Hey Everyone, we've listened to your feedback about the use of the term "affordable" in the title, as we understand this is misleading given the premium nature of the bike range. Our aim was to convey that the new alloy bike is being sold at a significantly lower price than the additive manufacturing bikes, rather than stating that this is what a budget bike looks like these days. We missed the mark with this one and as always we welcome your comments!

Due to recent economic hardships for the vast majority of the world. It would be prudent for GMBN to focus on budget bikes and budget builds to grow the sport.
The bike industry is currently committing slow, painful suicide sitting on 2 years of stock. It's time to promote how fun this sport can be on a budget entry level bikes accross all decipleans xc, Trail, all mountain, Enduro, and downhill.
I have seen this very same business model kill the paintball industry that I was heavily into.
Started as a fun niech sport, very affordable. 10 years into its popularity the industry and outfits like yourself started pushing expensive kits in the early 2000s, going from 400 to 500 for a decent kit to 1000s of dollars. The financial crises of 2008 killed the sport and now it's a fringe activity like it was in the 80s.
If the bike industry and guys like you and others don't start relating to the average consumer our sport will die in popularity and become very fringe with only a few bike companies left making MTB deciplean specific bikes. Like it was in the 80s. We will get back to generic bikes that can do everything decent but not well.
I am sorry to say, no matter the tech and RND of these bikes and components. No bike, road or MTB should cost nowhere near a moto cross, motorcycle or used car. It's a human powered two wheel device with simple drive trains, breaks and suspension. No matter what the little tweaks and changes they try to justify the crazy prices.

I think they’re just comparing it to their other crazy expensive frame. I agree that “affordable” is crazy to describe them. They should have put “more affordable”. For what it is though it’s pretty on par in price with the competition. When you think about the R&D that goes into it and how it’s such a small company, it makes more sense. Unfortunate that your average person can’t enjoy the tech though.

Accessibility was mentioned a couple of times. But having to pay in full isn't accessible. The price for the product considering the r&D that's gone into it, is realistic but without 7 years interest free finance accessibility is limited. That being said, there's no way their company could ever consider finance.

I got this bike (frame only) because of the geometry - the exact reach I need (I'm between sizes), a higher stack than average which is nice for pumping and descending the trails. Also 170mm rear travel isn't that common - I often see 160, or 165 at most for enduros.
I also value frame-only option since I don't want to get a bunch of stuff not of my liking. Most companies should realise about this.
Re affordability, I couldn't afford the carbon frame but I could afford the AL frame. Everyone's situation is different. I don't get the comments, like yeah most of us can't get whatever we want, no shit. Nobody is excluding your from the sport, like, the market is flooded with bargains if you know where to look.

Affordable? What a joke. The only affordable decent bikes are the Asian direct to consumer brands like Polygon. It still boggles my mind how a pedal bike could cost as much or more than a motorcycle.

    • @DontWorryImAPilot
      @DontWorryImAPilot 6 месяцев назад +1

      Simple:
Take ALL OF THE RESEARCH done to make motorcycles work well. All that stuff informs the bike world. But no one's giving that info out for free.
Then, take away the motor. How well does a heavy-ass motorcycle go up a hill (or down switchbacks for that matter) without a motor?
Since mountain bikes have to be powered by people, they have to be light enough to respond via pedaling. Try to tow a motorcycle with a mountain bike.
Additionally, they have to be designed to be as strong as possible because jumping, drops, rock gardens, etc. exert a lot of force. And maneuverable. Have you taken a motorcycle off a hipped four-foot drop into a catch-berm at the top of a mountain recently?
Heavy is easy. Strong is easy as long as you don't mind REALLY heavy. The combination of strong and light is VERY difficult.
Now, spread all of that research out across three or four sizes per bike. Each size requires different tubes and each tube has to be designed, tweaked, and manufactured separately for its length and diameter. Only really one size per motorcycle.
THEN realize that the economies of scale are heavily in favor of motorcycles. Honda sells more motorcycles than probably any brand of mountain bike sells. 18+ million worldwide last year.
...and so far we've only talked about the frame.
It's also fairly inexpensive to make functional eyeglasses. BUT, to make them purpose-built to accommodate a wide range of prescriptions, get the lenses specifically for your prescription, make them light enough on your face to not be super uncomfortable, treat the lenses to be scratch-resistant, design the lenses to be durable, design the material to withstand the accepted wear-and-tear, and then make them look good...very difficult. Expensive, even!
I could make a bike this week. YOU could make a bike this week. You could buy tubes and a welder and a Dremel and just put some things together that hold wheels and a fork and gears.. How would it ride? Would it be good enough to sell? Would you trust it with your life? Would anyone else trust it with their life?
All of that said, you're right $5,000 is not "affordable." I would LOVE to get an Atherton bike. I'm an odd size and just having options to fit me really well would be almost worth it. My budget is probably going to max out at around $3,500 for a sport and hobby I really, truly love. I can't justify those costs, though, when I look at what else I'm trying to do with my money.
How much are people spending on alcohol or drugs or cigarettes or tattoos or video games or unnecessary driving or a million other non-essentials? It's about priorities. My priorities are in building my business so I have less funds available for a hobby than would be ideal. It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make. I've already given up all the other stuff and I won't give up riding bikes.
But the disingenuous "I could buy a motorcycle..." stuff is really a demonstration of ignorance about how this stuff actually happens in bike development and the wild demands mountain biking puts on these relatively simple machines that we literally trust with our lives.

I think looking at the feedback in the comments. GMBN, you need to readjust your thinking. Mind you, i think peeps are missing the 'custom' moniker in regard to the frame. But please think affordable as being less than a grand. Thanks.

I get how everyone is slamming the word "affordable" and rightly so. For me as someone who couldn't care less about carbon, this is a very exciting high end alu frame. "affordable" is a relative word, and considering its certainly more affordable than their carbon frames, I couldn't be happier. And thats how they should phrase it...

  • @wrongusername

This is the problem with GMBN. You just take talking points from whoever pays you. You are disconnected from what normal people can afford. The average monthly salary in the UK is 2800.That's not an affordable bike. It's an overhyped expensive bike that is riding on a name. Start doing proper content for your audience and you might succeed.
