    many great benefits come to mind regarding mirrorless cameras besides the smaller size, compared to DSLR's:
    - seeing the white balance and exposure of the image in real time in the viewfinder
    - being able to review images in the viewfinder (think of bright sunlight)
    - being able to adapt virtually any lens with the help of a non-optical (and potentially cheap) adapter (image quality is not altered)
    - if there is in-body image stabilization, the possibility of using any lens stabilized
    - being able to focus manually with help of focus peaking and magnified view in the viewfinder (not just the rear screen)
    - you can actually see something in the viewfinder in low light thanks to the electronic image
    - being able to shoot in completely silent mode (if the camera has that function - the most recent ones do)
    - possible front or back focusing issue is eliminated since the preview, the focusing and the exposure all happen on the same plane (DSLR's do them in 3 different places). This is probably the main reason I switched to mirrorless 6 years ago...

    This is my 3rd year as a member of Karl Taylor Education. I study all things photography on the internet and get good information from many sources. Thankfully Karl is not a gear head or pixel peeper. He's more old-fashioned and his approach pragmatic. You'll get good gear info on his Education site but not like you can get on youtube. But when it comes to just about every other aspect of photography, and lighting is 75% of it, Karl's information is exhaustive and just so enjoyable to watch. He doesn't attempt to cover all the genre possibilities himself but often brings in experts in their specific photography fields to help teach. If you go from youtube to Karl Taylor Education you'll probably notice you are experiencing the true art of photography, maybe for the first time, regardless of how long you've been taking pictures. He takes the technical aspects to the next level, which in itself is worth it, but more importantly your creative and artistic side will be challenged, like watching a good movie that moves you. It is really great and I highly recommend checking it out.

    This is why I have a few different systems, compact, apsc, full frame and medium format all have their strong and weak points but all depends on what you're shooting and where they will be going in the end. Great video Karl! I like the bit at the end about giving a newbie a medium format camera and a pro a entry level camera as I done this a proved a lot of people wrong.

    @Karl Taylor, there are definitely more advantages to using a mirrorless camera than just size. A few examples include: eye auto focus, animal eye auto focus, exposure preview, high frame rates, and more focus point coverage on the sensor. Of course DSLRs could have these features in live view mode, but most do not.
    I feel that it is a disservice to your audience to say there is not much difference between mirrorless and DSLR cameras other than size. It’s kind of like saying, the only advantage of DSLRs is better battery life. There are more tangible differences that can benefit photographers.

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  4 года назад +4

      In the video I wasn't really referring to features I was referring to output quality. Their is a misconception that one or the other delivers better image quality which is not the case. Personally though I don't have an opinion on which one people should go for, all cameras are just tools to me, and I think that people should just use the one that allows to me do my job the best, which is why at the start of the video I stressed that the first thing people should think about is 'purpose'. After that the most important feature of the camera is the photographer attached to it and his or her level of passion and knowledge.

    • @justusc79
      @justusc79 4 года назад +2

      Karl Taylor I agree with your points here. Cameras are tools and nearly all cameras are capable tools. And as you say, it is important to pick the right tool for you and what you shoot.
      That is why I feel that your comparison between mirrorless and DSLRs was a disservice to your audience. The way you worded your comparison of the two is to say that there is no benefit to either, other than size or battery life. There are certainly many benefits to both types of cameras that are important to include in a buying guide, but you did not address them. Image quality is not the only, or even the most important, feature as each camera is going to be suitable for different purposes.

I have been watching your presentations for over a decade and have gathered so much from your simple and no nonsense approach.

    There is one thing that anyone interested in picking up a new camera should do, and that is to avoid Amazon reviews. Or at least take them with a huge grain of salt. In so many cases they are not only unhelpful, but can even be misleading. Some reviews were written for pay (and therefore often give glowing reviews that are unwarranted) or were typed up by a frustrated user who for some reason regrets his purchase and is keen to let the world know that „this camera is rubbish“. At best, they provide good entertainment, at least in my opinion.
    What I can also highly recommend is to go to an actual brick and mortar store and get „hands on“ with as many cameras as possible to get a feel for what you like best in terms of controls. At the end this is what it comes down to for me. I for one like Nikon‘s interface best because it feels natural to me but at this point I can do work with almost any camera. Your mileage will definitely vary and you should not take my word for it. Always try stuff out physically (and support your local camera store 😊).

