The thing that I like about these old shows is that the stars in the show look just like regular people. Everyone doesn't have a full set of hair, not everyone is skinny. They look like real people that you see everyday. That's kind of nice as compared to the phonies that are on shows today.
This was so funny, and the writing was brilliant! Thanks for the good memories by posting this show. Btw, I hate to sound like an old fuddy duddy, but they don't make shows like this these days. That is a shame!
Love going back in time with Car 54. I was only 7 when Car 54 was first broadcast, and I loved the "funny policemen", especially Toody, Muldoon and Schnauser. Now I'm enjoying the series with an older person's appreciation of the comic writing and acting. BTW - I lived close to NYC. I so miss the way life was back then.
I've literally just finished watching The Biggest Day of the Year, don't remember seeing it before even though I've had the DVDs for years. It seemed a bit too silly at first but I'm glad I stuck with it, pure genius! Came quickly after another classic Here We Go Again.
@@harrison6143I hear you. You know, nobody I talk to about this show has ever seen it. I can't figure out why. As a painter, I recreated the painting "manhattan from the lower east side at sunset" from one of my favorite episodes. I sell the prints of it and I find out the true car 54 fans.
Gunther: "Some friends. I bet they commit crimes without even telling us." This reminds me of the episode "Toody and Muldoon Crack Down" when Gunther said, "You do people favors and look what happens. They violate the law and they don't even tell us about it."
I like that they show fans able to just walk up and buy World Series tickets the day of the game, with no line. Also, no madhouse crowds with drunken jackanapes hooting and hollering causing trouble. Just nice respectable pickpockets!
tomitstube You totally get it!! This was some of the best situation comedy material ever written. Hopefully you've seen several of the other episodes ("Beast of the Bronx" and "The Big Night" are two of the top ones). Tx for the comment.
I'm guessing that you know that Car 54 doesn't use a laugh track. The laughs you hear are genuine and were captured during a live viewing where the audience sounds are captured and mixed prior to the final cut. That is why the laughs are unique and different during each episode.
@@WidenerLaw2007wow! No I did not know that, thank you. So it was filmed and then played in front of a live studio audience? And do you know if Sergeant Bilko, (The Phil Silvers Show) was done in the same manner? And I'm assuming that Bilko was before car 54. On this episode of 54 when they lined up for roll call I just flashed to bilco. Sorry for the misspellings but I'm using voice to text so that this doesn't take all day. I'm so thrilled that I got this whole series to look forward to. Thank you for edifying me and I really miss Gilbert. I have a ton of his shows to look forward to, but we could have had another 20 years or more. I don't like what they did to him
Depending on the year this episode aired, the Yankees were either playing the Cincinnati Reds ('61), the SF GIants ('62) or the LA Dodgers ('63) in the World Series. They won the '61 and '62 Series but lost the '63 Series.
Tx - My tops one are "The Big Day" and the episode where the family thinks Muldoon is a gangster and the one where Goody goes undercover with gangsters and also the one where Toodys nephew is helping Toodys and Muldoon crack cases.:-)

This was not the first (I believe the Swordfish episode was first). There are *many* great episodes and I encourage anyone that is interested to purchase the 2-season complete DVD set. This was published at a time when no DVDs were available (hence the poor quality transfer from VHS tape).
'paktype' mentions below that the 'world series' taking place in this episode is either Yanks vs Cincy 1961, vs San Fran 1962 or vs L.A. 1963. "Car 54...' ran from Autumn 1961 until Spring 1963 (surprisingly only 2 years) so it wasn't the series vs L.A. and the 'Series' is opening at Yankee Stadium and that's 1961- Yanks won in 5

Agree - the writing and situational comedy setup is brilliant - And with no laugh track and actual audience laughs makes it much better than most other shows.
The man counting his money at 06:40 is a dead ringer for JFK's supposed assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. The resemblance is astonishing. Could this possibly be Oswald?
As far as I know he was never an actor. In fact he was a Marine who eventually defected to the USSR, took a wife then came back to the US to live in TX.
Totally agree - His reactions are priceless! You should see his reaction in "The Breast Who Walked The Bronx" when he sees Schnauzer painting with a broken arm.

One of the best sitcoms ever on tv. I've seen this episode before but my eyes still watered from laughing while watching this.
I was born in '74 and and my generation missed out on this kind of comedy. I'm glad it's on RUclips.

Wally Cox, who played the pick-pocket (and Mr. Peepers) was Marlon Brando's close friend.

It is too hard to pick a favorite Car 54 Episode, but this is in my top 5. I watch the entire series once a year for my sanity.

Very enjoyable fun! Down to the last 20 seconds! Still laughing...
Al Lewis as Schnauzer was amazing.
