  • The fifth of my Hidden Gems series will reveal the hidden Alexandra Swamp.
The Alexandra Swamp is not an official name of the area, but long before any development occured in that area, it was a huge swampland.
The land was previously used for an army barracks, a rifle range, an oil storage depot and when it was finally abandoned, reverted back into a swamp fed by the Sungei (River) Alexandra, which was canalised today as the Alexandra Canal. The swamp was a major tributary to Sungei Alexandra and continues today as a feeder to the Alexandra Canal.
The grounds left behind after the removal of the oil storage depot in the mid 1970s is a now nature refuge that few has ever wandered into.
Modern development is now right at its doorstep and this hidden pond will soon be a thing only some will remember.