    Maybe there is one point that was not mentioned so long, if you are about to invest into a new camera system, and that is the question: how futureproof is my investment? The most expensive and therefore most valuable pieces are the lenses. What we change over the years are the bodys. So in the year 2020 I only would invest in a mirrorless system, wether it is from Sony, Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Fuji, Oympus, you name it. I have no doubt that there is no huge difference in quality between DSLRs and mirrorless systems if you compare the same sensor sizes and price ranges. But I am quite sure that now camera technology is changing towards mirrorless and that DSLR technology would not be a future proof investment any more. The new Nikon and Canon DSLRs bodys that were released recently are aimed to existing users that are heavily invested in DSLR designed lenses. Recently Canon anounced that for the moment they will stop the development of DSLR lenses and that they put their focus and effort to the development of the mirrorless system. So in my opinion for new investers the investment in a mirrorless system is the to be more likely future proof option. I started in 2016 to invest in a new system and had to decide between a fullframe Canon, Nikon and Sony System. Because of the eye-AF for my mainly portraiture work my decision fell onto the Sony System. I now own also 6 GM and Zeiss Batis lenses. I do not regret my decision. I am happy with image the quality of my A7rII/III bodys. And I now am happy to have invested in a system that will be developped further. If I would have opted for Nikon or Canon and would have bought 6 expensive lenses, I guess would be happy with the image quality, but maybe not so happy to see that momentarily all is going into the mirrorless direction.

    Depending on the craft, handmade craft can be very difficult to photograph. (you could also be not a budding photographer but a budding craft artist) When I was still in school and regularly did ceramics I found out the best way to photograph my own work was using diffused window light with white cardboards as reflectors. I was able to control reflections and get good results. A friend got a photo major friend to photograph their work and the photo major chose to block off all natural light and use studio lighting but struggled to get good shots.

    I save lots of storage space on my pictures by saving the ones I took with my Canon M50 Mark II at 6MP. A 6MP image from that camera taken with a good lens gives sharper results than cell phone pictures with double the resolution. This video explains the reason very well!

    hi, interesting, what i like hands down , from a mirrorless camera is that micro adjusting is not an issue. In dslrs most lens have to be micro adjusted to get proper focus from the viewfinder, reason why many people see a quality upgrade in sharpness from mirrorless, a workarrounmd in dslrs is to shoot in liveview, but i find viewvinder compositioning more suitible and private than using liveview from a dslr.

    Resolution is important especially for subjects which need maximum detail. For example a river otter has astronomically high cuteness levels and currently no camera has enough resolution, dynamic range, and color depth to accurately represent just how cute river otters are. Thus even with a high res image, you will see the cuteness, but you won't get the sensation of the overwhelming waves of cuteness that you would experience when seeing one in real life.

  • @ge48421

    For me the biggest advantage of a mirrorless camera beyond weight and size is that you can judge the exposure before you take the shot with the help of a histogram and/or overexposure warnings. Digital cameras are quite unforgiving when you overexpose the highlights, especially when compared to negative film, and I find it's much easier to avoid blown-out highlights using an EVF when compared to a DSLR finder, I get it right the first time around and I don't have to 'chimp'.
    DSLRs still have their advantages, such as AF speed, battery life, and access to huge lens catalogs.

      Karl Taylor Absolutely. The Hasselblad H6 stuff probably demands a Patek Philippe Nautilus or an AP Royal Oak to keep pace, so I’m glad you’re keeping it real with the humble Rolex. And also that you are using it to dive with. Most divers wouldn’t actually risk diving with, and potentially scratching the case or sapphire crystal of, their Sub and would opt to wear something like a Seiko Marine Master to do the underwater work. I’m pleased you actually use it for its sporty credentials; it must be among the 5% or so of Submariners that see more action than a hotel swimming pool.

    This would've been really helpful to me! I started photography a year and a half ago with a Sony A7 + kit zoomlens. Then sold them both for actually more than I spend and bought an A7III + Sigma 50mm 1.4. Just because I thought 20mm was something not many use I bought a Sigma 20mm 1.4 to stand out with my pics some time later. Next the Sony 135mm 1.8 for dog pictures and portraits. Then an used Sigma 35mm 1.4 which I really love, it's not as sharp as the 50mm, but I love the wider view that's not so wide as the 20mm which deforms the pics too much. Finally an used Sony 85mm 1.8. In the end I wish I just bought the 85mm or 135mm, because I use those the most. Probably the 85mm because it's waaaay cheaper. And 35mm that I really love too. That would save me money to buy lights and other accessories.

    I would test the cameras instead of relying on the assumption that larger sensor is better. Sensor technology plays a huge role and you can easily have APS-C blowing Full Frame out of the water if you're not careful, especially if you're on a budget and looking for an older FF model which you can pay for. Also, while the photosites may be larger on a larger sensor, they don't have to be. Many camera makers don't publish how big their photosites actually are and having gaps between them is normal. So test, test, test.

A pro-photographer friend advised me to make sure my 'glass' was the best I could afford and to let the camera I get is based on budget and comfort at the start, and whichever leanings I have in subject matter dictate things when know better/can afford it.

    Took about the same steps when choosing my system, fujifilm with its many advantages AND disadvangtes. One for thing for instance that I noticed to suit at least me was that if say dropped a wide angle lens in a stream (which I did) its not a hassle to replace i compared to being a ff-variant.
    Hence, as you say, what and how you plan to use your gear and the budget should be 2 very considerable guide line.

