I agree with your choice of the Meyer.... I use a Berg Larsen HR, 110/1 on my Martin Committee Bari, circa 1955/57. The Berg has always worked for me , I use a Meyer 6m for my alto, also a Martin... 🎷

I don’t play much Bari these days, but when I bought my Bari (a Vito VSP made by Yanigisawa back around 1982 or so , I picked up a Berg Larson 130/0 metal and been playing that ever since !
I have been enormously impressed by the Vandoren V16 B9 Hard Rubber. I prefer it to my Otto Link 7* HR or my Berg SS 115/0 both of which are brilliant!
Great video! I have been waiting for a video like this one. I play Bari in a local community band. I am using an old Whitehall mouthpiece, very easy to play , but I can’t get a big sound out of it when I need to. I just purchased a Yamaha 5c , on a budget, to try and get bigger sound. I really liked the Otto link and the Meyer, they sounded great. Thanks for the content Jay, keep them coming!
I used to play Bari sax (a rental from the old school) but once I moved schools they didn't let me since there where too many at my new school so now I only play Alto sax but I also do play base drum and bassoon because I still kinda miss being apart of that big ensemble bass foundation that we all love.
I'm interested in the Jody Jazz mouthpieces in particular the non-metal Jet. Also the Dukoff M7. Hopefully those are in the next videos! Thanks for doing this!
I’ve been playing bari for about 2 years now in my schools jazz band. I want to get a good mouthpiece (i play a 5c which isn’t enough anymore) and buy a more permanent investment on a more expensive one. I haven’t been pulling the trigger because I’m playing on my schools bari and don’t want to spend a ton money on an instrument that isn’t mine. I have the metal lite mouthpiece on my also and it’s okay, best one I can get without spending $250 and I will probably get it for my bari. I don’t know if the metalite will be good though and again, I don’t want to spend a ton of money on an instrument that isn’t mine and they could take at any moment.
I’m just used to having to try too hard on tenor, alto and soprano so it’s difficult to lay back on the Yamaha 5C but when you do you can sculpt some butter.
Very interesting. I preferred the Yamaha. Both Ricos sounded fairly similar to the Yamaha. Were I being forced to spend more, the Otto Link would be my choice, but I'd still prefer the Yamaha. Fortunately for me, I use the Yamaha 5c myself (on a Chinese cheapo instrument which came with a gawdawful noname mp) and I agree, the 5c is easy to play. I usually use Fibracell reeds.
I just watched this video tis morning. Timely for me because I bought an old Martin Handcraft Bari off eBay yesterday, no mouthpiece included. I considered picking up a Rico for cheap just to have something. Jay confirmed for me what I felt playing the Ricos on alto and tenor. I finally gave up on cheap mouthpieces and bought Meyer 6Ms (then some Rousseaus, an Ebolin, a Steve Broadus, an Otto Link, a Charles Lakey. . . ) My sax tech has a Meyer 6M for bari, I am going to buy that to start off with.
Awesome video Jay! If I were to go with one out of these it would definitely be the link. That was the closest to the Ronnie Cuber sounds you were going for. Very Excited to hear the Jody pieces and the V16(I was thinking of upgrading to the V16 on Bari because I play it on tenor and I love it)
I will wholeheartedly vouch for the RICO Metalite. It’s super freeblowing, and completely opens up the full register of the horn. It does take a little getting used to, especially if you’re coming from the Yamaha 5c, which by comparison is super stuffy. Never tried the M7 but from what I hear is not nearly as good as the M5. The common opinion is that the M7 is far too open and resistant. Personally, I’d say go for the M5 mouthpiece. Been playing a year and it’s brilliant, especially for $20.
Good comparison, thank you. Can't wait to hear your metal mp reviews. I was playing a Link Tone Edge HR 7* then bought a new Lawton Bronze 7 STAR after playing a friend's vintage one. Couldn't make it work at all! Turns out my friend's was a 6 STAR which works better for me. Fairly bright, gruff sound - more Ronnie Cuber than Jerry Mulligan though I'm light years away from either of those guys - who isn't!
You Frekaing LEGEND! I'M LITERALLY BUYING ONE RIGHT NOW. I have a couple of Vandoren b25 and b35 on order right now from two weeks ago, but they aren't expected to arrive until March 18th so I'll keep posted!
