You guys know I'm all about that printing life. I find my greatest satisfaction in creating framed prints of my work. But these prints can't just collect dust in the storage unit - they need to be SEEN. That's why I love doing art festivals.
Sure, sure, it's great if you can sell a print and make some of your money back, but really I'm mostly after that spiritual currency. You know...fulfillment bucks, enlightenment dollars, satisfaction coins. They may not buy you a Big Mac but believe you me they'll feed your soul.
Creating something you're proud of, putting it in front of people, engaging with viewers, seeing their reactions - that'll rack up the fulfillment bucks. Deciding to exhibit in an art festival can be overwhelming. It's a lot of work, no doubt about that, and you're unlikely to turn a profit the first few shows. But I continue to want to do art festivals because they are so rewarding.
In this video I'll take you along as I plan and prep for my next art festival. From making the photographic prints to attending orientation to manning my booth on the day of, it's all here. The art festival you see in this video is the annual Newport Beach Art in the Park held in Newport Beach, California. It's a one-day show that I have participated in once before. This year wasn't quite as successful as my previous experience, but hey, I still had a great time.
Thanks for watching!

I hate ads. And I'd like to remove them from all my videos. If you too would like that to happen, please consider making a small contribution at nickcarverphoto.com/contribute
If you prefer not to contribute, no problem. I'll continue making videos as often as I can. And from the bottom of my heart, thank you for viewing my channel.
Loved hearing what you said, "feeling pride for what you created, of your work, of your gallery" (and how you don't time to soak it in). That is very inspiring for others!
Having a real show in a good gallery with a real opening was a fantastic experience for me. After the show a bunch of friends met at a restaurant nearby. When I walked in after the show everyone applauded. It was completely unexpected and really nice. Kept me working for a long time thereafter.
The last time I exhibited at an art outdoor art festival a flash windstorm took out almost half the displays in the front of the pavilion... half of my photos were damaged and in broken glass.... the guys from the booths in the back still had work to show and sell, came out to see the carnage .... I swore never to exhibit outside again ... that was the 90’s..... seeing this video reminds me how good it is to get that “spiritual payback” by seeing others happy they saw your images ....
I’m a new subscriber, compliments on a nice looking channel, nice looking work, but most of all, the good things you have learned your willing to share ... thank you !
Oh, man. That would be terrible. I think I might give up festivals after something like that too.
And thank you for the compliments.
Nick Carver posted, therefore today is a good day 😇
Haha - that's what I like to hear. Thank you!
THIS is the main reason I tried an outdoor art fair last spring. Nearly got rained out but was fortunate that the sun came out that morning and thousands showed up. It was great talking with people and hearing them express themselves about the art on display. Well worth the experience. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Nick Carver, you are Completely, Absolutely and Utterly AWESOME!! Your talent and humour are So Addictive! Every one of your uploads is Pure Class. Your photography just isn't getting the recognition it so richly deserves. Approach more galleries, get a promoter, do whatever it takes my friend, because your work needs to be seen by The Masses and by Critics who can start spreading the word..
I wish you every success in the new year Nick.. May 2019 be the year that grants you the recognition and acclaim that you deserve..
tony neill thank you very much for the kind words! I’m grateful anyone even wants to watch these videos let alone leave comments like this. I will certainly continue pounding the pavement to get my work out there. Happy New Year to you!
Been there and done that! Used to sell enough work to cover my expenses and buy some new equipment. Now photography isn't selling for anyone at our shows and I've ended up with a storage problem for work that I really like. I can't pay my bills with compliments. If I could I'd be rich. Now I'm only posting my images on social media. I still get great compliments minus the expense, work and storage problem. Damn a bunch of cell phones.
greatest photography channel
P thank you!
Love how down to earth this photography channel is. Thanks for posting man.
Thank you, my friend!
Something I learned from Fred Picker "When you're in a hurry, dress slowly!" I love the fact that always stay so positive. Keep up the good work!
Amen, you hit the sweet spot Nick. Good vibes and good tips. I too walk away from my final edit, get those fresh eyes, it's good when a habit is reinforced by a teacher. And the printing, the printing! It's the end game and however that's achieved it makes it all the worth while. Even a load of bonusprints through the post, just get a print. Worth spending what you can once you've found the ones you love though, see that majesty!
