I got a Fender Lap Steel Guitar & Fender Amp given to me from the 1960's by my late mother's boyfriend when I was a kid in the 70's. My mother would not let me keep it or the Fender amp. Instead, I got a electric guitar from Carvin & a Kustom solid-state tuck/rolled 100W amp for X-Mas, which I enjoyed more because there was noone interested in a lap steel outside Country and Gospel when I was a kid. It was all about Rock & Blues & I ended up playing Guitar & Drums. I did know and played music with the late Pedal Steel Pioneer named Zane Beck ! ! ! 👍😎 DDH 10-7-2020.
This company represents Italian craftsmanship well! I never knew they existed until Darrell made that guitar video awhile back. If I ever get rich, I will get me one. I saw they also have some awesome handwired amplifiers. They have a super cool little 6 watt that I have to have! Lol
Bryan Wayne Paoletti guitars are absolutely gorgeous, and I would love to get my hands on one someday. They sell in shops in Italy, but I sadly don’t live there anymore. One day, I will get one. I swear on my life.
Dude, your timing is crazy. I just built one out of a 2x4 and some spare parts this weekend with my daughter for her school project. Now we're both learning to play it.
They should send one to Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe. She will make it sing. She has a few tutorials up in you want to look them up. If you don't know her, definitely look her up, she freaking ROCKS. She plays blues in "Open G" tuning, wearing a thumb pick and two finger picks like Mother Maybelle.
He had a pretty dang good background to begin with. A musician as good as Darrell, can pretty much play anything with strings without much effort. I have a feeling he will play and practice on this thing alot. He will master it in no time.
I'm sure he will pick this up fast. But I noticed that he wasn't muting the strings behind the steel slide as you do when playing slide guitar. So are regular lap steels different? Do you not have to mute behind the slide to eliminate the harmonics?
This opens whole new guitar vistas, Darrell. Maybe you’ll do a video on C6 tuning, which is a whole other sound. I also loved the string pulls behind the bar.
As an Italian myself I can testify the statement saying "We have perfected the art of living" Darrell from now on you have been officially adopted into the family.
I've built over 2000 lap steel style "Melobar" guitars, Gilmore's auction actually sold one of our instruments (Magazine article on the Melobarted blog), and I have to say, I absolutely love everything they've done with this steel...Big Node Paoletti, WELL DONE!!
I own a cheap lap guitar for years now, but never actually tried to learn to play it. This video wants to make me get it out of the bag and immediately try those techniques Darrell used. Thanks Darrell for that kick in my lazy butt! 👍🏻
Just tune it to a chord and slide around, even I can do that, so can you! I like using G or A, because then the 2-3-4 strings (best for sliding) are the same as standard tuning on a guitar, and I like the "tonality" (is that a thing?).
Next time I'm in Canada (when they open the country again) I have to meet you Darrell. Your site is fantastic with great content, objective commentary, and great playing. So much fun!
Darrell -- Thanks for sharing this. Love it. I'm not sure if you're monitoring this, but try muting the back side of the steel. Drag your pinkie behind the steel. I think you'll like the sound better.
Legs and a trem, this lap guitar has it all! I’m in love with the lap/steel sounds as well and went with the Ricky lap steel from Eastwood. Really like the sound of that single coil. It surely is an extremely well done boutique instrument and so glad they sent the offer. It was a great demo.
So far, I have made two lap steel guitars. Last night I tuned mine like a regular guitar and had fun playing it like lead guitar. It takes me 5 days to make a hollow body lap steel... I normally make violins. My current project is a 6.5 foot tall electric contra upright bass!!! I liked the video!!!
I came across a lap steel in a 2nd hand shop around 20 years ago - I asked to try it and the owner wasn't keen, I guess he was surprised when I returned the next day and bought it... Much like you, I was inspired by Gilmour, and while I don't play it often I keep it around and it has made it's way on to a few recordings over the years.
Lap steel is a blast, and there is a LOT you can do with it once you get the hang of how to play with the slide. Check out a guy named Sol Hoopi, he is the reason people sound the way they do on it now. He also came up with 2 of the more useful tunings for the thing. He only recorded for about 15 years, though he was in a few movies, too, when they wanted a steel player. Definitely the guy to check out. FUN instrument.
Paoletti has got their own signature look and vibe - something I like a lot. The lap steel sounded great, though I was waiting for you to slam on some heavy overdrive. I liked your bending the string behind the slide. Hadn't seen that before - cool trick. Thanks
