Our National Health Service negotiated a discount with the drug manufacturer and authorised its use when it became "cost effective" to do so. Because we were worth it to keep alive. The NHS is paid for according to people's ability to pay and used according to people's need. Gosh, that's Marxist. Small wonder the Conservative Government tried so hard to privatise the system (huge proifts to be made by private businesses) and stop building new hospitals to meet the needs of a growing, ageing population.

They won’t though. They will just stop there. Ana has seen this game played. They will never add another drug to the list. And the prices will only rise. Pharma runs the government.
No, she just won't settle for a little.
She knows better, she has seen better and she won't settle for less.
Anyone who has traveled or lived abroad knows if these American companies are selling their drugs outside the U.S. for a few dollars if not for a few cents meanwhile they price gauge and rob us blind while selling the same drugs here in the U.S. all thanks to the useless PBM middle man whose entire goal is to squeeze as much money as possible based on insurance and zip code among other things.
So yes Ana won't quit and neither will I.
Speaking as a European she is absolutely right to be critical here. That American citizens allow this situation to exist is absolutely mind blowing to me. She seems remarkably restrained I think.
She's become unbearably cynical. Not saying as a country we shouldn't be doing way more, but alone Biden can only do so much. Take a win when you get it.
@@seancaselli. Agreed.
I was happy just to see those words 'we beat big pharma" come out of his mouth because I finally realized that is what he meant when he said, "We beat Medicare."
Same! 😂
Im Australia we pay 7.60 for all pensioners . All the other people pay around 30 dollar for most drugs. Those companies in America are putting there profits before the Americans lives.
I was on Imbruvica for 4 years. Luckily I live in the UK so I paid my taxes (at the low rate) and the drug treatment cost me nothing extra.
Thanks to Bernie, who pushed for far more.
Why just seniors? Why can't they get it for everyone? Seniors aren't the only people strapped for cash.
I live with Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis. This type of arthritis can be absolutely devastating and painful beyond your wildest dreams. I was going to school and working when this condition hit me hard. I became completely disabled and bedridden since the arthritis was excruciating and all over my body. I spent years in recovery. Enbrel is used to treat this condition and it absolutely changes lives. Exploiting people with this condition is beyond disgusting and ruins their lives during an incredibly vulnerable time. This country is disgusting
@@fuckyougeorgebush I bet you have just the right dietary plan or supplement for the job, right? For a low low cost even. You are partially right, though. I'll give you that.
Now, when you say "using drugs", do you mean like takin' down an 8 ball while losing a late night poker game or medication prescribed by a doctor that is covered under my government issued insurance? Either way, I'm pretty sure both of those are gonna work faster in some ways than what I think you're getting at. Come big fella, how much for your fix? Or do you need us to fill out questionnaires and at the end all you'll need for the answer is a whole bunch of financial info??
Even if Medicare covers it, what an enormous waste of our collectively pooled money in taxes. Think of how many more could be covered if Medicare wasn’t being charged at this astronomical rate.
Seems like the US should nationalize the pharmaceutical industries.
I am a pharmacist in Barbados i own my pharmacy
we have a co-payment drug health plan where the government pays for the cost patients pay the "mark up".
Jardiance is on the plan and cost just over $20 bds ($10 usd) to patients
Junivia is not on the programme and this cost patients $105 bds ($52.50usd) monthly !
Both drugs we use branded products only!
FYI Stelara is also used for Crohn's Disease which is one of those things that if you don't get your medicine you can develop insane and potentially lethal conditions.
Thank you for speaking about this.
Correct me if I'm wrong but was it not Republican policy.
That Medicare should be able to negotiate the price of medication. Also being able to get it from a foreign source to help bring down cost.
The Democrats plan is always price control.
I’m Australian, my partner takes Embrel. He pays about $150, so Americans are definitely being screwed.
He DID have to try all the other treatments but Embrel has been a life changer for him.
I’m leaving this comment so your audience realises how different it is in other countries (for decades).
Don't forget that taxpayer dollars were used developing some of these drugs.