Catmonkey I’m just glad to know I’m not the only one whose eyes play tricks on him.
@@nickcarverphoto it's a reminder the eye and the brain are the final tools in all these processes. They work differently at times, watching your videos and applying the knowledge you impart got me to thinking that.
You are one of the best photography channels on RUclips, perhaps the best. I love the art centred and photo centred content that is removed to a perfect degree from photography equipment. Obviously your photography is amazing too, the day I finish university and can afford one of your prints, it will be on my wall.
Another Nick Carver Telling It Like It Is moment. Always valuable when I visit your posts.
Jay Tolbert glad to hear that. Thank you sir!
Yours is the most enjoyable and authentic photography channel on Y/tube. 'Spiritual currency' is so much what drives you, and attracts us. Keep going man!
I'm a little late to this video but I need to tell you that I really love the scenes you capture. Most people would not even think of photographing a laundromat or liquor store or old decrepit gas station. This is the reason I love your work, it is different and out side of the box. By the way, your idea with the polaroids was genius. I'm a new photographer and your works of art inspire me. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words!
Thanks a lot for that, Nick. It encourages me to make more effort to show my images, one way or another, so you can count me as another reason to be proud of your work. Of course, you might think that, since I live in England, where rain is the normal order of the day, I'd still get discouraged. But no. General attitude is: a steady rain? So what. Need a brollie? Never.
I clicked this vid so fast! Glad to see more content Nick!
Thank you!!
Same. Even went for a bathroom break first so I was fully confortable.
Colin Green haha! That’s awesome
@@balancedaudio LMAO!
Your work is still amazing and inspirational. I live in the UK so no cool looking buildings in the desert to photograph.
Good video Nick. I participated at my first art show recently so I can totally relate to your idea of "fulfillment bucks". I was fortunate to sell a few pieces that day and just break even, but it was the compliments I got from many of the viewers that made it so much fun. It was those comments and conversations that I will remember over the few sales I did during the day. There is nothing better than sharing images and the story behind them with others and see their reaction to them.
Have chimed in to your posts just recently, and after watching many of different stories on photography, your series turned out to me to provide the most benefits: in terms of photography passion, in terms of being proud in what you do, in terms of living your dream, and in terms of not making it for the money. Awesome work Nick, keep that up please, I'm one of your new and very excited followers! Keep me motivated :)
It was a shame it rained. Your art work was beautiful! Perfectly framed and displayed. Especially loved the liquor store piece. :) Keep the videos and photos coming, they are so inspiring.
Kim Murphy thanks Kim! That was one of my favorites too. You got good taste 😂
The festival organisers should have been on the ball and pushed all the exhibitors together. Those prints came out great, Nick, you’ll sell them for sure.
Stephen Lloyd yeah I was feeling the same way. Would have been nice to move towards some of the action.
😱 the library 🥰 love it 💞
OMG! You said, “believe you me” in your description. Now that is country hell! Now I love you even more! 🤣🤣
I am from Việt Nam... thank you so much for all your video... I watch your video every day
I’m glad you enjoy them. Thank you!
08:00 yes this is soooo TRUTH !!!! as a creator everyone of us should take time to recognize and realize himself/work.... take time too see whats done and get back to this time... tell stories about it... just dont jump from one project to another project... cuz after a while u will be not so happy.. or proud... of your work ... #justsayin
THX NICK !!! =)
You are bang on the the term “ spiritual currency”. This is what I get from making photos. Love you presentations.
“Feeds your soul”, I call it a blessing. Love your videos!
I love your attitude Nick! Sometimes you win, and sometimes you don't. "Spiritual currency ," yeah! Best to you! 😘
Cinnamon Girl thank you very much! 👍🏼 Happy New Year to you!
LOL on the SX70 sound EFX. BTW I really liked what you said about "Spiritual Currency".
UFO Bob it would turn heads. I think I need to start a kickstarter for it. Haha
You are great Nick your work and process its an example to follow!!
Well I’m glad to hear you had that moment. Your work is very interesting. I admit I was a little dubious at first of the donut shop kind of images. But they really really come alive at the large scale.
