What a great resource! Thank you for all the effort! I'd love to see a quick video, maybe for next year?, where you take a look at them again after some time has passed and see how well they held up. Any cracking/peeling/discoloring etc.?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I had been using liquid acrylics…major brands I use for my paintings…and really had trouble making them stick. Some were Artists Loft and Liquitex. After watching your video I went to Michaels and got their Craft Smart brand. Boy what a difference! So easy to spread and even coverage. Really good advice! Thank you!
thank you so much for testing different brands etc. because I had a terrible time this year getting coverage that did not separate, where years and years ago I had no issues at all. Couldn't figure out what was different. I think years ago I used craft smart acrylic, and here I am years later and those original balls are still completely coated. Through the years I have added many different types of paint and obviously those just don't work as well. i will go back to ones you have recommended. Again, thank you so much. I will be ready for next Christmas.
Well thank you for this demonstration I was just going try the alcohol or polycyclic wax medium or the glue etc because I consistently don’t have consistency sometimes they run sometimes they work sometimes they don’t but now I know it’s because were mixing all different kinds of brands together! Thank you so much I won’t be a having to spend any money on those pouring medium’s. I discovered this type of decorating in the 90s after we purchased a wreath that had these bulbs on them. I swear to this day it was an acrylic paints because there were so thin layer it on top of each other yet strong not like our acrylics today but I could be wrong I wish I knew what medium they used for their marbling affects. Thank you again and they all of us and our loved ones are safe and well
I have used Apple Barrel for over 20 plus years on wood, metal, glass, resin etc.. I add drops of water based on the paint thickness. I very tried paint after paint and AB is ole faith.
Thank you so much! I made some painted ornaments with my Apple Barrel White Matte paint, and added some glitter to it. When I had them finished they looked so pretty, but when I put them on the tree, the paint would get wet again, and pool in the bottom of the ornament. Have you had this happen? Maybe the paint wasn’t totally dry? Or the glitter weighed it down?
The glitter probably caused some of the issue and yes if the paint wasn’t fully dry I could see this happening. A couple of mine did pool a little I have a video with what these looked like a year later on my channel as well
Hi. Thank you for doing that test. I have been making those ornaments a very long time. I use to use just glass ornaments. I now think 🤔 the plastic does a better job. Now that I think about it the glass and plastic are both good. I guess the problem is if the glass gets to close to the Christmas tree 🎄 lights it melts it. I think 🤔 any paint will work.
I used the craftsmart paint you recommended but it keeps cracking. Not sure why. Is there another paint you recommend that would not crack after drying?
Hi! Thanks for this helpful video. I have the deco Americana in white and in both glass and plastic there are bubbles like crazy. Did you notice this happen with any of yours?
So the question I have is where do I get the drying rack? I Pinter some and they had cracks in the pint in the bottom when I let them dry in a glass bulb. I sat it upright on the cup to let it dry. TYA
@@CorinneBlackstone Thanks. Xx. I’m just looking around for what paints to use to decorate baubles. Not just to change the whole colour. Thanks for replying to me. 🙏🏻. And for making such a brilliant video. That must’ve taken ages. And you’ve spent a ton of money on different paints! Really interesting and helpful. An early Merry Christmas greeting to you. X🌲
After a few days, did any of the paint in the ornaments start to crack and peel from the glass or plastic ornaments? I’m having that issue and not sure what happened? I used apple barrel.
I actually had this happen on my glass, but its because I baked mine. I used the folk art since I drew characters on the outside and wanted to be able to seal it all, so I figured that'd require baking it. It did not turn out well 😂. All trial and error! I've heard using either diluted school glue or floetrol from home depot or Lowes allows it to stick better and keep from peeling
Same thing happened for me, any way to fix it? I’ve tried filling the ornaments twice and still same result. There must be an oil film inside or something.
where did you purchase the ornaments from? I bought some from Walmart and it leaves an odd color around the middle of the ball, idk where to find glass ornaments that work
@@CorinneBlackstone omg that seems like so long💔 my daughters have been making these for the past week. We leave them facing down for a while then leave them facing a fan all night . I wanted to see if there’s a faster way
@@CorinneBlackstone i did this for my tree this year. They were beautiful at first but then I noticed them on the tree and the paint qas running and pooling at the bottom. Help!!
a good long time honestly. The thinner paints were dry within 48 hours but they did not hold up well. the thicker paint that held up took about 4-5 days

Walmart, target, dollar tree pretty much anywhere will sell these that sells kitchen ware
I was hoping to see the outside painted. See how that panned out
Painting the outside is a mess lol. Plus you can’t add vinyl to these if you paint the outside of them.

@@sproutsrevil6508 FOr the outside if you want to paint I recommend using oil based paint pens. I did a lot like that years ago

Nope. Just looked its been over a week apple barrel is still good. I actually filmed this ober 4 days so the bulbs sat while before final results

craftsmart for the win
Which paint is best to use on glass
where did you purchase the ornaments from? I bought some from Walmart and it leaves an odd color around the middle of the ball, idk where to find glass ornaments that work
These were I believe from Michael’s or possibly hobby lobby
Question of the day... how did you get them to dry inside?!
As shown they were placed on the drying rack and left to dry over night
Thank you for this now off to buy paint
Great video! Where did you buy your plastic ornaments from?
Michaels for both the plastic and glass :)
Nice 👍👍
Thank you!
Did you ever try using chalk paint? Any thoughts?
I did not try chalk paint. I dont see why it wouldn't work though.
do you seal it inside? or does it crack at all later on?
No sealing I have a video update coming tomorrow on how these lasted after 1 year
How long do you drain and let dry?
These for 24 hours
How long was drying time for these?
I let them dry for 24 hours before capping them. I will have an update on these ornaments coming out towards the end of the month
How long did it take you to dry them before you capped them ?
4 days

Is there a way to make the ornament matte?
They do have some matte style versions they are hard to come by or maybe you could spray them with a matte sealant style spray
After a week the paint separated from the ornaments. Any tips as to why
Not all paint is created equal I have an update coming on these ornaments soon! There were some that lasted and others were a mess.
