Hey kings and generals make on 1965 India-Pakistan war.
Little known fact - Mannerheim was an Imperial Russian General in WWI and the personal bodyguard of the last czar. While not initially fluent in Russian he learned over the years. Thus, he was familiar with operational doctrines and tactics used by the Russian army when they invaded. He was even able to translate commands given over radio intercept. Mannerheim was also the czar's spy to Qing China. His mission was to probe for weak points and look for locals who would be amenable to joining Russia in the event of a Chinese revolution. He made his way through present day Xinjiang, Gansu, Tibet, and finally Beijing while posing as a historian. His report gave a detailed account of Chinese modernization, troop movements, fort locations, weapon types, geography, etc. He compiled this information into a report which was later used by the Russians in their fight against the Japanese first in Kalkin Ghol and then later in their sweep through northern China in the dying days of WW2. This man deserves his own documentary.

@@Jokakutihut1 Mannerheim remained an imperial loyalist all throughout his life and kept a signed portrait of the old czar in his study. When visitors asked why he kept a painting of the long dead czar he said always said simply, "b/c he is my emperor." He blamed himself for losing the Russian Civil War where he was a general on the Whites and the execution of the royal family. There is a fascinating book about him - "The Horse that Leaps through Clouds."

He respected and even loved old Russia but hated Stalin’s USSR. As you say he lead Russian troops in WW1. Started as a ‘one star’ general (brigade) 1914 and ended it as a ‘three star’ general LtGen (corps) 1917. Not sure he participated in the Russian civil war after the revolution. He was busy fighting for Finnish independence after 1917

Finland never fought for intependence, it was given to them from Lenin.
The whites in Finland did fight against the majority red population with German aid tho.

There's an old joke about the winter war that goes something like this:
A russian regiment is going along a road until they reach a ridge,
when suddenly the russian commander hears a finish man shouting from the other side;
_"One finish soldier is worth 10 russians!"_
The russian commander takes on the challange, and sends ten men over the ridge,
a short firefight later and the same finish man is heard shouting;
_"One finish soldier is worth 100 russians!"_
The russian commander sends 100 men over the ridge, after a few minutes of intense combat everything goes silent.
_"One finish soldier is worth 1000 russians!"_ the same man screams.
Furious, the russian commander sends in the rest of the regiment and a great battle can be heard, after half an hour of heavy shooting and explosions it all goes quiet, and a single wounded russian soldier comes crawling back across the ridge and says;
_"It's a trap! There are TWO of them!"_
If they shit themselves, they should at least shout about a great victory and unprecedented courage.)))

My Greatgrandfather from my fathers side fought in the Taipale in the Winter war. He survived the whole war unscathed.
At the last months of the Continuation war 1941-1944 at the battle of Tali-Ihantala he went MIA.
My grandfather was 3 years old and hes mother my greatgrandmother only 21 when the message came home.
Heart breaking.
From my mothers side my grandfather lost two of hes three older brothers in the continuation war.
He still has their pictures on his nightstand.
My grandfather was in train to be sent to front when he was pulled out of the train to his disappointment. He was only phone mechanic and reapair guy in vital communication hub. Spend his war riding harley davidson and racing to repair lines after soviet bombings...

After watching a video about toy soldiers maneuvering on the map, I'm thankful that you wrote a comment like this. The whole generation of men were if not killed, mutilated physically and/or psychologically. You can only imagine the long term impact of that to the small country including women, children and children's children. Everyone lost something.

Tali-Ihantala was probably one of toughest fights there was. Whole Landscape changed with artillery barrages in a day.
As I know from history, the battle of Tali-Ihantala was decisive for Finland, as soviets advanced there straight after they have taken Viipuri and there was a question will they make a breakthrough towards Helsinki or not. Finnish commandment understood that and thrown into this battle basically everything they had and won it, which was the last victory of the fins in WW2, but at very big cost, so at the same time they were unable to stop the soviet advance to the north of Ladoga. After this defeat soviet marshal Govorov asked for more reinforcements to continue his advance towards Helsinki and "to break that Finnish spine" as he said, but Stalin refused, saying that the outcome of the war will be decided in Berlin, not in Helsinki. He definitely realised that price of this victory might be too big, as soviets already had once before. Actually, Russian historians even today don't like to mention this battle. So despite this tragic end you must be proud of your Greatgrandfather.

This is not a joke but "true" story. Stalin had respect for Mannerheim. He was only "white russian general" left alive after purges. And he had served imperial Russia. After ww2 communists wanted to have Mannerheim trialed as war criminal (logic was not big thing in war crime trials) it was said commrade stalin was not at all pleased with idea. And Mannerheim was president after the war couple of years...
Actually, soviet bombers appeared in Helsinki and bombed capital. Thus starting war.
Finland (3.5 million inhabitants) is not stupid enough to declare war on 170 million Soviets. No matter what soviet history says. It just dont happen. Size matters.

Stalin: "Uhh..... you know... just want to feel safe and all." *whistles casually*

Despite the fact that they could get a large territory from the Soviets without a war and without losing Finnish territory as a result of the war. No matter what you say, Stalin's demand to move the border away from Leningrad was quite reasonable.

From what I heard grandfathers speak, it was very cold, but when in front fighting, you didnt feel because of fear of death. And nobody talked. Everybody kept very quiet untill very end.