To me photography is about capturing a moment that reveals an inner and sometimes timeless world inside of things that is not actually visible but can be felt or perceived. I think your distant vistas of hills and the night building shots really have that.
I think your work is especially admirable in that it is one thing to take magnificent photographs in Iceland or in Norwegian fjords, but it’s a whole other thing to make the same kind of riveting image of a donut shop. So, wow and bravo!
Absolutely love your work mate!
Keep it up and I'm happy to hear you looking at the positives out of a not so great day!
Proud of ya!
Thank you very much, my friend!
Very humbling. New to photography and always looking for new technical advice. But you gave me something else. You opened up the door to be more humble and look forward, not backward. To persevere and be positive. I thank you sir. Also, love the Polaroid idea.
Cheers.
I've started sending my own subscribers to your channel Nick because there's always something meaningful to take away from a Nick Carver video - and this one is no different 👍
You have one of the very best photography channels on RUclips Nick - I love it 😍👏
Andy Astbury that’s very kind of you to say. Thank you and thank you for sending folks to my channel!
Niko .. love the way you took the mind disappointed that you didnt have plans for it ... cause others got they ego so high dont like or want to talk about it .. and watching all the 11:04 min clip of yours its just so nice and at the end it touches how your personality really is .... :) .. Im super proud of ya .....
and NIKOOOO dont disappear this long mr
Great message!! You are so right it’s not always just about money. I look at every show for who will I meet rather then what will I sell. Don’t get me wrong I am still grinding to make a living but you can’t force sales.
Definitely - always gotta pursue a profit with hard work. But some things are worth doing regardless of the expense. Thanks for watching.
So happy to see the new content posted today. Sad however, to see how beautiful it is down there. You see... we just had 20cm of snow in the last 48 hours, but I digress... 100% agree with you on the spiritual currency. Selling art is a fickle thing, but one thing about it is certain: If you don't put yourself out there, ZERO people are going to come looking for you. The time investment will always pay off in the long run my friend. Keep up the great work!
Wade Poitras thank you sir! And I hear you on the weather. I’ve been lucky enough to travel a bit to higher latitudes this winter and the more places I visit, the more I realize how uniquely beautiful the weather is here. But I suppose we pay for it in traffic and cost of living. Thank you for the kind words!
Excellent video and thoroughly personal and courageous as always .
Thanks for that Nick. Always nice to find something positive to take away.
ZipInKent thanks for watching 👍🏼
Teaching is my favourite bit of photography and when I saw one of my students images as a competition winner in a waiting room magazine I was chuffed to bits. Passing on your knowledge is a great way to build that spiritual currency (great phrase btw!) and can offset the physical currency cost of (printing) mistakes at times. Great video as usual Nick and a positive message to other photographers out there - be they film or digital. All the best for 2019!
Harlequin565 I hear you on that. I don’t think I’ll ever give up teaching for that very reason. Thanks for watching! Wishing you a great 2019!
Yes! A new one. This video is spiritual currency! Great work!
Patsesson thank you! 👍🏼
You‘re speaking right from my heart. A friend of mine and artist for years invited me quite surpringly to show some of my images next to his work for a few hours during a small art festival. So I ‚recycled‘ some prints from another small exhibition and hung them. I learned a lot and the reactions to my images (mostly streetscenes which is kind of difficult in Germany) were so encouraging and there were some great conversations about photography and the analogue process... I love to get into more of this public showing thing. I hope there will be more chances for that in next year.
Wish you always good light and all the best in the New Year 🎆🎇
Michael Zieschang yeah you’re right about the conversations about photography and analogue that you get to have at these shows. It seems there are a lot of nice, interested people at these festivals that are eager to talk about a shared love for photography. Always worthwhile. Thanks for watching!
I was on the fence about printing some of my own polaroid scans, but seeing yours sold me on it. Also just realized we shot the same spot on Route 66! Great stuff, Nick!
just had the same feeling two weeks ago! photography festival with not much of a crowd and no sale at all. felt down for a bit but then you said: exchange spiritual currency! thanks a lot that was a lift
Madhawy Z I understand feeling down about it. It would be difficult not to feel that way. Glad I could help shine some light on the upside. 👍🏼
I like the idea of showing "affordable" artwork too. I would continue to add those "polaroid" peices to your show.
