote (70%) and panelist vote (30%)." Fans of their circle will be the majority, so of course it will be in their favor.
Still surprised that people would even care for game rewards. Every year for what feels like over a Decade now it has felt like nothing more than a waste of time.
People Make Games deserve the best creator award for the insightful documentaries they make about the gaming industry, but we all know the Vtuber is going to win
I wonder if the swearing and candor has anything to do with why Pat can't get nominated....I do vividly remember him telling a fan to print a photo of a girl who stood him up and bust a nut on it. So lol. Like lmao. You know lmao.
14:45 The game awards frustrate me. I love most of the games that were nominated but Jedi Survivor should have been nominated more. Super Mario RPG got nothing.
It's okay to not like goty (And other genres) awards just because you don't like the concept of a goty. It's okay to be disappointed that that one game didn't make it in or win. It's another to be pissy about it and just hate on the awards themselves, bad presentation withstanding.

New awards show idea. The Best Best. Where every game gets an award just for being good. No specifics. Just good.
THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST
Your game has to be in a stable and playable state Day 1. The actual award isn't a trophy, but rather you just get a kiss on the head from Miyamoto and a round of applause.
I get that some people like to see garbage, but even they have to have a limit with train wrecks like this.
Game Award Shows are HERE to pick up the cringe that E3 left on the table, the hero's we didn't know we needed
i'm being completely honest when i say i have no clue where people got this idea E3 was cringe, at least not much more than any other event like it, Game Awards included.
@@ricardomiles2957E3 was a trash fire every time what the fuck are you talking about
@@ricardomiles2957it probably helps that they were collective shows. With more shows happening, cringe was just more likely to happen
Best indie and best debut indie have been separate for at least a year, they were both categories last year
@@kmann7253 that's just what *they* want you to think, man!
It boils down to:
- the TGA gives the judges the categories
- each judge submits a minimum of 3 games per category, up to a maximum of 5
- if a judge cannot come up with 3 games they may abstain from that category
- once all these are tallied and the nominees determined then they are given to the judges for final voting.

I don't get why Pat's freaking out about fan voting when developer voting
seems more geared towards dishonesty and in the past we had people literally
bring their wives or husbands and told them to vote for them.
I remember the crapshoot that was literally seeing the last of us 2 win awards that
were unjustified and in categories that made sense.
Pat literally going "This is bias, I should make a bias version of it." Is dumb as well.
if Pat had his own game of the year it also have 12 games in it. Cocoon and sea of stars
were in the running- and are majorly good! And hearing Pat go "I don't know what that is thus it's undeserved to be here"
The glass house is shattered into DUST!
Pat's profession is literally getting in glass houses and chucking stones and calling himself a genius while being a huge idiot.
Joystick Awards needs that “Quiet” golf sign. Or serve no alcohol.
Damn, i was anticipating Pat going off about Destiny 2 being nominated for "Best Community Support" despite recently going through massive layoffs.
There was a big wtf reaction from him on stream about it, but shit was going fast. Must’ve forgotten about it in all the other stuff flying by.
While Armored Core is a niche series, it feels similar to Hi-Fi Rush in the sense that it probably deserved to be nominated for more.
How are we still making Millennial jokes in 2023? In like 2-3 years, everyone who has been classified as a Millennial will be at minimum 30 years old, that group isn't young enough to make "those kids today" jokes anymore. And Zoomers are right there, coasting on not having as catchy a name.
I'm a millennial and I read all the gaming magazines at my school library in grade school
Everything about that joke was awful and it was the one part of the show that wasn't "so bad it's good" and instead was just plain bad unironically.
we still have Zoomers that are like 15 right now.
The best way to summarize it is, Freshman high schoolers doing a presentation in the auditorium
Y’all remember when the Game Awards first started, they had the winners painted on naked women?
wtf really?!
Pat is describing the best Tim and Eric skit.
@@lordxmugen True. It's almost like there's no way to do a reward show sensibly when everyone is stupid except me.
Say what you want about the Oscars, but I think they have it right to let the year actually finish and then do the awards in March. There is no reason to do it at the beginning of December. It's like Chained Echoes didn't even exist.
Also I don't know how we can unironically have an "action/adventure" label in 2023. How do you even compare Alan Wake 2 to Spider-man 2?
would it be better if they had it "ironically," or are we just saying things?
They should make "Open World" its own category.

I’d watch Pat’s game awards
Dark Baker's fury will echo on into the infinity of the internet.
_Nothing shall forestall his return..._
Don't look at me, Pat
I voted The Coffin of Andy and Leyley for goty
This all went on and I somehow MISSED IT!?!
Armored Core VI deserves Alan Wake 2's GotY spot.
It deserves a spot for sure, but not the spot for the best game made this year that wasn't a hugely popular mega-RPG. Give it Zelda's spot.
11:49 I got worried that Ironmouse was nominated for this show, for a second.
I agree that more than 10 games need the attention on these. Gravity Circuit being one example. Also TMNT got snubbed for best OST last year.
It was just an action game where you had your fun restricted until you grinded enough skill points to have a complete character.
call of duty is an rpg
I’m with Pat on Mario Wonder. It’s… Fine? I’m like 4 “worlds” in and it’s a perfectly acceptable Mario game.
God damn I completely missed this.
You should have your own awards show would be hype
The streamer, content creators and sports everything awards are so.. well Everytime when they say a name I literally say who. Because 95% they are so unknown or niche it seems like a waste of time while I don't know devs can give speeches that are longer then 30seconds
This is a Black Mesa level wreck.
Fan votes only count towards 10% for the VGA.
You are right, you should do the video game awards on the Christmas. That would be fair.
Could even do a special like the Let's Fight a Boss.
Fan voting is a popularity contest
This is why fans shouldn’t you really do need like a separate organization to like facilitate all this like they do for film
i could be completely wrong on this but i think among us won a award in 2020....even though it came out in 2018 it sad when i watch a award show not to see who wins but to see new game announcement and cringe i want to thank pat for making the last 2 video game award show bearable as i watch them live with him and pagie
Does anyone actually put any weight in GotY awards anymore? I remember back in 2014 Dragon Age Inquistion and Shadow of Mordor won most of the awards that year. This was the same year as Wolfenstein NO, Bayo2, Undertale, and Overwatch, so I realized that being a western developed open world game is literally the only criteria that matters to a ton of people.
i mean, GOTY is just popularity contest that takes noticeable degrees of quality that most wouldn't deny to exist so people don't argue too much
Undertale was sept. 2015
AND BOMB RUSH CYBERFUNK DIDN'T EVEN GET INTO BEST MUSIC WHYYYYYYYYYY
TCOAAL should have been nominated for best indie game
What does that stand for?
You know it was crazy when you don't even need to try and make a silly title for it
Imagine having Johns so Salty that you left a live show that was only going to last for another 45 minutes. Like, just wait, my guy!
Oh man people just leaving once they realized they weren’t even considered was amazing

The industry by and large has never been more incestuous and bloated, and the award shows just reflect it. (Game or movie, take your pick.)

It's okay to not like goty (And other genres) awards just because you don't like the concept of a goty. It's okay to be disappointed that that one game didn't make it in or win. It's another to be pissy about it and just hate on the awards themselves, bad presentation withstanding.
