महावीर स्वामी का जन्म वैशाली (बिहार) के निकट कुण्डग्राम में एक क्षत्रिय परिवार में हुआ था। इनके बचपन का नाम वर्धमान था। पिता सिद्धार्थ, कुण्डग्राम के राजा थे, एवं माता त्रिशला का संबन्ध भी राजघराने से था। राजपरिवार में जन्म होने के कारण महावीर स्वामी का प्रारम्भिक जीवन सुख-सुविधाओं से परिपूर्ण बीता।
पिता की मृत्यु के पश्चात 30 वर्ष की आयु में इन्होने सन्यास ग्रहण कर लिया और कठोर तप में लीन हो गये। ऋजुपालिका नदी के तट पर सालवृक्ष के नीचे उन्हे ‘कैवल्य’ ज्ञान अर्थात सर्वोच्च ज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई, जिसके कारण उन्हे ‘केवलिन’ कहा गया। इन्द्रियों को वश में करने के कारण ‘जिन’ कहलाये एवं पराक्रम के कारण ‘महावीर’ के नाम से विख्यात हुए।
