Because there were some alien creatures in there. I decided to make a wikipedia like article for an alternative history battle of verdun (For PC viewers. It will look bad on mobile) Battle of Verdun Battle of Verdun Part of the Western Front in the First Martian War *insert image of verdun here* Date February 21, 1916 - 18 December 1916 (9 months, 3 weeks and 6 days) Location Région Fortifiée de Verdun (RFV) Verdun-sur-Meuse, France 49°12′29″N 5°25′19″E Result Decisive European Coalition Strategic Victory Belligerents European Coalition Martians Commanders and Leaders All European Generals that are alive The Higher Being Strength 10,000,000+ Soldiers 150,000,000-200,000,000+ giant arachnid 750,000+ Machine gun trenches type species 75,000+ Artillery Guns 30,000+ bombers Casualties and losses Heavy Almost totally annihilated The Battle of Verdun was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front in France. This battle was the longest and deadliest in the First Martian War of 1914-1922 and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse. The Martian Army attacked the defences of the Fortified Region of Verdun. During the First Battle of Gdansk, The Martian Army first realized the threat that Artillery had on their forces. So the Martian Army decided to make a tactic called counter battery, or the tactic to neutralize the artillery of the Enemy forces whilst you keep the enemy infantry force busy with your main infantry force. This worked in many battles like the Second Battle of Gdansk, First Battle of Warsaw, First Battle of Berlin and First Battle of Vienna. Although some historians may claim that it was stupid that they didn't just assign more men to guard the artillery. True historians knew that if they assigned more men to guard the artillery it would only make the Martian Army strengthen their main force and make a breakthrough through the human infantry. There was almost no way to stop the advance of the Martian army until the Battle of Verdun. The Generals knew that they were going to lose unless a miracle happened. So what did they do, they made a totally idiotic play. They put 55% of their artillery on their most defensive province of Verdun. Once this was known by the Martian Army they sent according to some historians up to 40% of their entire army to Verdun to destroy the Artillery and destroy the last 2 countries that haven't surrendered in Mainland Europe. France and Russia. With the play of putting more than half of their artillery in Verdun they had hoped that maybe the region could somehow defend the artillery. The Generals knew that losing the war was just a matter of time. They needed a miracle to save them. So they made a bet. A bet that would seal the fate of Europe and maybe humanity itself. And it succeeded. Verdun held against all odds. Although quite a bit of the Army that was originally stationed at Verdun were killed. They had killed almost the entire enemy force. After the success of nulling the counter battery tactic at Verdun. In the Spring of 1917 The European Counteroffensive began. For why I made this? I dont know. How long it took? Easily 4 hours.
