    This is one of the most educating videos anyone can watch. Thank you. I went through a serious midlife crisis in 2021 and experienced depression, insomnia, and high blood pressure for nearly 7 months. Meditation, physical exercises, and Stoic practices helped me to recover. Today, I am more mindful, resilient, and overall happy.

    I am a healthcare worker on my day off and I spent many hours listening and checking on all the references that these amazing people shared here.     Mindfulness, when properly understood and applied is one of the most effective practices available for overcoming anxiety, depression and other forms of emotional suffering. It is great to see these ancient teachings being revived and developed for modern use.

      I do it naturally as soon as i wake up. I wish I could use this to gain employment in psychology/ counseling fields. I know it inside out.

    honestly this is the truest thing ever! Using mindfulness i overcame my anxiety and ocd! if everyone was mindful, the world would be incredible .

    my heart expands imagining mindfullness becoming a common human practice. for those who are curious, mindfullness is not an abstract concept, a Philosophy or a belief system. it is a state of being that you can tap into that will transform your entire life in ways you cannot imagine. i encourage you to practice mindfullness, and once you experience mindfullness for yourself you will then see the deeper truth behind what these people are attempting to describe.

    I love this interview...So true..been meditating even for 3 weeks for 15 mins each day and so far been feeling and seeing lots of changes.
    I've done this meditation previously before through some very difficult periods of my life, eg death of my father and brother in a short time, and it had helped me tremendously in dealing with the grief.
    Thoroughly recommended to everyone. :)

    If you just think intentionally instead of letting the mind ramble this should easy to tackle.
    I used to have too many thoughts before falling to sleep, so I focused in on a two syllable word, and thought the word over and over again.
    This simple process ended the problem.
    I took control of my thoughts with this act of intentional thinking and anyone can do it.
    When we are not intentionally in control of our thoughts they naturally ramble this is why the problem is worse at night.
    It sounds like you people on the discussion panel yourselves are having this problem. I really recommend thinking intentionally and cutting down on caffeine and sugar to resolve the problem.
    Caffeine and sugar both cause hyper mental alertness.
    Being in the moment is very easy if you watch what you eat and use intentional thinking.

    If you go into it deep enough, it'll cure you permanently. A practical step might be to get yourself a "skin conductance" device to measure activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is correlated to tension, stress, arousal, anxiety. That way you'll have a feedback system that'll inform you when youre moving deeper into med, or away from it.

    Age matters to some degree. But any person, at any age, can benefit enormously from regular practice of mindfulness. The more you are in a state of mindfulness the greater the change to the brain. I believe mindfulness would be able to greatly help someone overcome addiction but I do not know to what degree. It would be interesting to see the results of studies on this.

    Mindfulness: as simple as breath, as deep as soul. To think about what that actually describes, then practice the meaning of it in meditation, is all that is needed to gain benefits of mindfulness.

    Awareness is weather you know of something or not. Perception is how you view/see things or not. Both is educational. Of cource their is a mind body connection. All the organs make up the human body. Ho you see life is based on how you were raised and treated in your formative years as well as elementary years. It sets the stage.

    Now you are talking about it,this has been practising 2500 years ago in India and China and even before Buddha "s time.To transform our minds we need to take up meditation and continue to watch our minds 24 hours aday 365 days ayear.. The problem is we as human beings are always searching for something .Being alert and knowing what is going on in your mind is the first step towards the correct direction.

    It sounds a lot like "ego death" to me. Why I say this is because having experienced ego death, the way John describes mindfulness sounds almost the same in effect.

    In terms of stress and how to avoid giving too much value to certain events, circumstances, or situations you need to have a good amount of knowledge pertaining to what you are experiencing. Stress mainly comes from not knowing what the outcome of things will be and from over-burdening yourself with responsibilities. Some things don't require your control over them if you already have the knowledge of what will take place. Being mindful can help you assess things more clearly without fear.

