Take heed, RUclipsrs looking to learn how to install these things (which are really great, BTW): There is literally *not one single piece* of the roof part of this job that is done even remotely correctly. Velux specifies a silicone sealant, they used polyurethane. Velux specifies metal roofing fasteners with rubber washers for all exposed penetrations, they used normal sheet metal screws. Velux specifies double-stick tape around the boot, they used nothing under the boot. Velux specifies cutting the standing seam from two inches below the lower side up to the top edge of the boot, to prevent ponding, they stuck it up tight. Velux specifies additional metal flashing added to protect boot after installation, none here. And on and on and on. For crying out loud, they not only cut the hole without safety glasses, but then smeared the gooped-on NP-1 over freshly-cut jagged metal without so much as a glove on. Look elsewhere for wisdom.

Velux has always been a very innovative skylight and roof products company. These new sun tunnel setups are no different. What a great way to get natural light into an area that would otherwise have to remain dark or dull with very limited light.

    Hi Kastnmagic
You can install a VELUX Sun Tunnel prior to a new metal roof going on. I feel its actually better if you have the option. This certified installer is simply adding a VELUX Sun Tunnel to an existing metal roof and showing how easy it can be for those who might be considering adding some daylight to their home.

I ended up on here whilst seeking information on the proper way to install a Velux solar tube on a pre-existing metal roof. What I found was 30 or so “experts” slamming the poster for faulty workmanship, but not one of them so much as offered a better solution or the correct way. RUclips, the new Facebook!

Skylight base should be center with the rib panel instead of putting it against the rib,it will trap water and will rust metal panel

What a mess! The guy butchered a nice steel roof, and created a guaranteed future leak. No amount of caulking will last long, whereas proper double overlapped steel roof layers will last the life of the roof. As for the external finish-appalling!

NP1 should have went all the way around the bottom and covered the upper top half of the flashing. It then being out of the sun, sight and weather. Cutting the roof was not the way to get things done at the bottom of the flashing.

Genial!

    • @davidparker9676

Never rely on any caulking or sealant. You need to make the roof naturally shed water with flashing. Caulk is just a backup defense that shouldn't be in direct sunlight.