If you sell one, the customer might visit your website in the future to fill a wall in their house, OR visiting friends will see your work . You now have someone showing your work for free.
Greetings from Oklahoma. Great video. Your experience reminds me of what me and a few friends always say, some days are diamonds, some days are stone. Just have to keep rolling.
Love the videos Nick👍 Also really dig the triptych Polaroid sets! Thanks for the great content.
Jarrett Steil thank you sir!
Your all episodes are so inspiring Nick! Thank you for that
Jakob Olszewski thank you for watching!
Well said, Nick. As an amateur who has never exhibited all I can ever hope for is spiritual currency. Usually, just my own.
Bruce Rawlinson there are many ways to find that spiritual currency. Took me awhile to realize what does it for me.
Those pictures look awesome printed big and on display, really nice work.
Prints look great 👍
S Baines thanks!
May the next festival be as dry as your wit. Thanks for another great video and for sharing the awesome, positive perspective gained from this experience.
Cheers, brother!
Jason S. I think I might have to go to the Sahara desert to get that dry. Thanks for watching, my friend!
No experience is ever wasted Nick, you will always learn something that will be of benefit in the future....happy holidays and have a great 2019
Outdoor shows are always something of a gamble - sorry to hear about the low turnout. But still, the experience and people you meet have real value. I hope having your camera setup prompted people to ask about it - it's a good conversation starter and a way to bring them into the booth. I think I mentioned this once, but when someone buys a photograph (any size) - have someone take your picture with them and get their email to send it to them. Then keep it to keep them informed on what you're doing. Great way to build a collector base! And I promise, just one other thing -- you do such great videos - if you can run them on a large monitor inside your booth it will catch people's eyes as they walk by and get them to stop in! Best wishes for art festival success. Keep the videos coming!!!
Gary Jones Fine Art Photography those are really great ideas. I think you’re right about having a screen there showing the videos 🤔 thank you for the tips!
Great video and positive attitude. Getting your work out there as much as possible is so important to the success of an artist. Feedback, recognition, a sense of accomplishment and hopefully (but not always) a few sales, are what it's all about. Keep it up brother.
Thanks for sharing Nick. I wish you a happy new year with a lot of fun and pictures. As read once, if you are happy you are successful.
In the hopes that I can persuade you, it would be awesome to see more videos of on-location shoots from you (ideally landscapes and architectural shots). Seeing you work through your process and show the finished product never gets old.
Hi Nick...just found your channel. I like your style...super fun!
Thank you!
All your photos looked awesome together. Really dig the videos man.
Bryan Corbin thanks man! I appreciate the support.
LOVE the video, so good. Your a fantastic photographer. I have just started back shooting film, your work is an inspiration. Your message for this video is spot on I can super relate to this SPIRITUAL currency idea. Keep up the great work, always a pleasure to watch your vids
I really appreciate the kind words, thank you.
Class as always Nick, I've been in similar situations and I totally understand that brief moment of 'pride', it's a very fulfilling feeling...
That Polaroid impression is hilarious! ❤️
Lot's of spiritual currency to you! Thanks for the video.
Michael Vail thanks for watching!
Good stuff Nick! The weather was certainly not a win but you found victory nonetheless!
Juan Patricio thank you! And thanks for braving the rain to come see the booth.
Late to comment, so long after the fact. But your work is inspiring to millions. Think of that.
Great video, definitely a life lesson about take a step back an enjoy what you have and done 👍🏻 looking forward to the new year with more videos nick, happy new year
RyanD thank you sir! Happy new year to you too
Just think how happy you'll be at the next festival, when there's sun and lots of people!
Timothy Roper yeah seriously
I was impressed by your gallery. You had some very large pieces which contrasted with the smaller pieces. I have been thinking of selling art photography at art festivals, but was thinking that I needed a large inventory of prints in various sizes. I see what you have at the show, you said many people were impressed by your photography so I guess you don't always need a large inventory of prints.
Forget the greens! Your customers will never notice! I bought my own large format printer and loved having it.
I absolutely Love those polaroid prints!!
noah buchholz thank you
Nice video! Glad to see it before new year!
Thank you!