    Help me, I want (have to) spend about €3000 for a new camera, I want do stills and video. I have been using a Canon 6d mk 1 for about €400 and I want to see a visible improvement in dynamic range and colour depth. I have lots of lenses, new and vintage. My best camera and lens guess at the moment is an A7iv and a Sigma Art 105mm f1.4. I do landscape photography and portraits and colour graded videos. A professional photographer told me that there will be no improvement from the 6d for stills, just for video and even that will be marginal (I use magic lantern for raw video on the 6d). What is your take on this? I would love to have the Sony A1 but for that price I would consider going medium format with the GFX 50 or another model from them and buy another cheaper camera for video.

    I sold my full frame bricks! Full frame is way over priced, super heavy, and just a way camera manufacturers pull more money out of your pocket with nonsense “camera snob” marketing. Micro 4/3 prints are every bit as good in my experience , usually better than my full frame Nikon and Canon prints. I’ve printed Micro 4/3 up to 24”x36” prints and even larger! And my new Olympus lenses are superb!

    Great vid. The difference in experience through the viewfinder with mirrorless is quite a key thing you didn't really touch on i.e. proper exposure and depth of field preview. Also autofocus improvements like full sensor AF points, eye autofocus and tracking which also can be used through the viewfinder. These are important for many people, especially those that photograph people outside of studio environments

      Hi Jonathan, you make some good points but you can have DOF preview through most DSLRs with the stop down button. I'm also sure at some point in the future EVFs will be so clear and sharp that it will almost be like looking at the real thing, when it does they will replace DSLRs but it's not there just yet.

    I think the best thing that somebody can do when trying to buy a camera, especially if it’s their first, is to rent a couple cameras and lenses some weekend and spend a couple hours shooting with two or three cameras that you might be interested in with a similar lens on each. Renting is so cheap that you can afford to do it for a weekend or couple days and could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars by jumping into a camera you know nothing about and then realizing that you don’t like it and either getting frustrated and giving up altogether or spending a lot of money switching cameras or systems.
    I know that a couple hours or days with a camera isn’t enough to tell if you love it or not, but it is usually enough to be able to tell if you hate it which can help in the buying decision.

    Hello Karl, I'm considering going into medium format (Hasselblad, Fuji or even Film) because i need better image quality (tonal gradiation, color rendition and resolution). What i don't understand is why would a medium format sensor give better image quality, if the pixel size is not bigger? For example my Sony a7iii has bigger pixels than the Hasselblad X1Dii or even the H6D 100C. Is it only because of color depht and color rendition (manufacture based), or are there some other points (exept the lenses and resolution)?

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  3 года назад +1

      You are absolutely right with your points and you should check out my other video on 'image quality'. One thing to consider is how light is laid down over a physical size area. So for example imagine each sensor as a piece of toast based on their physical size. Now imaging spreading butter on the toast (light). Which piece of toast has the most butter? However in saying that before making a decision on an expensive purchase you have to weigh up many of the factors covered in my other video and ALWAYS rent the camera first, try it and get some RAW test files to play with and compare to your existing system.

Just because a new model is released it doesn't mean you have to rush out and buy it if your current one is still doing what you bought it for.

    I always tell them to practice with their cellphone and learn the basics of composition and learn how to use the manual or "pro" mode(i know apriture is limited on most phones) on their phone.
    And when they are comfortable with composition and

      @Julian Smith And then again, it all comes to personal preferences I think. I still like the colours Canon produces and it's sufficient for me still. Canon Eos R or R6 can be AS future proof as Sony E-mount. There is not one system better than the other. Canon is not better than Sony, Sony is not better than Canon. Or Nikon. Or Panasonic. Or Fuji. Or Olympus. And so on. Professional camera's can be equipped with different mounts as well, so Canon EF L glass can be put on other brands (like Black Magic PCC 6K).

    Great explanations until giving specific size for medium format (although accurate) which doesn't have a standard size. There's at least 5 sizes considered medium format (645,6x7,6x9, etc).
    Also low light performance is more based on SNR firmware than sensor size. You wouldn't say a 1st gen Canon 5D FF (full frame) has better low light performance than a Nikon D500 DX (aps-c).
    Updated
    *Although FF typically performs better than aps-c or smaller than full frame (35mm) size sensors. As new technology grows digital noise has become a thing of the past. The Fuji X-T3, Nikon Z 50, Canon EOS R, Sony A6400 even cameras as old as the D300s ($150+$100 for a 50mm f1.8 lens) which are all under $1000 new or used have great iso 3200 performance which is more than enough with today's tech like Topaz Denoise Ai or Luminar where you literally just click a button to remove noise from decent exposure. Topaz even has a video software the up scales low res video with insane results no exaggeration.*
    Karl I think maybe a "histogram" video would be great if you haven't made one. Seeing what's a crushed black and a clipped highlight.
