Nothing like modern jetliners. My mom came to this country in a "Connie". From Athens, Greece to NYC, it made seven stops and took some 36 hours. When my mom travels now to Greece, she says, thank God for modern jets. I fly home is just 8 1/2 hours none stop.
love how the engines roar at takeoff! and how u can feel the torque thumping on your chest as it passes right by! this is something that we miss today! absolutely stunning!
The SWEET sound of radial engines starting up is the sound of a true and sincere "Romance Of The Skies"!! It is such a PASSIONATE and POWERFUL sound that you can't help but thoroughly enjoy every note of it from idling to full throttle!!
My last flight on a TWA to DC was at 26,000' and smooth as butter. Those Constellations were perfect and so was the service from airline and it's crew. Awesome video.
Dad flew on them for 12 years as a EC-121 Radar operator and I got to go through them a few times a year at air shows, I love that big radial sound times 4
The 749 was my favorite, I started out in the 049 they have one at Pima Air Museum in AZ. The 749 had more 'creature comforts' for its passengers longer range and still kept it 'cozy' with around 40 passenger average depending on first class or tourist seating. I loved looking out of those round windows, back then we flew around 20k feet and you could still see a lot, great fun.
I know what you mean, fortunately I came from an airline family TWA, my Dad worked with Jack Frye in St. Louis as a young salesman and quickly moved into management so when I was born I had unlimited free transportation and lost count of how many Connie flights I was on. Started out in the 049 then 749, my favorite. On a night flight over the atlantic I would try to get a window seat just before the wing so I could see those blueish flames shooting out of the Wright 18 cylinder engines, heaven.
As a young boy at age 8, my first flight on a Super Connie was pure delight...yes, what a wonderful, sweet and a superb airplane...wish I could fly one of them now...that was 52 years ago!
I was told by one of the flight engineers years ago that the blue flame meant a perfect mixture for the engines. My Dad had several pilot friends from the airline that would visit him when we lived in Cairo Egypt and also London Eng. And I remember some of the conversations. Most of those guys I flew with were WW11 bomber pilots and used to flying while being shot at, the 'civilian flying' to them was a 'piece of cake'. Had a few rough landings in Gander Newfoundland but never anything bad.
One of my most favorite aircraft! I love the sound of radial engines. I was definitely born in the wrong era - well, not entirely. Jet powered multi-engined aircraft were not in wide supply when I was born. This is such a sexy airplane. Just has the prettiest lines of any aircraft. Thanks for posting this. It's great.
When I was 18 I was invited to fly aboard this very aircraft (N749NL) in Marana, AZ (KAVQ) in September of 2002 as it was being prepared for the transatlantic flight to the Netherlands. I just found the video I made of the experience and will be converting the VHS to digital for use on youtube soon. If it were not for the video I shot, I would not have known what became of this aircraft. Luckily I got a pretty good shot of the tail number. My biggest memory of that day was the sound of those huge radials when they fired up. The emergency exits had been removed and the sound was amazing. I had no idea they sounded the way they did. They had a lope that was unforgettable. They even let me lay in some kind of storage area under the floor just behind the cockpit as they approached Tucson. The storage area was open to the front landing gear where the wheels were stowed about 24 inches in front of me. During the low-pass, the gear was lowered and I had a perspective of Tucson not seen by many. And I got it on video.
I think it was the most beautiful passenger aircraft ever. I remember seeing it in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport taking off back in the 1950s. Later I used to see the in Brussels in the 60s flying under the colours of "Flying Tigers"
Such a BEAUTIFUL and SLEEK airplane!!!! LOVE the POWERFUL ROAR of those old Pratt & Whitney radial engines!!!! MUCH BETTER sounding than a PUNY little, single engined Lycoming powered Cessna!!!
Australia has a few of these flying around...I seen one fly around the coathanger 10 times on the 75th anivercity...very beautiful....saw a B-26 fly roght over me at Coff's Harboy....metallic whin....300 feet over me....
That's awesome, both sight and sound! A new connie is airborne once more, and the last time I've seen one was at the last El Toro Airshow in 1997 when I was 7. This one is one of the earlier variants it seems, due to the lack of a nose radar, but then again, I could be wrong.. Nice post!
My first flight was on a connie, from Lawton, OK (Ft Sill) to Philadelphia, PA (Ft Dix, NJ) in Sep '63. Not being aware at the time that it was normal, I was a bit unnerved when I noticed how far up and down the wingtips were moving.
Howard Hughes solo flew one of the first Constellations ever built (In TWA livery) he had a news cameraman go with him & take footage of him at the controls as well as footage looking out some of the cabin windows, I've seen this, It's pretty cool!!
I was lucky enough to fly on KLM 707's in the late 60's & that was good enough. But to get to fly on a 'Connie', especially a KLM 'Connie' when it was in service, that had to the "Golden era" of aviation!
Eastern Airlines was still using Constellations for commuter/shuttle flights in the late '60s & early '70s, In 1968, An Eastern Constellation collided with an American Airlines 707-120 over New York's JFK Airport, The 707 was only cosmetically damaged, The "Connie" however was totaled.
@cowsrock94, OK, So the plane may be old and not as efficient as the ones being made today, But it looks and sounds great!! It's a living piece of history for everyone to enjoy.
The most beautiful aircraft, it's sure and true. Very interesting and nice video. Listen the noise, the music of the four angines... So you can see another Connie on my channel here on RUclips..
@WerkinMojo That can be true! This Connie came from Arizona where it was restored was enough to get her passed the airworthiness checks and they flew it to Holland. If you ever get to the Netherlands visit the AVIODROME and you can watch a movie about her.
I remember one of these grounded and used as a bar in Malta - quite a few years back now but I remember how spacious it seemed inside - I wonder if it still there or what has happened to it
@ cowsrock .... What's wrong with nostalgia. You must admit it was a beautiful aircraft. Sweeping lines, etc. ... These Acft must be kept flying as a testimony to our children.
A Connie in flight has to be one of the most beautiful sights in all of aviation.
Nothing like modern jetliners. My mom came to this country in a "Connie". From Athens, Greece to NYC, it made seven stops and took some 36 hours. When my mom travels now to Greece, she says, thank God for modern jets. I fly home is just 8 1/2 hours none stop.

