Thanks for explaining the subtle details that make the difference between an OK fly and a good fly (at least from the fisherman’s perspective! :-). Very well done.

Hi, Jim, Feels gratifying, getting a few words of recognition for the fine points I try to include in all my writing and vids. Thanks. Skip

Also, out of all the videos I have seen where peacock hearl was used you are the first person that I have seen wrap the hearl around the thread. I have been wondering how I was going to strengthen the hearl so it doesn't get bit once or twice and basically just fall off, thank you for that!!! I look forward to seeing more of your videos!

Hi, Randy. Yes, herl is fragile. I always reinforce it somehow, either with thread or a rib. Glad that helped.

Thanks for this. Just starting my tying for a trip up the Nooksack River in August. Will definitely tie up a few RW's.

Hi, Barry. You're most welcome. It is a fun fly to fish. The Royal Wulff should work on both resident trout and, if they're in the mood for it, sea-run cutts. You could encounter both on the Nooksack. Best, Skip

Great fly and history Skip. Just saw an old video of Joan Wullf telling about the origin of the Wulff series of dry flies. The first one was the White Wullf made to imitate the eastern green drake coffin fly. By the way try the white Wullf on western streams on summer evenings, easy to see and even tailwater trout will hammer it.

      Hi, Wyomingtrout,
You're most welcome. I like the White Wulff too--catches trout, hard to miss on the water for the fly fisher. I have learned to be careful about all-white flies though. If cottonwood trees are dropping their snowy seeds on the water, trout won't touch a fly that resembles them, which a White Wulff does. I've run into this a few times. Then I switch to a darker fly and suddenly the trout are back.

Thanks Skip for giving Uncle Dickie a plug for initiating the term "Pinch Wrap" as it pertains to fly tying. I never saw Dick tie the Royal Wulff but I have an old VCR tape of him tying the Lime Trude which was Jackson Hole One fly winner way back in time. The Lime Trude utilizes calf tail for the wing and Dick suggested coming out the ends of the calf tail to separate the crinkle in the fibers so they would stack evenly while using a standard hair stacker. Have you ever employed this technique before stacking calf tail?

Hi, Wyoming. Yes, I recommend combing out fibers of most hairs before stacking them--especially calf tail. It does separate out the fibers, but it also takes out the fibers that are too short and get in the way of tying. Best, Skip

A trick I use when working with hackle is to leave a small (1/8") tag on the feather past the string where the hackle was tied off. This allows me to make sure the stem of the feather doesn't give me any trouble. As I have OCD I have had to come up with ways to avoid aggravating myself with feather stems and such. As well I would have wrapped both hackles at once to avoid any issues. Although I do have a lot of really beautiful flies 😆😆😆

Hi, Randy, Yes, lots of tiers wind two dry-fly hackles at once and like the results. I just do best by winding them one at a time.

Yeah, we're figuring out how much to put in a video so it doesn't become a feature-length movie--I guess I have a lot to say. Glad you liked it.

i think the fly should be ribbed with wire or nylon for much more durability and i always coat the entire underbody with superglue before winding peacock or the floss..amazing how well this fly catches fish probably till the end of time i would guess...ive tied many many of them and when you finish one its a fly you just sit back and admire for a second if tied correctly...lee could tie the fly in hand without a vice and when once asked why he thought fish liked it so much he said i suppose to a fish it must look like a pice of strawberry shortcake..the hackle you tied it with really was furnace and not brown but i think it looks better with the dark center a furnace hackle has just like his white wulff..

I'm sure those steps do make a tough Royal Wulff. I've found spinning the peacock together with the tying thread does the job to my satisfaction. Of course the thread had better be fairly strong. . .

You need to start using UV glues, way better than super glue.