Thank you so much for a Bari video. My first mouthpiece this time around, after no Bari for 50 years was a Rico Graftonite. I thought it was good until I got an Otto Link Tone Edge. I liked it until I got a Jody Jazz HR6 and it is still my all around mouthpiece. However I got a really good deal on a Berg Larsen hard rubber 110, 1 M and I love it. I currently play a ‘49 Buescher Aristocrat but I would sure like to try a Yanagisawa. Here’s a thought. When you hit a million subscribers have a contest and give one away. 😉
One way to maximize the playability of the Rico mouthpieces is to use them with Rico (D'addario) reeds. I prefer the Graftonite over the Metallite. I get a good sound for very little $. That said I wish the Grftnite came in a 9.
My Hanson Bari came with a Meyer7 so I’ve bought a Yamaha5c to get me going I’m using Legeres Am cut but needed to go up a half size compared to my Alto.
I play a Yanagisawa stock for classical/quartet stuff, and a metal Otto Link (7 opening) for jazz. You definitely sounded better starting with the stock mpc, but I liked the Link best. Glad to see you on the bari, next let's hear the bass!
When I first bought an Alto eight years ago it came with a cheap m/p. Worked on it to open it up. Great. Just a bit more. Dammit! Bought a Yamaha 4c then a 6c dropped it got a 7c. Can't fault them for the price £26. Upgraded to Beechler Bellite 8 - 🗣️ wallpaper stripper! LoL. Bought a straight Soprano two years ago. Got a Yamaha 7c to use until I got used to it. People tell me it has a sweet sound so still play it. BTW you sound great on that Bari - Gerry Mulligan roll over 👍 LoL
Dayna Stephens here. Crazy Jay, you sound great on every one but weirdly I loved the Graftonite the best lol, then the Yani, Meyer, Link, Metalite then the old faithful Yamaha. Baritone is my fav sax and I tend to like fuzzy and stuffy/warm which is funny enough exactly how you described it in a bad way lol I currently play a stock Yani refaced by Sebastian Knox that is the best mouthpiece I own on any horn but for $19 I'm definitely going to try that Graftonite. Cheers
Hey Dayna thanks for watching and your kind comment. That is funny though. I need to give that one another blow now a year later and see. That Yani piece is very nice though for a dark warm and fuzzy sound.
Yamaha 5C sounded good. Nothing super outstanding, but sounded good. The Rico sounded really pinched, especially when you went to the higher register. Good price though! Rico Metalite overall sounded ok, but wasn't over impressed. Yanagisawa sounded really full to me. I liked this one. Otto link Tone Edge - Overall best sounding one to my ear. Low notes were full, with good punch. Higher register sounded great as well. Meyer 9 - well, been using a Meyer in one form or another since about 1982 so, have a real bias towards it. Curious how the different mouthpieces were with intonation. Thanks for your videos!
Hi Jay, congratulations on your 100k award. Great video as always - I don’t play Bari (senior management says she thinks SAT is enough!) but I really enjoyed your reviews. It’s amazing just how good a Yamaha mpc is at such a price point. Looking forward to hearing the more expensive ones. Keep up the great work.
Could definitely tell the difference in sound, but your feedback on how hard it was to play and what kinds of bands they work in are really valuable. Thanks!
Thanks for this video man... I play a Vandoren B75 and I need another mouthpiece that has sort of a “tighter” (for lack of a better word) tip opening and that’s obviously cheaper, so this video helped a lot Thanks
Great video Jay! I played a lot the Otto Link 7 and a Leybayle 8. But I've been surprised by the Yamaha (I have a 6C) exactly for what you say (easyness of playing, with reasonably good sound), but also for being so in tune (I play a King Zephyr beginning '50s). But lacks of volume. Now I get the best of my baritone with a Francois Louis, quite open, but price so different...can't compare with the Yamaha, which I find by the way outstanding for the price.
Are there a million sax players? I mean, I consider myself way more of a bass clarinetist, but I play tenor and I think i find a lot of good info through your videos that are relevant for all reed Instruments
I own a Rico m7 for the bari and for me it works very well it’s a bit darker than my normal mouthpiece which is a Jody jazz jet so it was interesting to see what you had to say.
Looking forward to the next video, like to hear a Jody Jazz mouthpiece. I was also interested in your comments on reed strength, found it very useful..
totally with you on the metalite. i was on one for a bit recently, on my b901, it's def easy and loud, but just sounds very bleh. can't say i understand so many bari players swearing by them, outside of marching band.