The scale of this steel guitar is 25.5" which is very long for lap steel. 22.5" and 24.5" are much more useful scales lengths. Bar slants work best with SHORT scale lap steel guitars. Don Helms, Jerry Byrd, Leon McAuliffe, Santo Farina (Sleepwalk) etc all played 22.5" scale steel guitars.
Pedal Steel is a whole 'nuther universe , by exponential factor . Lap Steel , Dobro, and Weisenborn , you use left hand and right hand . Pedal Steel uses Left & Right hand , And multiple foot pedals, And multiple knee levers at the same time , Plus a volume pedal .
They chose well... After seeing your t-style paoletti and now this... I'm just starting my guitar journey but I already know I want one of their guitars one day... Quite likely one of these :)
You know the knobs are actually the firing pin side of a 12-gauge shotgun cartridge, do you? :-D I love how you are able to get some interesting sounds off an instrument you DON'T usually play or you never played before... I would be jealous, but I understand how you do that because of your many years of study and practice. So kudos for that. And thank you for your videos. Keep up the good work. :-)
Lap steel provides instant giddiness as seen here. Lap steel is a great tool for guitar players to have handy. It is a great sound and can be very versatile especially for recording to ad some flavor to certain songs. I personally tune to the Nashville open E as Gilmore did. This Paoletti brand must be pricey with all the historical wood and brass loaded on it and the the fact that they give no prices on their web site would indicate that this is a high priced item. The old wood and brass is not necessary as there are many lap steels out there for a few hundred bucks that get the job done .The take away here is that lap steel is fun and every guitarist should have one. Let the giddy giggles continue.
When I playing lap steel, only tuning what I use is Open C# Minor-tuning, aka C# G# C# G# C# E. I don't know why that is only what I like to use. It's feel more natural to me, and it's also work when you want play something much atmospheric, and melancholic.
Actually it was a LAP steel pickup , specifically from the Fender Champion , Pedal Steel wasn't invented until circa 1954 , didn't become wide spread until late 50's . For your further trivia , the Fender Champ amplifiers were introduced as the companion piece for the Champion Steel Guitar , it was an accident that it later also worked well with armpit guitars .
One of my early Gibson catalogues on their Hawaiian guitars stated "incorrectly referred to as a steel guitar". In school our music teacher referred to his Rickenbacker as an electric Hawaiian guitar.
If you do to this one what you did to the shock the fox, with the ratio tuners, Lambertone and Porter pickups, etc she will be a great sounding and looking guitar! I don't know how much all of those parts would increase the cost of the build but it would/could make a good raffle item.
Cool vid! I think it would be a great vid if you did a strat comparison with lace sensor pickups, noiseless or stacked, active, standard single coil, and also use new 10 way switch. Maybe get an out of phase for Brian May tones
Darrell, when playing any steel guitar, the little finger and ring finger of your left hand should rest on the strings. It gives you a mellower tone and sounds less tinny.
Yep, at least he's got the main 2 fingers correct though (Next to the thumb). I've seen plenty of RUclips guitarists take up steel and hold their bar in all sorts of contortionist ways.
Also, check out, DELTA MOON, out of Atlanta, one of the best ever Delta Blues Band, from my old Stomping Ground!! Look for, GOING DOWN SOUTH, here on You Tube, an old Bluesman's Cover.
When i was a kid i used to sneak off with my dads airline, grab a deep 3/4socket and do this. Had no idea what a slide guitar was untill well into my teens.
I always wanted to try one but alas, I suck at slide and I am not much of a finger picker either. I do still have my Pink Floyd albums from the 70's down in the basement so I got that going for me!
Yo Darrell, what's the guitar hanging just to the right of you at the beginning of the video? Looks sort of light blue(?) with the matching headstock...
Beautiful. My Dad played the Steel Guitar and in 1971 I gave him a Fender as Father's Day gift. He played and played. AWESOME!
It's always a fun experience to show you guys an instrument I've never played before!
Bit of a learning curve, but so much fun :)
wht is that
I love guitars but can't play😟
You should check out a Chapman Stick!
Dont forget to pin your own comments friend!
I found a cheap harley benton lap steel guitar it's £55 in the UK. In Canada it's $55
That t style pickup is actually a lap steel pickup. Fender used a lap steel pickup in the original Esquire and Telecaster.
Yep.
They still look the same after all these years.
That's cool - I didn't know that.
Very cool sound.