absolutely stunning!
yeah :/
So I got choked up watching this. Awesome footage and thanks for cutting the track so we could hear those engines.
Lovely to see (and hear) one again. Thanks for posting this without some naff soundtrack to muffle the radial rumble - very nice!
yeah

What a gorgeous plane! Thanks for posting!
Congratulations as an aviodrome supporting member this is a major achievement !
Dad flew on them for 12 years as a EC-121 Radar operator and I got to go through them a few times a year at air shows, I love that big radial sound times 4

A sculpture with wings! Truly beautiful!
How this sound of a Connie was all about Kansas City Municipal Airport (MKC) in the 1950's, mostly TWA's. Pure romance that jet roar can't match.
Saw and heard one flying over my head today. What a beautiful airplane with a great sound you don't find in modern airplanes anymore!
One of the most beautiful looking and coolest sounding planes ever made. A+
I know what you mean, fortunately I came from an airline family TWA, my Dad worked with Jack Frye in St. Louis as a young salesman and quickly moved into management so when I was born I had unlimited free transportation and lost count of how many Connie flights I was on. Beautiful plane... thanks for posting!
It just "sprung" into the air. Like it wanted to fly. One of the most bueatiful a/c ever built.
As a young boy at age 8, my first flight on a Super Connie was pure delight...yes, what a wonderful, sweet and a superb airplane...wish I could fly one of them now...that was 52 years ago!
The most beautiful commercial plane ever...
A classy Lady indeed!
Vintage flying for the sake of the experience has great potential.
I would name her,,,
Miss Francis.
My father flew the Constellation back in the 50's for Linea Aeropostal Venezolana. This is one of the most beautiful birds ever built.

