Born in 1868 in a musical family of railway laborers in Texarkana, Arkansas, Scott Joplin was an American composer & pianist who wrote 40 original ragtime piano pieces. Scott Joplin considered ragtime to be a form of classical music.
The musical atmosphere present in the South, work songs, gospel hymns, spirituals and the combination of the influences of classical music have contributed significantly to the invention of a new style that blended African-American musical styles with European forms and melodies.
Described as the archetype of the classic rag due to its rhythmic patterns, melody lines and harmony, The "Maple Leaf Rag" is one of his first and most popular pieces. As a result, Scott Joplin became dubbed the "King of Ragtime".