Who cares what the discount is if it's still too expensive for anyone to afford?
People who can afford it now?
Funding from the National Institutes of Health, totaling $187 billion, contributed to research and development of 354 of 356 drugs (99.4%) approved from 2010 to 2019.
In other words, we the public properly have an ownership stake and our elected board of directors (Congress and President) a fiduciary responsibility to ensure this pays US dividends.
10 drugs? What a joke. Pathetic.

Do you know how many lives this will change? Of course with all the power dems have its pathetic. But gosh, it's something. Vs nothing. This is why people hate liberals, always pessimistic never satisfied
@@ljeans531have Republicans delivers anything similar? When Trump was in the White House, what did he do to make healthcare or your medicine more affordable?
In Australia, Enbrel costs ( Australian dollars )
Private purchase - $780
On government prescription - $30:60 ( anyone )
If on government assistance benefits and prescription - $7
Perspective
I just looked up the same information. Amazing how a country of 30 million can negotiate better drug prices than a country of 300 million. American healthcare is crazy stupidly set up.
FYI Americans, the $30.60 is for every Australian and New Zealand citizen and every permanent resident as we all get medicare cards, including children on parent cards. Also, if the person spends over $2200 per year on all prescription medications, it's free for the rest of the year.
@@TaniaShipmanI get sent a bowel cancer screening test every 2 years in the mail - as does everyone over a certain age. Free, of course.

Was gonna make a joke, too, but didn't wanna be super insensitive. To be clear, I'm he!!a neuro-divergent in a different way too and agree that this should be part of the discussion. I'd definitely like my meds to not cost as much or anything at all. It must be too much to ask that we wanna think and act "normal" also. Not quite a smart move to make so we can't take the necessary meds to not lash out in different ways if we want to have a better functioning society, in my humble opinion.
So tragic but so true, it is a broken system and an embarrassment. Other first world countries laugh at our mess.
Good Grief! We in Australia would never have to pay what these discounted prices are! Shocking!
They do take a lot of money to develop, but most of that money is provided by the government as grants and subsidies...so it isn't even those funds being provided by the company. This is comparable to Walmart subsidizing their employees with SNAP and welfare.
How many of those drugs had patents that were already set to expire in the next few years?
For some reason, people continuously 'overlook' this detail... also the fact that there will literally be 'NO CHANGE' until 'halfway through the next term'... and guess what? 'Something will change'...
Eliquis is on the list and is hideously expensive. It went off patent worldwide in 2020 which allowed generics, except for the USA who extended it until 2025. It will be open in the USA for generics in 2026. The price will drop without Biden-Harris claiming victory for it. Are we being duped again? If Medicare cannot negotiate prices, just buy the drugs in Canada, UK, Germany, or wherever they are cheaper and send them here. No negotiation needed. Let big pharma cry.
I had no idea of the extreme costs! So glad I moved back home to Canada

All veterans with diabetes should be getting their meds through the VA. I pay about 1/10 of that listed price (197.00) for Jardiance. Apparently the VA is allowed to negotiate prices.
10 medications? Great but some may want to tell biden their are thousands of medications.
You’re right but These are probably 10 of the 15 or so most commonly used drugs.
Im not giving them credit for anything until its for everyone, not just senior's, cause they are not the only ones getting price gouged

This is a win, no other way to look at it. Thank you Harris and Biden!
Harris needs to campaign on this and promise to keep cutting prescription drug costs.
In Canada, if a new drug is developed, the developer gets exclusive rights for 2 years. Then it's fair game.

Lower than the USA most of the rich countries are.
As stated below, there are prescription charges, though lifetime conditions are often exempt (as happens with me). Despite the wrecking ball of the last 14 years here, the adults are in charge again, though returning the NHS to the 2010 levels of performance, satisfaction, waiting times will be formidable.
However, when you have an organization as large as the NHS they have great negotiating power, it’s a huge market for pharma companies and many attribute this to the UK unlike too many other industries, maintaining a strong pharma industry and research base.
One issue though that I have noticed, some limited media reporting due to who owns newspapers here, we also did as a country something stupid in 2016, as warned Brexit has affected some medical supply chains and been disruptive as a lot of pharma projects with high research and development are done in more than one country.
