- Christmas is great! Until you get your $1500 drone stuck 50 feet in a tree! With no one to call I put together a tested rig made of a slingshot and fishing reel to try and retrieve it.

Great video, Will! I put my Phantom into about 10 feet of water in the Sacramento River in Redding, CA. I shook out the water and flew it again. DJI makes an awesome product.

So glad you got that down!!! I just got mine stuck in a tree. My udi discovery hd decided at about 100 feet to start to control itself and fly over the trees and then fall into a tree.I thought of using my fishing pole but we are in a blizzard so i cant go out and try again.

i got mine caught in 160 ft tree. had litchi waypoint mission set for 24,000 feet. set mission altitude at 250 ft. at 3000 feet away the elevation was about 80-100 ft higher than home point. long story short. do your homewprk b4 u fly. lol

my drone is stuck 80 ft up. I've tried everything I have. but don't have the money to buy what I need. but it got stormed on last night so its probably ruined now

I got mine stuck the other day. It was up about 70 feet. I called my yard guy who works part time for a tree trimming firm. He brought a small bag full of weights tied to a long very thin, but strong, string. He looped the bag over the limb and the bag fell back to the ground. he then took both ends of the string and shook the limb and viola, it fell right out.
I think the title's a bit misleading, more a case of drone rescue with a pole.

Hi Will, great video's. I also just bought a GoPro hero4 silver and DJI Phantom 1. Glad to see you got yours back out of the tree. I have been experimenting with the GoPro and Phantom, but not at the same yet. Just wondering when you will be posting the dual battery setup video and which setup you ending up choosing? Cheers.

You can individually charge those cells back to a balanced charge. That would save them.
Just got mine for Christmas and already had to cut down a 20 ft tree to get it out and now I get it stuck in a 50 foot tree. I went to Home Depot and bought light pipes that were very flimsy and didn’t work.
Right there with you Xmas drone in a tree... Watching all these videos working on at least a 75foot retrieval... slingshot still not getting close enough to the branch.
Next up bow and arrow method.

Uhhh you advertise a fishing reel -but all you used was a pole. Video is horrible can barely tell what you did to secure the pool together and what kind of pulls it was you don’t explain anything
Remarkable video & production - especially for those of us with drones currently sequestered in trees and adhering solemnly to the oath of never leaving ours behind. I've independently developed a system very similar to yours, but I leave the reel on the pole handle, then stake the handle into the ground with only the lower half of the pole aimed at the stranded drone. I have experienced some success, but in my case my current two tree-bound drones are buried in much more foliage and one may be a little higher than 50', so still working on them. Usually, when I get the light test line within an effective vicinity of the drone, I attach it to heavier fish line, twine or even rope, and in one case metal rope, if the initial line is too light to effectively dislodge it. I can vouch for your ideas of starting with heavy line, using the high power elastic tubing, painting the weight, and your suggestion about retrieving the weight by working it to and fro while reeling it in through the branches so as to not wrap around a branch as all valuable suggestions. Mine are the much less expensive C5X's, so flirting with the treetops and retrieving them later has become a sport in and of itself. My two most exhilarating recoveries, however, were using one drone to accelerate upward so as to bump and lift a stranded drone off of a fairly high power line. I've done this twice now, but bear in mind that the rescue drone is at risk for becoming similarly stranded, and then you'd be doubly screwed.
Same thing happened to me i crashed my drone in a tree and had to go on vacation for Christmas and my friend retrieved it.

Your slingshot is not powerful enough; I have purchased a more powerful one, with a system to block its rotation, so it is possible to have both power and precision; it is worth its prize.

I think You are so Lucky as the look on your Wifes face was not good, I would think you will do good to stay away from trees, that's a lot of money to have stuck up 100' up
Damn nerds always getting their toys stuck in trees. I was filled with disappointment when you made your nerd toy retriever and could not get the fish from the sky. I'm guessing you did not get high enough? You should be thankful for that old guy who used his giant stick (with a hook in the end) to retrieve your flying fish with a camera mount.
I really, really love to see these super over priced DJI drones get stuck, crashed, lost, etc. I laugh my ass off. I have a few quads that cost $150-$200 that do everything I need. No way will I pay over $1,000 for a hobby drone. Professional work is a whole different ball game and The DJI Phantom doesn't fit that bill properly.