    I was a few years ago after my divorce a white up tight out'ta sight over achiever male so full of stress my MRI was screaming all beta waves, one day away from some kind of stress related death
    I started using bi aural beats w/headphones to meditate, now I believe I will live to see grand children. I haven't had another MRI but I can feel my brain has calmed

    One of the most common MINDSETS, in health care is that health care separates the mind from the body. There is no bigger misgiving than this mindset. Ellen Langer has written and studied this for close to 50 years now and it amazes me that medicine has and still misses this proven reality in the administration of the healing arts and the presentation of the Central Dogma.

    Mindfullness is an active process of training the mind, and is not "spacing out", or "doing nothing". In fact, mindfullness is the very opposite of "spacing out" or "doing nothing". It is an exercise in concentration.

    Buddhism have actually been around for several millennium, pre-dating way before Christianity. However as the speaker have said, mindfulness-training is not necessarily 'Buddhism', just like how the person known as Buddha isn't a Buddhist to began with, but is more akin to a philosopher of the mind, seeking to understand about the nature of suffering, and pioneering one of the ways as now practiced in Buddhism + meshed up with other cultural ritualistic influences such as Hinduism at the time.

    Meditation can be separated into concentration and mindfulness. Before load Buddha's time, there had not been such a thing called mindfulness meditation. There, of course, were loads of concentration practitioners. When the Buddha got enlightened, that is the time of mindfulness meditation which he taught us 4 ways to achieve that by sensing your body, feelings, mind, and mental qualities. See the sutta called Maha-satipatthana Sutta.

    I try to put our cultural awareness of an issue in mind by some of the phrases we use. At 39:00 I the phrase comes to mind, "It's not all about you." That may be off track from one perspective and groking the idea from another.

    The brain is interpreting external stimuli and formulating (sometimes random and very repetitive) thoughts. "You", the conscious awareness or perceiver of those thoughts, is actually the one making decisions on which of these thoughts to act upon and how to do so. You are not the brain, there's a separation here that your not seeing. Try Vipassana meditation or transcendental meditation and something might just "click" and you'll realize yourself. Let your heart guide you "there".

    Stephanie, put it this way: Mindfulness is an introspective activity. You will not achieve its benefits by contemplating the neuroscience. In which case, what is the best way to express the causality to those interested in obtaining the benefits?

    This is an awesome discussion! Here in Augusta, Ga, we have a scientist making amazing strides with meditation research. He is on staff at Georgia Regents University (GRU). Check out his meditation research. He has actually done some work with active duty and veterans.

    I've been looking for someone who addresses the problem I'm having when around people who outwardly express their negative views or opinions regarding meditation, mindfulness. I've invited them to try it once with me, but they won't, and overall they have a negative opinion of life, the world, mankind. Unfortunately, one of those people is my mom, so I can't decrease the time I spend with her like I would probably with someone who wasn't my mom.

    Mindfulness is a practice of focus that does not require meditation and the advancement of human cognitive awareness is not dependent on explanations about brain plasticity or mystical dragon chasing. It can be accomplished by anyone who has the courage to face themselves. I came across a series of books that move beyond scientific and mystical speculations about cognitive advancement called The Evolution of Consciousness series by Endall Beall. The second book in the series, Willful Evolution explains in terms any layman can understand what cognitive advancement (enlightenment) really means. I found these books on Amazon and they changed my life.

      +martouk53 Mate... your either trying to sell those books or you don't actually understand what enlightenment is. You cannot be taught enlightenment, someone must find it themselves. Read the actual book about Siddartha. And finding enlightenment of course has nothing to do with chasing mystical dragons... why would you even mention that? AND, enlightenment requires mastery of meditation, with a dualistic mindset. AND yeah, enlightenment DOES need cognitive awareness. You cannot become enlightened if your not cognitively aware of yourself... so why are you saying this? Your comment is very misleading to many people. I could be wrong, you could be right. But I don't think your comment is what you mean't to say. Just keep in mind, mindfulness is NOT enlightenment. Meditation IS needed for being mindful and enlightened, AND, you dont need courage to face yourself. There is no lie, no illusion as of who you are. You are yourself. There isn't a hidden message. Once you understand this, you are already very far into being mindful. Again, read Siddartha, the actual person to achieve enlightenment himself, to understand what I mean.

