Excellent idea that also is practical as the top of a carving table for rotary power tool carvers. If fitted as the lid to a dust extraction unit, this should allow the dust from carving to easily be pulled away from the piece being carved too.
Thanx for the tip. If you fix a cam (off-centred oval) head to the top of each dowel and simply press each dowel into a peg-hole near to the edge of the work-piece. Treat each cam-head as a thumb-screw. Then twist the cam-heads until they each press tightly up against the work. (may be an over-kill though)
What a great idea, thank you. You could also make it a foot wider and attach sharpening stones and strops on the side of the work piece for convenience.
The Carving Shop Sorry, Joe. I was just pulling your leg. It’s so brilliantly simple that I made one in about 30 minutes before carving club this morning (Council Oakes Woodcarvers, Southbend, Indiana) and everyone was taking pictures of it to make one of their own! I also took your advise about the Shaaf Tools. I’m sure glad I ran into you here on RUclips. I’m a subscriber now, you betcha.
@@NMranchhand Thank you for your kind words. I wish you a blessed New Year to you and your carving club. I am planning new videos for the new year, including stone carving. No, not getting stoned, carving. Carving limestone and marble is very exciting.

Thank you so much! I am going to try this!!! Looks like it might work for stone too? Perhaps it'll work for the marble gnome I'm working on!

Inexpensive way to keep that work still. Good job man.
Dogs and holes are usually 3/4". These are half that. Will that really be strong enough? (I'm just readying to drill my bench top.)
Better to make one of these boards and dog that to your bench instead. You need 3/4" dogs to hold work to which you are working with force or power.
Do you have a Sketchup plan available for this?
sorry I do not. Just drill a bunch of random holes in a board.
