Malaki po talaga ang sakop ng Good Earth bldg noon except sa may dulo which was a bank (Philtrust?) and was a Shoe Lane store adjacent sa old Plaza Fair. At pagtawid mo ng kalsada(Ronquillo St.) was the original Washington Watch Store na ngayon nasa high end malls na.

I am reminded of my own sojourn in Avenida Rizal sa video mong ito. Nagtapos ako sa UE-Recto noong 1981. After my graduation, I was fortunate enough to land a good paying job sa Saudi Arabia where I spent the next 3 decades. When I came back home in 2019, nagligid akong muli sa Maynila at saw for myself the transformation from then to now. Sa totoo lang, mas maayos noon at mas malinis ang Maynila kaysa ngayon, and thanks to Mayor Isko Moreno he tried to clean Manila and under his administration though not completely done, he made effort to restore the grandeur of old Manila. Like the song goes.. Manila Manila...I keep coming back to Manila...

Thank you for another walk down memory lane. My dad used to have a sweepstakes stall at GARCIA BUILDING right across the old Universal Theater. That building was historic as well because it used to house old movie productions like the late Ramon Revilla Sr's Imus Productions, Four N Films, GPS Productions and many more. Fond memories of Good Earth where we would do grocery at its basement, then buy toys at its huge Toys Department at the 4th floor and of course, have fun at its unique amusement park where it had a Ferris Wheel at the rooftop of the Good Earth building. Sigh! Those were the days.

I was 26 y/o when I first came to Manila in 1988. I had my short vacation here coming from Cebu City. I remembered the first place I visited was Avenida Rizal. I dropped by at Ronquillo Street bcuz I had three male cousins there working as key duplicators and stamp pad makers. I could say that the place was sooo busy. Businesses were so alive. There was heavy traffic and people shopped to different stores. Me and my other companion just walked towards Luneta Park. Now, seeing Avenida at present, matamlay ang negosyo. In fact maraming tindahan ang sarado na. It's different from it was before. I'm just happy na nka punta ako d2. At least, I have an idea what is Avenida looks like now as compared before. Nakakalungkot!

Thank you for sharing this to us. Young people just don't understand the Historical Significance of your videos.
The places that your videos are focusing on places that were very important to some people, to me.
Good Earth was the place where my family and I enjoy the weekend shopping and just having a good time. Another place was the COD Department Store in Cubao.
I remember buying my first Legos in Good Earth. I buy my toys from Long Life Bazaar in Carriedo. My Father bought my original Voltes V Toy in a stall inside the old Quinta Market.
While watching your video, it made me remember that there was an Alemars Book Store somewhere in that vicinity.
Avenida, Escolta and Rizal were such classy streets when I was young. But now, their Prestige is already lost in time.

It is still fresh in my mind the Ever Gotesco was my place of adventure during sundays. Malinis pa noon ang Rizal ave, aka Avenida rizal. The MRT 1 was started in 1983 i think. Magandang isipin na mayroon tayong mga ganito ka ganda na building at simple sa mga nkalipas na panahon.

Vern, thank you for producing this video. As I remember walking in this place, beginning from the corner of Bustos Street and Rizal Avenue the buildings are Good Earth Emporium, next is ideal theater and SHOE WORLD (now Philtrust). SHOE WORLD has a nice large glass display window and upscale modern design men and women shoes on display. I remember that was in early 1970's. As a kid back then, I love standing beside the rotating conveyor candy bucket where you can pick different candy flavors, put them in a plastic bag and hand it over to the sales lady to weigh in and pay. Nice di ba!
Good earth emporium is a wonderland for the kids back then. They have apparels, small grocery and shoes. At the 4th floor I remember is where the high end import toys ( battery operated toys) are on display. There was a small cafeteria called "G.E.E. luncheonette" where I first tasted the "Club Sandwich'. That sandwich was a treat back then..never heard of French fries before.. At the 5th floor is the amusement floor, they have the early coin operated video games, pinball, carousel and other small rides.
Adding some trivia, at bustos street there was 2 entrance to Good Earth. A bigger sliding door for customers and the other is for employees and delivery receiving area. Eto pa, the building across the Bustos entrance are 2 busy restaurants: La Perla and automat restaurant or maybe flaming Hot. I remember my aunt took us (siblings and cousins) to La Perla and had chicken mami..😀
Finally, Along Rizal Avenue heading to CM Recto, goodwill bookstore is next to national bookstore. Besides goodwill bookstore has a small restaurant called goodwill luncheonette and was known for the delicious hamburger. My mom used to treat us a burger and a bottle of Miranda grape soda.
Thanks again for the video and wishing you the best.

But, going back, from Ideal, we have Good Earth where Mc Donalds is now, corner of Bustos st., where you find Besa's shoe store and repair, next to it is La Perla Restaurant and directly across is Crispa Dept. Store. On the same side is the side entrance to Good Earth. I remember Good Earth gave free 7Up drinks to everybody going inside, customer or non-customer. Continue walking and you reach Universal Theater, next to it is Dalisay Theater where Tagalog movies are shown, then close to Recto is Avenue theater, then Alemar's Book Store. Across the street, State theater which is Emerald Circle now. and next to it is Ever theater. Continue walking on that side and we reach Fairmont Ice Cream. Those were the days. Memories only now. Daming pontential ng Quiapo (Avenida) to be an ideal tourist destination (like night markets of Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho chi minh, Seoul) ❤️. Kaso bad management and governance naghihinder sa progress, mas lalo na sa bansa naten 😭. Hope to see na magkatotoo tong pangarap ko.

    Hi Ka You Tube.
I was born in P Campa Sampaloc Manila 1953 and i saw the grandeur of the city of Manila.
In Rizal Ave., Me and my dad used to see movies here, and it was so clean and nice.
I suggest, try to research Bungalow restaurant in San Marcelino.
You need to talk to some old folks that was living in Manila.
    Thanks

I'd be curious to see how the area looks like now since most of the pandemic restrictions have been lifted? Is it as clean and nice with no illegal vendors coming back and cars, jeeps, tricycles parked illegally? You should make a series of videos revisiting all the places you covered back when you were filming and following the clearing operations team a couple of years ago. Something to think about, Fern.