    I believe in free will. It depends how you define consciousness.
    In theory I could come up with a mathematical model of your brain to predict what your next reply will be.
    But that doesn't mean you have no free will. What if your consciousness *is* the mathematical model I use to make the prediction? In that case, the only reason I can make the prediction is because I'm effectively asking "you" (albeit another manifestation of "you") what your reply will be.

    I heard that: When we think some process is carried out inside the brain. I am not asking the whole story of the brain working or its natures and how it's divided. The question is after the brain initiated some thinking does that thinking still duel inside the brain as part of the brain? what is their difference?

    Buddhism provides them a way to speak about scientific topics with a religious or holistic approach without incurring cognitive dissonance. It's unfortunate that we as Christians couldn't achieve mainstream approval with the same approach, at the moment, but Science and Religion in our society are opposed systems of dogma and not complementary ways of learning about yourself and your world, dontcha know.

    28:18 they are talking about signal locking with a strong coherent gamma wave in the brains of expert level meditators and insights or realizations in the present moment. I want to say that my mind has this uncanny ability to immediately identify what a circumstance is with so very subtle an input that it frightens me sometimes. I'll know without knowing. It's so close to prediction that in many normal situations it IS prediction. moving on...

    Consciousness is the very opposite of mindfulness. Being mindful is a bad idea, it anchors the mind to the thoughts.

    it is more than meditation. It is experiences in interpersonal relationships. How you are treated, nurtured and educated. The world is too big with too many differences for people to work from the same premise .Kids are neglected at home and told to sit down and shut up at school. You are talked at and not talked to. Ever where herded like cattle instead of a human being.
    Kids should have an evaluation for communication skills and social skills upon entering school as well as self care instruction. These personal development skills should be taught in school just like other subjects.
    Everything is about punishment and fear rather than, love, nurturing, nurturing affection and empowerment. There is not enough choice for kids to find their interest and talents, their self, if they had transpiration and the money to participate in a pay to play society.
    Schools should do fund raisers to pay for kids who sorry parents do not involve their self in their kids life. Classes should be offered to parents as well in the evenings and week ends.
    Also buses need monitors so the driver can drive and someone to watch, guide and mediate the children. Teachers should be in the bathroom monitoring the kids too. Teaching this stuff to broken adults is a bit late but better late than never.
    You got it Anger and Aggression in this broken society structure with broken family values in a non stop 24/7 world instead of sun up and sun down. No one has the time as everyone works a different shift to be together. No one can afford the society we live in. Everyone is in debt including the entire counties government. Capitalism has gone crazy.
    You have plastic surgery instead of health. 80 year olds pulled stuffed and died to look 40 while they claim it is natural. As natural as Kim k but and boobs from fat transfer and implants. Age and death is hidden and no one knows how to deal with it. Go to a smart ass councilor and they say just don't die. Go and say I am scared and they say what are you going to do about it. Like mother Fer if I knew I would not be paying insurance and co payments to pay your sorry butt.
    You have the under-educated taking care of and abusing elderly as well as people who are abusive and do not care. These are the problems Fix these societal issues.

    Thats what they are trying my friend.Mindfulness before going to war. To learn to be in the moment and focusing on the mission.Then working on our response to what we see and do.Mindfulness should be used for all.Im sorry you feel sickened by giving a gift to a very huge part of what makes up our society.It is sad the mistakes we have made but remember, we follow orders.     except reflex actions all other actions in any ordinary untrained person is mind controlled although you may be unaware according to Buddha.The simple principle is that when your mind is trained in good direction ,automatically all your actions become good even without any effort

    if mindfulness practices can benefit prison inmates' morality and other goo aspects, and since these effect can literally be measured by brain scans! why there is no such a rule in prison that gives imprisoned individuals a chance of mitigate their sentence based on the percentage they accomplish in these practices!?

      because judgments are not connected to rehabilitation. Also nuro-plasticity is affected by environment there is no evidence to say that a person will not fall back into old habits when released.