I did not know that, but that explains a lot tone-wise.
Instant Spongebob clean tone
Just what I needed for my spongebob cover band
Literally what I thought!
Lol
I’m Italian, and that bit about hospitality was so true 😂😂
We never know when to quit!

not a bad thing lol

Completely agree. Larkin Poe is amazing.
Never seen her play anything other than the Ricky...?
@@pharmerdavid1432 Maybe a bit later now but she currently plays a Beard
Darrell "Guys, I don't play Lap-Steel"
*immediately plays amazing blues slide guitar*
Not sure I believe you Darrell.. Looks like a Blast! :)
He had a pretty dang good background to begin with. A musician as good as Darrell, can pretty much play anything with strings without much effort. I have a feeling he will play and practice on this thing alot. He will master it in no time.

Steel Guitars are so cool, and are still so relevant in their quality! Awesome showcase man!
The tons & volume are the brass from 12 gage shotgun shell’s
This opens whole new guitar vistas, Darrell. Maybe you’ll do a video on C6 tuning, which is a whole other sound. I also loved the string pulls behind the bar.
5:19 , that sounds something came out of Spongebob Squarepants! lol 🤣
It sort of sounds like Spongebob 😆
As an Italian myself I can testify the statement saying "We have perfected the art of living" Darrell from now on you have been officially adopted into the family.
La FAMIGLIA! ;o)
Benvenuto!!
Yes, but if you try to get out.... they'll pull you back in!
@@KutWrite Mama mia! Mingia!
I love that bending notes from behind the bar trick! Thanks for that tip!
I used to watch Darrell’s videos for the great guitar info, but since he added the new intro, I love watching him fall in the snow.
Thanks Darrell I Build And Teach Lap Steel guitar Thats A Good looking lap Steel hope you have A Great Week 🎸🎻🎼

Man lap steels can sound nasty as hell, in all the best ways! I’d love to have one.

Fussiest Goblin first thing that came to mind
I love the sound of a lap steel guitar. Now I want to PLAY ONE
Nobody:
RUclips: SPONGEBOB GUITAR THEME
Listen to Pink Floyd's High Hopes off the live Pulse album. Best lap steel solo ever.
Lap steel can give so much effect to a song. I use it quite often even if I don't play much country.
I came across a lap steel in a 2nd hand shop around 20 years ago - I asked to try it and the owner wasn't keen, I guess he was surprised when I returned the next day and bought it...

Interesting the knobs read Fiocchi, that's an ammunition factory, and indeed the knobs look like the back of a projectile.
An ITALIAN ammunition company ! ( Albeit , most of their metallic ammunition for the North American market is mfg in their plant in Missouri .)
Paoletti has got their own signature look and vibe - something I like a lot. The lap steel sounded great, though I was waiting for you to slam on some heavy overdrive. I liked your bending the string behind the slide. Hadn't seen that before - cool trick. Thanks
That thing is a thing of beauty....very cool

Cool, hopefully you go all the way and get into pedal steel ;) Lovely lap steel you have.
Pedal Steel is a whole 'nuther universe , by exponential factor .

Steels are so fun to play!!! And that ones sweet!!!
That blues part at 4:12 reminds me of the SnowRunner music
I'm a pedal steel guitar player, and that guitar looks great! I'd have loved to hear it tuned to C6 though.
Steve Howe did some great things with a lap steel as well.
Hell YES, most of Going For The One is played on his Fender twin neck lappy
Thanks Darrell
Now I want a lap steel
This looks and sounds amazing! All my respect to lap steel players
this is amazing
this thingie would complement my living room furniture perfectly :)))
I don't know how to play one either but I just bought (an inexpensive) one recently and it's very fun to "play".

I clicked on this video knowing Mr.Gilmour used this instrument and then you brought the name up! Awesome!
Solo on lap steel in “High Hopes” by Pink Floyd is one of the most emotional guitar solos I’ve heard!
I made a lap steel out of pine and some old guitar parts. I'd recommend it.
?? Why does it have a trem system? A lap steel IS a trem system! Whoa! Darrell did a country pull!
You know the knobs are actually the firing pin side of a 12-gauge shotgun cartridge, do you? :-D

Have you ever reviewed DIY KIT guitars including the C.B. Gitty Lap Steel Kit ? Price ?

Great review!
How do they authenticate the wood is from the 1800's and is it as good a tonewood as from the 1700's?
Jack Flank they use wine casks from their winery whose casks were made in the 1800’s.
My introductory course in these contraptions.
1:29 yes! now you can do a high hopes solo cover
The Allman brothers also often had slide guitar featured in many songs.
Yep, they sure did. Bless your heart...
Sorry I meant jesica
I got a Lap steel from my great grandad when he died I don't use it often but it's real nice
Look up Junior Brown's Git-Steel. It's half Tele, half lap steel in one guitar!
Love this video, ever hear of Cindy Cashdollar? She giged with a lot of great guitar players like Frank Zappa.
Depending on one's perspective , Zapa is a guy who played with Cashdollar ( her real name) .