I bought a metalite m7 as as change from my stock old yamaha ybsL1 that came with my 61 Bari. The Rico was a mess. The tip was not cut anywhere near in the same plane as the table. The tip opening was about .100 on one side or the reed and about .075 on the other.I took a picture of it and emailed to rico and got no response back. It was less than $30 so at least it wasn't an expensive lesson.
The Graftonite and Metalite sound ok at first, mostly because Jay's a pro, but if you skip to hear the first few notes of Moanin with every mpc one after the other, you quickly understand why they're so cheap.
I also play the Yamaha 5C in a brass band for years now and it suits my limited abilities best! A Selmer E and a Berg-Larsen that I tried before did impress me as well, but their sound was too rude, too pushy for our brass band that plays a lot of traditional Austrian music, in my opinion.😊
The Meyer is the only hard rubber mouthpiece I’ve ever bought! It’s warm, full tone and versatility can’t be beat. The Yani is the only other piece you tried here that had a comparable tone. That said, a hard rubber piece is no match for a large brass band or rock band. Of all the ones I found in any store, a Rovner metal is the warmest and easiest to play of them all.
The 5c I think has a manufacturing defect---It has a scribe that cuts around the mouthpiece and cuts into the flat -table surface --this allows wetness to bubble out between the reed and mouthpiece . the reed cannot fit on the table with an airtight seal. I have to use lipgloss or other sealant for tight fit.

Thanks!
You deserve so many more subs... Thanks for everything !
The Yani sounds nice too !
Thanks for this video man... I play a Vandoren B75 and I need another mouthpiece that has sort of a “tighter” (for lack of a better word) tip opening and that’s obviously cheaper, so this video helped a lot
Thanks
Hey Jay, I was really looking forward to this. Thanks for the overview. I'm going to need a new bari mouthpiece soon
You've gotta try the jupiter bari sax mouthpiece that comes with its own ligature, best sound and value that doesn't break the bank.
Liked the last one best; very impressed with YOUR versatility! Thanks! 🚀
That Yanagisawa mouthpiece was so awesome listening to compared to the others.
It was less than $30 so at least it wasn't an expensive lesson.
yeah, not fun to play that one.
Proud of you jay
Thank you Jay, it will be cool a review about Soprano Sax Mouthpieces
I'll do that at some point.
Jay, for comparison - what mouthpiece do you usually play on bari (incl. tip opening)? The M7 is about a .110" (inch) opening.
Jody HR, Jody Jet, Vandoren V16, Vandoren V5 Jazz, Dukoff, Berg Larsen or Drake rollover would be good for 200 to 400.
We'll be seeing some of those for sure.
My favorite sax is the Alto sax and that is the one I play!
Great Idea and right on time. I'm getting a baritone sax this summer, your videos will be very helpful!
A Meyer 9 ... holy crap! 7* or 8 tip on bari for me ... I tend to prefer smaller tip openings though, my alto is a 6*.
The Graftonite and Metalite sound ok at first, mostly because Jay's a pro, but if you skip to hear the first few notes of Moanin with every mpc one after the other, you quickly understand why they're so cheap.
YES, the internet was in sore need of good videos on baritone gear! Also might I ask, where do you take your mouthpieces to get worked on?
Phil Engleman of Phil-Tone Mouthpieces
@@bettersax Thank you!
I personally think the Yani sounded best, specifically in the lower range (although that's probably cause you've had work done on it).
I liked the sound of the Otto Link MP the best!! Looking forward hearing the other comparison videos. 😁
I liked the Yamaha 5 c for the price.
i cant wait to use my 5C soon
The Meyer is the only hard rubber mouthpiece I’ve ever bought! It’s warm, full tone and versatility can’t be beat. The Yani is the only other piece you tried here that had a comparable tone. That said, a hard rubber piece is no match for a large brass band or rock band. Of all the ones I found in any store, a Rovner metal is the warmest and easiest to play of them all.
The 5c I think has a manufacturing defect---It has a scribe that cuts around the mouthpiece and cuts into
the flat -table surface --this allows wetness to bubble out between the reed and mouthpiece .
the reed cannot fit on the table with an airtight seal. I have to use lipgloss or other sealant for tight fit.
Bari Sax stuff! Yay!
Don't know if you have tried D'Addario Tenor m/pieces. Seen a couple of good players using these. Clear and powerful. Around £150.
