When Tommy says the back of his guitar is made of maple, that's not the same family of woods most Europeans/Americans would recognise as maple. We would classify Queensland Maple as an Acacia, sonically its closer to Koa than European maple.
Donald Trump hey don’t put Australia 🇦🇺 Down ..... under 😂 .. burn !! If you lived here you’d love it and everyone wants see our weird mammals thank you !!! One even lays eggs ! Maton should do a platypus eggshell inlay with some echidna spines making the word maton on headstock !
Not s putdoen to say WLD Maple is not “ maple” but a different timber from a unique Aussie tree species. OZ has many “ different” timbers being utilised by Australian luthiers, producing beautiful looking and sounding instruments. 😊
@@pamelahay6242 I agree, another Aussie acacia - Australian Blackwood - sounds great and can come with a beautiful Koa like flame pattern. Custom Matons use some beautiful Aussie woods such as red gum for bindings and rosettes as well. Shame Matons are so pricey in the UK.
Yes, “Blackwood” is lovely. I had a old colonial beautiful drop sided rectory table made from Tasmanian Blackwood up until Feb 2021. Lost it in a catastrophic budhfire here in Western Australia, together with a 1982 Maton CW80 6 string ( QLD maple back, side, neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard; a highly regarded dreadnaught favoured by Country & Western players (CW). Lost 2,000 40 YO vynil & CD collection too. Werr not on Bushfire Alert until advised to Leave or Defend. 90 minutes warning under a blue sky with no smoke, no sirens,. Hard to believe it might actually happen. Tended as best to horses left behind then escaped as trees burst into flame on adjacent property. 56 homes in our valley over the next 2 hours. Thankfully our horses survived. The Maton did not.
Good on you Acoustic Letter for promoting and talking about a brand that you don't carry. Shows a real dedication and respect for the artform. I play a '78 Maton FG100 and it's a killer guitar!
My first guitar at age 12 in 1967 was a Maton CW80/12 -- meaning a Country and Western 12 string. Big sound! Played folky stuff and sang in bistros for pocket money. My second guitar at age 15 was a Maton Fyrebird, a solid body electric with a Bigsby tremolo arm. Pretty cool for a teenage boy to play pop and rock covers in mates' garages.
These two guitarists have knowledge, skill and grace on their offices: talking or playing his beloved guitar. Really good. Otamar de Carvalho, Brasília, DF, Brazil
A wonderful interview with Tommy Emmanuel. His character is as vibrant as his guitar playing. He makes it easy for Tony because he has so much to share.
We went to see Clapton at the Sydney Entertainment in the 1980s and guess who opened for him? It was Tommy and he blew Eric off. He was on an acoustic all alone and he was bloody amazing. He certainly hit me over the head that night.
Very sound advice from a skillful guitarist. Within the context of the guitar, Emanuel you are well respected by musicians of every genre...pop,classical, flamenco, country etc...Keep up the good work!
At 7.23 he comments about playing in australia as a young guy and having to make a big sound to get noticed. I think it's interesting that Keith Urban said exactly the same thing about his 'apprenticeship' as a young musician in Australia. Seems to be the way to go.....
Thanks for the interview, guys! I really appreciate everything that was shared in this interview. I've always known that my learning curve goes practically straight vertical, but this really confirms it. It's great hearing about Tommy's experiences and music philosophy.
Since my twenties I've been an Eric Clapton fan so every time he came to Australia I'd be in the queue to get good seats. Then in the 1980s I got some great seats right up front and Tommy Emmanuel was opening for Clapton. Well Tommy was amazing, just him and his Maton the only effect I could hear was a bit of delay. He did the percussion thing on the top of his guitar and he was brilliant. Clapton was overshadowed by Tommy's playing as he will always be.
The Queensland Maple Tommy mentioned is Flindersia brayleyana (there is only one tree by this name, the universal scientific name) and is a rainforest tree here in Australia where we have used many European common plant names to describe our flora...which, while understandable, has lead to endless confusion. www.daf.qld.gov.au/business-priorities/forestry/using-wood-and-its-benefits/wood-properties-of-timber-trees/queensland-maple keys.trin.org.au/key-server/data/0e0f0504-0103-430d-8004-060d07080d04/media/Html/taxon/Flindersia_brayleyana.htm Tommy Emmanuel's self-belief, passion, barely sub-manic energy levels, dedication and sense of responsibility are showing us all what can be possible.
Tony, thank you.... Not only for your beard but for doing these videos. You need to get John Standefer and Moon Mullins on your show. Tommy is so humble
Very Chet Atkins style of player on the acoustic. Roy Clark was another acoustic player who was a very aggressive strummer. And of course Glenn Campbell is another great acoustic player.
Dynamics? Whisper to Roar and think like a band... Make big sound and mean it to get a Big crowd.Be. consistent. Give 100% and give the people a good time ...hit them over the head to get their attention.
I wonder how many Matons he’s had. It seems like he goes through guitars faster than I go though strings. I get it - he’s tough on guitars but makes me wonder if Maton is built to last. For the price they want for them they better last, but seems like a gamble.
Don't understand this dedication to Manton guitars.I played 1 at guitar center, it was heartless.Love to see tommy with a Ryan or Greenfield.Hes such a great loyal guy and a guitar players guy.
Tommy's guitar sounds good with him just goofing around, but if I picked it up, it would probably sound like crap. He has very good technique and clean playing, so no matter how player friendly the guitar is...it won't sound like what he's doing.
Actually a Maton will make you sound good regardless. They are even across thd strings and ring clear and clean. And QLD Maple isn’t actually a maple; it’s a rainforest tree.
The living grandmaster of the art of guitar music.
Much love and respect, Tommy!!! Greetings from Bhutan. Cheers 👍👍👍
Tommy is a huge talent and such a humble guy. He's always willing to share his knowledge and himself. Live, he's a monster.
Well said!
He's just a beautiful person.
When Tommy says the back of his guitar is made of maple, that's not the same family of woods most Europeans/Americans would recognise as maple. We would classify Queensland Maple as an Acacia, sonically its closer to Koa than European maple.
Thank you! I was wondering about Queensland Maple, and how it might be different.