Hey Nick - great post as always! Thanks for replying to my email a few weeks back. Always great to see quality content from a down-to-earth RUclips personality, rather than some of these other photographers...
I'd be interested to see your calibration process regarding monitors and prints - not sure if that's enough to cover in a whole video, but still interested!
Thanks, Mike! That's a good idea for a video.
You should feel proud your work is outstanding. I loved the Polaroids . Oh pity the festival wasn't here in Wales uk , it's always raining and wouldn't affect the footfall at all
David Pearce thank you! I sure wouldn’t mind doing this in Wales. Southern Californians can’t handle drizzle.
Sure your photos are good! I like the style also.
Thanks!
Just thinking maybe do a video before the festival so your RUclips audience can show up. I really love the TONS IQ shot, I'm always on the lookout for scenes like that. Great work.
photo mat that’s a good idea.
Another great video Nick! Really making me think about upping my printing game
Nick, if I could subscribe again just so you had another subscriber I would man. I'm confident I'll be shelling out for your course once it's available. I'm not a film shooter, but I think I can still get some valuable info out of it - plus, I'm really hoping you cover printing and installation.
Thanks a lot man. I really appreciate it. The course is about 2/3 complete. I can't wait to get it out there.
Aww 🥰 🤗 proud sir!
That’s y I love my canon pro 4000 print all day long love your videos
Randall Mitchell photography no greater satisfaction in my opinion 👍🏼
I do understand I love having my work printed anyway possible 👍🏾
I have a quick question where did you get your stickers from that you put on the back of your prints that you signed is that something you made or ordered thanks
@@Weeeee75 I make those myself and print them on full-sheet adhesive paper.
Would love to see a vid about how you created the Polaroid prints, they look super cool
I was feeling the same, til i print a 6x17 pano of a purplepink sunset, and everyday i look at it, and say... Thats good, feels good, so i decided to go this year on a journey of print large, like 8x22inch panos and sell them, and keep growing as a photographer.
Also feel the same (beginning of the video) when i was printing in a regular store, some Pics and realized that i was not getting what im seeing... So, damn, bad...
Thanks for great content!
Best wishes for this new year!
That intro was great!
Informative and inspiring as always ! Thanks man, keep it up.
bende fü thanks for watching my friend
You are a funny guy, Nick! 😂 Still love the print of the single store at sunset 👌
Ben Vanden Eynde 2x thank you sir
Love your content! Thanks for sharing. 👍
Thomas thanks for watching!
Wow, great work!
dont worry nick.. i am proud of you. thank goodness i found ur channel.
Really interesting video. I got a lot out of it. Thanks!
This vid was great!
Ive definitely stepped back from being a content churning machine and am trying to think more of.. why Im making what Im making, and what impact it would have on others if any.
Im going to watch this a few more times to really let your words sink in some more!
Jim Tollefson it’s good to do that. I’m terrible at taking time to step back and think about those kinds of things. Thanks for watching!
Great story, Nick. I enjoyed the “green dilemma” segment at the beginning, and the spiritual currency at the end, and in the middle the flowing directing of our eyes to your name tag at the orientation! Happy New Year!
This clip was some sorta special currency for me, as usual. Thanks
Mmmm, this is refreshing. Thanks for the excellent video Nick.
As good as your photography is Nick, your video making talent is really exceptional.
Double thank you!
@@nickcarverphoto And I should add that your work and your journey to the final image serves as a serious inspiration, and how to experience for me. And others I'm sure.
I like your attention for the details, also for the artwork info cards, nice and clean design. And, thanks to the art festival, you could also test new products like the big polaroid and have some feedback. I like also to try new products for art shows and to have a positive feedback is really a good food for the soul, like you say.
Happy new year and thanks for the great content of 2018.
I was in SoCal a few years ago when a small rain shower started. You would think it was armageddon. People where running for their cars & cover like they where about to melt. Its too bad a little weather ended up ruining your exhibit. At least your a good sport.
Great vid. Thanks Nick.
Hi Nick, thank you for this great video, it was so motivating! Thank you for sharing.
Your first festival video was a big help in getting me prepared for my first season of shows last year. If you think rain is bad...try hail :)
Aw dude. Hail. That's terrible.
Great content as always!
Leffe49 thank you! 👍🏼