Gorgeous! Poetry in Motion!

No turboprop EVER sounded this good!!! These were REAL beauties back in their heydey!!!!
Such a beautiful ship. Awe-inspiring.
Such a majestic airplane.
That is one beautiful aircraft.
Having spent my youth in Amsterdam this is still a familliar sound.
What a beautiful airplane

Gorgeous plane with a LOT of personality!
Simply superb... thanks so much for sharing...!!!
Very nice plane. A fine restoration. Thumbs up!

Beautiful !! In addition to the like/dislike there should a LOVE option
Connies were very well built. I remember EC 121s at Eglin in the 1960s.
Great tribute to a classy design
Indeed a thing of beauty
The most beautiful passenger plane ever built. The KLM retro livery was perfect for the Connie, equaling the classic TWA colors of the day.
This are one of the most beautifull things in Earth.....Im crying.
My mom flew this plane in 1948 from Athens Greece to NYC. It made 7 stops and took 36 hours.

I remember this plane flying over my house in Brunswick, Jawja when I was a kid and later as Hurricane Hunters.
just beautiful
The PRT's (power recovery turbines) were first used on the Wright 3350 engines of the civil 1049C Super Constellations.
Ah wow wht great memories i have of them
saw one on final into Newark Airport with right outboard engine feathered and trailing smoke around 1960. NJTP came to a complete stop.
If I was filthy rich I'd buy one of these just to look at it. What a beautiful plane.
Such a BEAUTIFUL, SLEEK, SEXY & POWERFUL machine!!!! Too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore!!!
100% Pure Aeronautical Artwork!!!
She's a beauty.
Howard Hughes helped design the "Connie" and he also flew one in TWA markings solo I think.
MI PAPA.FUE MECANICO EN URUGUAY Y TRABAJO EN CAUSA CON ESTOS AVIONES ES MUY EMOCIONANTE ..,,PODER VER ESTE RESTAURADO...!!!!!
A thing of beauty.
Perhaps you knew my dad - Jan Berkman , dispatcher, with KLM from about '53-'61, stationed in Schiphol, Gander, New York, Miami, and finally, Montreal.
Amazing how at one time people flew everywhere in these.
This was the first airspeed indicator commercially that could actually go up past 350 knots
Wunderschönes Flugzeug👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ahh, the World's Greatest Trimotor...
I jest, of course... I love this plane, and dream of flying on one, someday.
Beautiful connie!

that is a very beautifull airplane!!
Uma obra de arte da engenharia aeronáutica e uma beleza PARABÉNS aos proprietários de Carlos Portugal
Beautifull machine indeed !!!
It's amazing to me that this plane was designed and built only 20 years after the wood and fabric planes of WW1.
Those are WRIGHTS!!!!
beautiful plane
such a NICCEEEEEEE airplane ... !! wish i could fly one of those ...
The darling of the Dutch
Qual é o Nome Da Musica?
I remember one of these grounded and used as a bar in Malta - quite a few years back now but I remember how spacious it seemed inside - I wonder if it still there or what has happened to it
March 7, 2008 It's been a long time since I saw this video
I stand corrected, It was the super Constellation my father flew back then.
@ cowsrock .... What's wrong with nostalgia. You must admit it was a beautiful aircraft. Sweeping lines, etc. ... These Acft must be kept flying as a testimony to our children.
most nicest 3 engine airplane! cuz mostly 1 engine falls out when flying on this airplane :P
Great video
@PeterNGloor the MATS constellation, which was once airworthy is now on static display thanks to Korean airlines
AWESOME VIDEO!!!! FIRST CLASS ALL THE WAY BABY!!!!
Hermosa ave, cuantos años adelante estaba esta fantastica maquina...
@DAUNTLESSDIVERS Hi, it is a P & W 3460 (cubic inch)
beautiful
Very, very cool!!!!
@whitewingsrich , hummm....turboprop! now that would be an idea for the Connie and the lack of engine parts!
Lovely vid of my fav airliner :)