    I wonder if there has been any discussion around the notion that the brain is contained within a mind, rather than a mind within the brain?
    It is my assertion that the way to understand the entirety of the body, is to notice it is a being that "created" the body.
    The nature of that being is the soul, but then there is another mind connected to the collective unconscious or rather the Great consciousness. In the great mind is the making of the lesser minds, each individuated versions of the Great. This is what I call Spirit.
    The spirit that is in all living things is accessed via mindfulness.
    Is anyone aware of another study that would consider this? That the body is contained within a layer of bodies; unseen bodies?
    I would suspect these etherial bodies detectible in some manner. Although they would have alternate, dimensional aspects, something of this dimension must be detectible, if it did indeed make matter organize into self-organizing constructs.

      +Sondra Sneed (Godscribe) Mindfulness is not a "spirtual" thing. It is a way of life that changes your actual physical brain resulting in different wave lenghts and patterns. You can't compare a etheral spirit with mindfulness... because I don't know what your saying if thats the case.
      If your saying what I think your saying, (that your world, or your body, is just in a another mind, or that you, are in some spiritual etheral mystical thing like god, or some creator of your own body) then no. Absolutely not, your spirit isn't in some "other world", and it isn't "magical". It is your OWN well being and your OWN body and your OWN mind. Your spirit is your mind, which is in your brain. Without the brain you can't have a mind. And you can't have a mind that created a body, that sounds exactly like a god creating mankind. Which could be true, but I don't think so.
      If thats kind of confusing, then all I am saying is that you cannot have a mind in a brain. Everything you see, hear, feel, is YOUR brain and mind. Your mind comes from the brain. If the brain was contained in the mind... I don't know. It doesn't make sense. Again, mind is what you experience from the external world outside your body. Your mind comes from the brain. Even though that analogy goes against Zen...

      +Sondra Sneed (Godscribe) philosophically, and it aplies to the mind- "the all is in all, and all is in the all". understanding that if we are the being, the experiencer of our lives, and that we all share that same indefinable quality... observer sense of being... allows us to BETTER mindfully control our own emotions and desires while being aware of our thoughts so that we can all truely live by the golden rule "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" without egotistical, narcissistic, base animal desires or thoughts clouding individual judgment on what is right or wrong in any given situation... based on sound principals. I understand your sentiment... metaphorically because I understand the principals and can relate to what you are trying to say... though there is not really literal layers to the body or hidden dimensions (in that sense of ethereal worlds surrounding our own universe). Study neurology and psychology, atomic/nuclear physics and quantum physics then look into ancient hermetic philosophy- (its all about will and intent comined with an understanding of the mind and the nature of reality)... then you might be able to ponder these things with a more grounded sense of possibilities based on science and your subjective sense of reality.

      +larisagnia Mindfulness goes way way back to ancient ways of Buddhism, Hinduism, which can be traced as far back as 30,000 years ago, and even certain sects of Christianity. Science of Mind is a spiritual paradigm practiced by Christian Scientists (not to be confused with Scientology), as asserted by the works of Mary Baker Eddy in 1875. While it may not be for you, that mindfulness is spiritual training, there are many who use it for exactly that purpose.

    Fascinating discussion but I disagree with Richard Davidson. What evidence is there that this is the product of top-down volitional control? Given other studies about the neuroscience of free will, it's much more likely that your brain unconsciously chooses to engage in meditation after some exposure to the practice, after which you experience the choice popping into your head, leading to changes in the brain which yield the enhanced well-being that mindfulness provides.

    There is pure pain that can't be managed by this method. CRPS Type 2 patients like me who are made to feel we aren't doing this properly, are those who suffer on the upper scale of the McGill University Pain scale.
    Not everyone who suffers pain can even sit, to busy squirming and screaming during a three day pain spike, to have a thought towards emptying the mind. Pain spikes that last days, in spite of the morphine. This method should be selectively given. CRPS Type 2 should be avoided.