Tony, this is still one of my favorite interviews you have ever done.
Good on you Acoustic Letter for promoting and talking about a brand that you don't carry. Shows a real dedication and respect for the artform. I play a '78 Maton FG100 and it's a killer guitar!
What a player and a person. One of my guitar heroes :)
It's been said by many...a true gentle soul.and a genius.. no more to say

Wow, what an honor it must've been to play with Tommy Emmanuel :)

😁😎🥰
His guitar sounds amazing!
Love Tommy Emmanuel. He's strickly unbelievable.
I love this channel. It is easily my favorite of all.
Saw Tommy live a couple years ago, he mesmerized every person in there for nearly 2 hours with just him and a guitar.
Absolutely love Tommy. Please correct the description as the guitars he plays are "Maton", not "Matin".
Tommy can make any guitar sound great ... the sound is in his hands 🖐🏻
and heart
Great video, Tony.
Hearing what Tommy says, it's easy to understand why he is the best.
I'm waiting for the second part!
Very sound advice from a skillful guitarist. Within the context of the guitar, Emanuel you are well respected by musicians of every genre...pop,classical, flamenco, country etc...Keep up the good work!
skillful?? what is wrong with you
@@amazingme1408 Is he not?
waited very long for this one, awesome!
What an excellent interview!! Great question being asked, by someone who understands music. Keep going with these
I love that these principles are applicable any level/genre of performer. The man's a genius in every sense of the word.
Love Tommy's enthusiasm and joie de vivre. Top man. Tony's not so bad either! :) xx

could you guys do one of these with john mayer I love these videos !
I would actually love to see that. John is an incredible player and has great taste in his acoustics. He can be a bit of a salty cock though.
Tommy E is such a great person and completely awe inspiring
I'm so sold. Thank you.
Hey guys, part two will be released Friday Sept 6th!
Great interview! I'm looking forward to the next. This guy has class. You're pretty sharp too, Tony :D
Thanks for the interview, guys! I really appreciate everything that was shared in this interview. I've always known that my learning curve goes practically straight vertical, but this really confirms it. It's great hearing about Tommy's experiences and music philosophy.
I love this guy's performing attitude. "Hit them over the head!"
+Bill Kirkeby Yeah it's so funny but true.

Words of wisdom, in the end 🙌
One of the nicest sounding Guitars, I had a try of, was a model by Maton called the “Bronzed Aussie”.
Beautiful tone 👍

Such a talent

Got my tickets to see Tommy at Salisbury in the UK in January. Can't come soon enough :-)
Legend
No one on the planet 🌏 like Tommy Emmanuel.
saw him last night....awesome
Tommy E is a guitar legend. Guitars loved him...
Great episode!
Tommy you are my hero !
Awesome for sharing.
Tommy started out as a drummer, so he gets on stage dynamics.
great interview man!
That little diddy at 5:25 is amazing beautiful. Was that off the cuff or a previously recorded song?
He is a living legend
Maple has way more mids than a rosewood back and sides, that's why tommy loves it, cuts through better
I’d love to hear a Martin OM28 with Maton or Cole Clark electronics.
Very Chet Atkins style of player on the acoustic. Roy Clark was another acoustic player who was a very aggressive strummer. And of course Glenn Campbell is another great acoustic player.
Yes, he hung out with Chet who was his guitar hero long before Tommy achieved recognition outside of the Aussie acoustic music scene.
I thank Alex Lifeson for introducing me to this great guitarist. Acoustic guitar is the soul of electric guitar
Best thing ever
You could hit that guitar with a wooden spoon and it's still gonna sound ten times better than mine 😔
A. Cat it’s in he hands... a good guitarist can make a 50 dollar guitar sound good
08:05 priceless lesson
Heard Tommy open for Clapton at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Tommy blew Eric away poor Eric.
Fucking great interview! Well Done, love this channel
5:30 and Tony's reaction, face... hahah
TOMMY E they dont get better !
Dynamics? Whisper to Roar and think like a band... Make big sound and mean it to get a Big crowd.Be. consistent. Give 100% and give the people a good time ...hit them over the head to get their attention.
When Ashton Kutcher pranks Tommy with his fake beard!
7:15 if you want a big crowd make a big sound.
I'd freeze a frame around 0:21 of me and Tommy laughing our asses off, guitars in hand, frame it and tell legends about that time.
Part to is "Private" hence unavailable. Doh!
What song is he playing starting at 5:15? Thanks!
Wheres part two Tony ?
Tommy plays the lacquer off a guitar in the first 8 minutes.
Tony looks amazingly like Ashton Kutcher lol
I wonder how many Matons he’s had. It seems like he goes through guitars faster than I go though strings. I get it - he’s tough on guitars but makes me wonder if Maton is built to last. For the price they want for them they better last, but seems like a gamble.
They last….
Massive hands
