    My thoughts about this:
    People in the comments say that in the end he woke up and realized he hadn't made anything, just like his friend said he would.
    Which I personally find a little strange, because, I can neither see mr. carefree butterfly, nor his bro, living life "wrong". They are two very different personalities, and they value different things. One gains from building up a home, and something physical to own, and the other gains experiences, which is something to own as well, it's just that the focus lies on being happy in the present moment, and then possessing memories of those moments, rather than being happy about your plans for a great future.
    So that's one thing, I would never tell the guy that he hadn't made anything yet in life, because it just isn't true.
    The only thing I see him doing wrong, is how he tells his bro that HE isn't living like he "should". Just like his friend respects mr. carefree butterfie's life style, and lets him do his thing as long as he doesn't try to ruin his own life, mr. butterfly has to accept and respect the way his friend is living a just as fulfilled life as himself.

      I'd agree! I mean, I work a job and have an apartment, but I get vacation time and have awesome adventures. I still have somewhere to return to, someplace safe with my awesome neighbors and my family a few hours away. I couldn't imagine hopping from hostel to hostel, no real plan, only a backpack holding what I own, and nobody to really enjoy things with. just working in fields or kitchens to earn a meal or the right to sleep in someone's barn. my friend traveled like that, and while he met amazing people and had some grand adventures, he really said it sucked not being able to share it with those closest with him and not having a plan or someplace to go when he was finished.

    The ideology of the carefree millennial guy is being endorsed by experts and professors, such as Jeffrey Arnett
    (see his TED Talks), as a completely appropriate and relevant new stage of development know as "Emerging Adulthood" which takes place between adolescence and young adulthood. The ramifications are scary and will dramatically shift the overall culture of America for the future generations. Fascinating stuff. This animation was really really well done.

      @YonatanTalAnimation  5 лет назад +50

      Thanks for pointing that out. I made that film after doing a lot of research on Millennials (also I am one), and generational transitions. So I'm glad the themes come across through the characters!

    • @Anomalous-Plant
      @Anomalous-Plant Год назад +2

      @@YonatanTalAnimation I will probably remove this soon, but it would mean a lot to me if you could answer Yonatan. There's something I always wanted to know about this animation. Did you intend to critique the lifestyle of the "carefree butterfly" as it would eventually result to nothing, but maybe loneliness, that there is a realization in that his experiences will eventually mean nothing. Did you think, as you studied millennials, that the sexuality of the character is a part of it, a route to more responsible free life, which is to chase experience without responsibility?
      This bothered me so much, because I'm part of such minority and I have extremely conflicting feelings of what should I do with my life. I'm afraid of growing old. Afraid I will wake up one day and realise I haven't made anything. But at the same time, I don't want to leave those that matter to me to chase something that I think could be better, when I'm not sure if it even is. I am surrounded by people who chased it and became miserable, examples of what I don't ever want to be. Is companionship enough without procreation? Or is creating offspring, "building" a home and a family the ultimate goal, a thing that gives us a satisfaction of having "made something" and a feeling of a place and purpose.
      Of course there is no one answer to all of this, but I would love to hear what you thought of as you made this.

    • @YonatanTalAnimation
      @YonatanTalAnimation  Год назад +11

      @@Anomalous-Plant Thank you for this comment. You touched on the very core of what this film is about.
      The idea was born out of my own internal struggle dealing with two voices in my head - one that prioritized living life to the fullest and not being bound to society's constructs and "the right way to do things", the second had long term goals with methodic and disciplined ways to achieve them.
      I think that the sexuality of the character is related to the main theme in that as an LGBTQ+ person, he's already learned that happiness lies in living an authentic life that may not line up with what "fits" conformist society. I think the challenge he faces (as all of us in this age) is that he knows there are endless roads to choose from, as opposed on the one road that they told us there is. That choice can be confusing when you're always afraid of making "the wrong move", but it's a blessing if you find your own way to navigate through life.
      There are "cautionary tales" on both sides. There's the dark picture of growing old and ending up alone because you haven't built a family when you were younger.
      And on the other side, countless examples of people who did everything "by the book" and are still miserable.
      I personally prefer not to act out of fear of those harsh endings, but to look inside and find what YOU would want your future self to be like.
      There's really no right answer, there's only the answer that's right for you.
      There are people who are happier with kids and people who are happier without them. There are people who need a partner next to them at all times, and people who are good with being on their own.
      Things can change along the way too but I think the most important thing is to make decisions based on what your authentic self wants and paving your way there.
      It's not easy to admit your desires to yourself. Fear tends to control us because we have all of those "what if"s in our heads, but in retrospect, choosing what's right for us pays off big time.
      Going back to the film, I struggled a lot with finding the ending and when I had to lock the story, I realized I didn't have an answer to my question and that's why it has an open ending. Ultimately the answer is that everyone can find their place on the range between those two characters. It doesn't have to be a radical choice of one way or the other.
      I really hope that this somewhat helps, and I wish you to find your own balance based on what makes you happy.
      💜

