    This was a FANTASTIC primer!
    Don’t want to tell you how to do your job, but I think revisiting this after week 3 or 4 (and perhaps at year’s end) to compare and contrast Fuller’s implementation/deviations from these concepts AND our roster’s ability/inability to to run whatever Fuller chooses to call, would give us a really good metric for informed opinions about the D’s growth over the season.

    • @XsandNoles
      @XsandNoles  3 года назад +3

      That's a great idea! Yeah the hope is that I can use these concepts in the future and build on them when talking about Fuller (a topic I expect should come up frequently nest year). To me it all come down to whether he has the cats to play the aggressive man he wants. Hopefully some of these transfers are the answer but if not he may have to switch things up to try to save his job.

      My bigger worry is that he’ll be gun-shy from the outset and instead of dying by the sword that he’s most comfortable with (and most likely to succeed with), he dies by a thousand cuts and never gives himself a chance. There will almost assuredly be calls for Fuller’s firing, the question will be whether they’re warranted. I think illustrating which path Fuller chooses, alongside player performance, will give the fan base a more honest perspective on the balance of blame between coaching and talent.

    • @XsandNoles
      @XsandNoles  3 года назад +2

      Yeah definitely. And even then there will always be calls I don't agree with. The research process opened my eyes to a lot of things as well. I look forward to being able to watch Fuller with new insights that I can hopefully pass on

      Since I’ve got you, have you ever thought about doing weekly preview videos on the weaknesses that our staff might look to exploit for each opponent? Kind of like scouting for the fan base... I’ve watched your previews but I didn’t recall them being as focused on what our staff is looking for (say pre-snap or trends) but more focused on what the opponent brings to the table in terms of strengths. Just curious.

    • @XsandNoles
      @XsandNoles  3 года назад +1

      So yeah I did focus on strengths of opponents last year. I would generally talk about 1 or two places to exploit but I was also trying to make the videos digestible for any opposing fans that might come through. Next year my thought was that if we played last year I would break down each sides approach to each other and how it worked/didn't work and what they might do different this time. Idk if that's what you were asking for but I do appreciate the ideas

You break down these coverages really well, and the best thing that i like that people tend not to do but you do is showing how the defensive scheme looks in action compared to just showing a picture. Awesome video as always! I'm loving these coverage videos you're doing. Learning so much! Thanks for your work.
    Regarding the last coverage in the video. The camera angles make it tough to tell what it is. It looks like cover two, but after watching this video I'm going to say it's Stress coverage. It looks like M and the FS might be bracketing the #3 receiver. Then you also see the S gets his hands on the #2 receiver at the very edge of the screen. These are two things you mentioned to watch out for in Stress coverage... Educate me up if I'm wrong. Thanks!

      Really good guess! Love the reasoning here. Another commenter had a very similar response so I'm just going to copy what I put there. BTW your answer is about as close as I could have expected. The real answer isn't something I directly covered...
      Spoiler ahead for anyone that doesnt want to see the answer.
      This is one I had trouble with myself which is why I thought it would be a good challenge. You're right that it looks like cover 2. The thing is that you have to look at the eyes immediately post-snap. They do look at receivers not in front of them so it is a type of man match. So good job on that intuition as well.
      I believe this is Clip. Which is a man match cover 2. Easy way to remember it is if the name starts with S (as in stress or stubbie) then the flats player is the Stud/Sam- making it a type of man match cover 4. If the name of the play starts with C (Clip) then the flats player is the Corner- similar to cover 2. But good job! I didn't expect someone to get this close on a first try!

      @@XsandNoles they get a pass for last season. If the defense suffers due to pure lack of physical ability I’d give the coaches a pass again. Hopefully you guys will point out when the defense is just whipped regardless of good calls/coaching vs bad play calls or players not playing like they were coached up.

    The last coverage is kind of tough because the camera leaves the near safety so soon it is hard to tell what he does. Pre-snap it definitely looked like zone to me. defenders were playing back and appeared to be looking at the QB. Back side safety wasn't playing solo, turned his hip to the outside, so at least for that side it was probably cover 2. The near side, after watching it several times, I think I am going to say it is stress. I would have said it was cover 2 if you had asked me before seeing this video, but you do get the briefest glimpse of the near safety and it appears he is targeting the inside slot man. But man that is a real tough one, mostly due to the camera work, If I had another couple of seconds to see that safety it would have been easier. Thanks for the video.

      Yeah to be honest I thought it was stubbie for a while. The corner is tough to tell.

    I wonder how much of memphis' defensive schemed will be carried over to FSU considering norvell is mostly an offensive guy (hes a pretty good WR coach from the stuff ive seen from him) or if they will run what UCF did since the new FSU defensive coordinator is from their, so that might be another team to look at to get an idea of what they could run.

    • @XsandNoles
      @XsandNoles  3 года назад

      So Fuller is still the DC. They did bring in Randy Shannon from UCf but I don't think that he'll have a lot of input into how the defense runs. At least for now. I could always be wrong!

    • @XsandNoles
      @XsandNoles  3 года назад

      Yeah the Fox is an interesting position. Kind of makes it like a 4-3 3-4 hybrid. I haven't seen enough good of it to really be sold on the idea but I feel like I have to wait until Fuller has a true fox in there to decide

    • @CoachAB75
      @CoachAB75 3 года назад

      The Fox role will/can change season to season hence its hybrid nature. It will be dependent upon who is available and what teams are doing. It just presents you the opportunity to be flexible.

  • @MartyV_
    @MartyV_ 3 года назад

    Was the scheme too complicated for our guys in 2020? I feel like our corners aren't skilled enough to cover man as often as Fuller likes to run it, & our Safeties aren't processing fast enough to avoid giving up the big plays. And Gainer's strength isn't coverage. We had tons of breakdowns at every level - DL couldn't generate a pass rush, LB's took bad angles & seemed to avoid filling any run gaps, Secondary struggled at Nickel & Boundary corners, but was it a case of too much with little time to digest it, or a case of not ridiculously skilled guys on the field, or both? Pretty crazy that Asante did such a great job covering half the field and yet offenses picked the other 10 guys apart every game. Great video, very interesting and humbling watching it.
