  • This was not originally intended as a Spey casting instruction video - we did not film any of this with that in mind. Instead, this footage was taken during a salmon fishing trip with friends, with the purpose of creating a souvenir video of the trip ("Spring Silver" - published on this channel).
When editing the footage, it became apparent that there was a variety of casts and techniques captured, that could be used to explain the salmon fisher's usage of different casts for different conditions; a topic often confusing to newcomers to Spey casting. We have therefore edited the footage together with some annotations to provide explanation.
If we had started with the intention of producing a casting video we probably would have filmed all casts off both banks, in the order Single Spey, Double Spey, Snake Roll and Snap T. In any event, we hope some will find this useful.

Enjoyed the video, and laughed out loud at the dog perched on the rock.

I've learned to get my line a little further out there by pushing the line Write back towards the water

Don't push your right arm that much. Don't look at the river, but move your gaze higher up. then you will get a higher stop of the rod and a much longer roll.

Underrated comment. If you cast like the individuals in the video you’ll be in shoulder pain after a day or two. Also you can cast much more effortlessly if you use your bottom hand and not push as much as Jan Roger pointed out.
The gaze idea is stellar 👍I tell people all the time to cast higher. I should get them to look at the skyline or woods across not the river.

Nice tip on the high gaze. Will definitely try it out. I also agree with the comments, good walk through of techniques but the casting in the video could be improved.