    • @Anomalous-Plant
      @Anomalous-Plant Год назад +2

      @@YonatanTalAnimation It does. It's relieving to know that you didn't know the answer either. Plenty of people will tell you that based on their experience, the path that they chose is the right one. But what worked for them might not work for another.
      It's a really good film and I can relate to it very much right now, at this point of my life.

      HulluMel The millenials just care of having fun until they can't anymore when they get old, they think getting married, having kids, a job and not exactly going everywhere is a weight, but really, ¿those things are not a goal on life anymore?, having a stable job and a family is really difficult and takes a lot of responsibility; is sad that even when they just say in your face "have as much pleasure and emotion as you can buying this stuff and going to random places", they can't answer well ¿and what about your own issues?, ¿is that the only thing to do on life?..

      Julio Santiago Yeah i think the animator is a bit biased. Theres nothing objectively wrong with either lifestyle. You can be miserable in either. What matters is that you know who and what you genuinely love and that you pursue it. But it's still wonderfully animated, has a great flow, and perfect voice acting, so i think that makes up for it.

    OK, here is my theory for how the end turned out. Some people are confused about what happened at the very end, but this is my interpretation of it. After that whole fight with his friend about being "alive" and "living it up," he then tells him that he was worried that his friend is going to one day wake up and realize that he's made nothing, and that what exactly happened. He had dinner with them, watched a movie, and had a heartwarming time at his friend's house, only to wake up on the bus to realize that out of all the things he did, he had never experienced settling down like his friend, and living a quiet and peaceful life. What a good lesson this video teaches us. Many people think that life should be all about having fun and messing around, but the best things in life are things we make and work hard for.
    (Not hating on anyone who likes to party, just sharing my own opinion on this wonderful video.)

    • @honeybeast5545
      @honeybeast5545 6 лет назад +30

      You did not see anything Your point it's absolutely great. Life is very weird. We spend most of our lives studying desperately to make ourselves into adulthood and always looking jealously at the "party animals" and "adventurers" along the way, and they seem to be really living life. And, I was one who experienced that adventure , for a while, and, I don't know if it was my antisocial personality or the fact that I spent most of my younger years in the same routine, but after every party, every trip, every adventure, I've always felt so empty and without purpose. Like my life was just to wait to the next big thing to show up but never doing nothing in between, you know? What I'm trying to say is that routine is not a prison, neither a curse, sometimes it's just a way of never stoping, by continually doing small things that build up to something that lasts more than a night, a month, or a season.

    • @Blueskyjewel
      @Blueskyjewel 6 лет назад +35

      Honey Beast Both points of view had their merit. One settled down while the other lived to party and be free. A lot of us rushed through college and university and got a job. When we realised that we didn't really make memories we can look back at that stand out vibrantly, we're already in maybe our late twenties/early thirties. It's too late, almost. We have commitments tying ourselves down by then.
      I tend to rewatch and reflect on this a lot. I'm very much the quiet person who trudges through life. I don't understand this sheer exhilaration people feel when they do something daring or exciting. At some point, life became a grind. It lost a good deal of meaning. All it became was this wash, rinse and repeat cycle. It's full, it's draining, it's tiring.
      I'm successful in my studies (college student here), I have a decent relationship with friends and family, but that's not LIVING. It's simply a mode of existence, and it kills me sometimes. And I don't know what to do about it.

      partying and doing fun things really makes no impact or accomplishment other than personally. when you and if you live long enough to grow old, how will you feel when all that fun is gone? when you can't do it anymore? will you let your memory be some way of truly being immortal or will you just be irresponsible and end up with nothing.

      Nico Schmidt Well you saw near the end how he was smiling and so comfortable with his friend and when he was on the bus going somewhere else he realized he couldn't have that. If you have a family it's not like all the fun is gone the only difference is now you have more people to share it with, rather than just your friends or those you met at a club or bar.

    I honestly don’t know how to express how much of an influence your work has on me. With both this film, aquarium and overweight you manage to convey so much emotion in so little time, in a genuinely genius way. I’m a second year animation student at Pratt( in Brooklyn) and whenever I need some extra motivation or a new spark of inspiration I rewatch your films, because I’ve honestly never seen any other artist who’s work I connect with so strongly. You’re on the list of people I dream of working with in the future right next to Rebecca Sugar and Alex Hirsch. I wish you luck in your career, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

    Geez... I love how this doesn't tell anyone that they can't go out and make mistakes and do whatever they feel like, but it also doesn't tell people that they need to stay in a library all day until one day they eventually make something for themselves, it's just telling people that whatever life they choose they should still learn to except the people around them and the lifes that they have chosen, and that they shouldn't force the life they think is good onto others

    I love this so much! I feel like this has some of the most creative artistic decisions I've seen in animation in the past few years. Lately it seems animators want to capture a realistic image with their art, which is great, but you play around with the freedoms and exaggerations the medium allows! The wonky face after a night of drinking, the shrinking of the apartments walls, and many other moments in this film really connect with the feelings of the protagonist and are a good window into his perspective. And the story was simple and poignant, you really did a lot with character in such a short time. Not to mention the style of animation, use of lighting, and voice acting are all superb! Keep doing what you're doing!

    The animation is so cool and original and the message is relateable , because those are two different life styles that are so different and both have a point but any extreme is bad , because if you live all your life working trying to make something to leave behind in the world to be remenbered or to leave to your children if the only thing you focus is too make work in leaving something in your life you will wonder if you even enjoy life at all , and the carefree guy he lived the world everything he couldn'd ask for less but then in a few years if he has nothing concrete and he just disappears for the world to forget he even existed becoming nothing but a number , at least thats how I felt watching this in life you need to find the middleground in everything and thats the hardest part , of course you have to settle down your life and if you feel its too late or too early for that just do it settle down but dont forget the world is out there and life is to be lived but also dont forget that you won't live from partys and , do you really want to be that person that everyone looks at and say they did everything but accomplish nothing ?
    that's all that came to me after watching this amazing video and congratulation on your graduation !!

    I like how the characters are shown as opposites right before they even need to speak- through their appearances. The main character's eyes and head are round to show curiosity and free-flow while his friend has a more square look to show structure with a hint of dullness. To go on an even more simple level, their clothing colors are complementary. Good character design that also fits the plot well!

Which is also the scene that The ShyGuy is referring too I think or else their comment wouldn't make sense.

For me it rappresents that we have to pick our way no matter what the oters think. The same way round, what makes us happy isn't neccessary what makes others happy and we should just accept that. I honestly can’t thank you enough for making this. For the longest time I’ve always seen more media that champions being alive and free, as opposed to the sentiment of working hard and pulling through at the cost of not being able to get out there. As the friend mentions, he worked really hard to get where he wanted to be, and Mr. Carefree Butterfly comes in and shoots the whole thing down.
    In a way, its painful to see other people having the time of their lives when you are stuck at your desk working project after project to get a passing grade for a class to gain a modest job. In a sense it devalues what Im seemingly striving for, if having a home and a family is really worth it.
    And when I watch this, it serves as a comforting reminder that everyone has a different path and whats right for one, may not be for another. To respect that our destinations have their merits, even when the journey is at its bleakest. And in those darkest hours, when one questions their fate; to be reminded that what we work towards, no matter how long it takes, will one day become a reality grants the strength to keep moving forward.
    Thank you.

      Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. I'm glad that the film gave you some strength and supported the life decision you took.
      The film makes those two lifestyles clash to emphasize the differences between them, but as you said, ultimately everyone has their own journey to make, and there's no right or wrong. Thank you again!