It should be "tulta munille" which was the Finnish war cry. It translates to "fire at balls".
More like when the snow is kind of like back home in russia but smelling faintly of coffee and a liberal outlook.
This has personal importance to me, my Grandfather (fathers side) was among the evacuated along with his family from the Karelian Isthmus. When the war broke out, he and his siblings were sent as refugees to Sweden, where they were placed in foster homes all over Blekinge and Skåne. His father, my great grandfather fought and died in this war. and despite being just 2 years old, my grandfather was placed without any of his siblings. Most of the children didn't return to Finland after the war but stayed in Sweden and became swedes. And that is where my last name comes from. My grandfather spent most of his life in a small village called Svängsta outside the city of Karlshamn where I grew up. He grew up and married my grandmother and they would be married for almost 40 years. He passed away in 2007. He was also the inspiration for my first name.

Finnish soldiers kept very low profile. Soviet Union had two very powerful weapons, airforce and artillery. Russian artillery is not called god of battlefield for nothing. And with 20 against 1 ratio, yes there was gangsta around, but it certainly didnt speak finnish.

My grandad was in this war. He was officer, i have seen his medals in my grandmoms home. He died when i was young boy. He was a good man but when he drinked the demons off war game out. My morher hated, feared and loved him. Sober he was good husband and good father, but war broke him and in the end, war won.

First time the Goliath attacked because he was suspicious. Bit there was no ruse against him But he made one to start to war - with field guns and ammo the little guy didn't have. David fought that fight without the help of those criminals. UK & France even planned to help, though they had selfish motives concerning Narvik & Kiruna.
And they sold out the little guy. The Western allies abndoned the little country by the Baltic. There was only 2 evils left to choose: to let the bear eat you, or join the wolfpack to fight the bear. Well, there was no Axis pact signed, so that far it didn't go. Finland saw the war preparations of Stalin - they were sure he would atatck again, the signs were in the air. They thought the smaller risk was to attack then, when the Germans did too.
So, actually with the 39-40 war Stalin got what he feared: Finland now fought against him with Germany. An example why we shouldn't believe our fears, we might mke them happen by our fearful actions.
And Finland wasn't a Nazi country: it was a democratic many party country with socialists almost the biggest one. The extreme left and right were small: the communists were not in fashion, and the right wing extremists made a failed coup in the early 30's, so their leaders were arrested, and their support diminished. After WWII their party became illegal.
My grandfather fought as a Swedish volunteer,first at Salla then the Karelian ismus.
amazing how an outnumbered and outgunned army could hold against these odds with such great victories.

Bravo, sir! This is the best Winter War Intro / Setup to the war in RUclips. Everything was accurate and detailed. Also, the whole context is important to understand so the brief history tour was very pleasant. Thank you sir. My grandfather from dad's side was from Karelian isthmus, present day Soviet Union, and grandfather from mother's side from the very location of Raatteentie. Both naturally served in the war and miraculously survived, so the subject is quite interesting and personal to me as a Finnish man & history nerd. All males (effectively around 70%) still serve in the Defence forces. ♫ ♪ Don't tread on me!

Thank you for the in depth-background section! It's very rare to see representations of the war with the events of 1914-1920 thoroughly explained. A very good video overall, even your Finnish pronunciation is pretty good!
Edit: Finland didn't exactly lose it's autonomy in 1905, it actually reformed into a more democratic system while retaining it's own currency etc. But the Russians began trying to unify their realm by limiting Finland's autonomy and that set in motion various forms of resistance, though most Finns didn't see independence as realistic or even desirable until Russia started collapsing into revolutionary chaos in 1917

Almost as fast as Sweden prevented English and French volutaries coming to Help Finland at hour of its need. But ordinary Swedish people with arms did help and thanks for that. But Swedish socialist government..

History does but economical and political facts dont change. Finland -Russia realtions after ww2 were complicated but relatively well handled by president Kekkonen.
No matter who is in chargec(besides socialists) you need to feed and employ your population.
@Stick me thumbs in yer ass The Soviet Union was wrong to invade Finland, but the Fins made it clear they were a rival by joining the anti-communist pact with the axis before the war. And during the continuation war, they killed a lot of Soviet Civilians, Finland was no Saint, and The Soviet Union still saved humanity from the Axis in the end.

When I was young, my father always talks to me about Finland. He was a Jew-polish immigrant to Brazil and like to remember the history of Eastern Europe. I was all ears and about Finland, because he always talked something meritous about brave Finland’s people and their determination to save the country's independence and to fight against the Russian army. But not only with respect to Finland's history. I learned the Finish people have an Asiatic ancestry, Fino-Ugric, as well the Hungarians and the defies of the environment, the North's coldest lands, where the life was mandatorily harsh. When he talked with reference to Finland, the comparisons with Brazil were usual owing to the fact the Brazilian environment is rich and lush, offering all resources to live in very well (despite this possibility...). However, since then, my admiration concerning Finland never decrease. This nation and its commendable people defend their motherland in opposition to Russia, a foe several times stronger, they have a developing economy and maintain a free and democratic society. Ultimately, I believe that the Cold War is an epic event that demonstrates the soul of one people's courage. But, is only one event in a memorable facts collection regarding Finland, its people, and its culture!

Some 1200 Danes volunteered to fight in the Winter War (including some excellent pilots), many who died defending Finland. We Finns will never forget their sacrifices for our country.

Great, I've been waiting for this! A few sidenotes: The Finnish tanks were Vickers bought from the UK before the war. As a means of cutting costs, they were bought without optics and guns. Hence, the first tanks were not usable until February, and even then almost completely useless. Half of the artillery was from 1877, but the main problem was still ammunition. In November, the Finns had as much artillery ammunition overall than what the Red Army could use in a single shelling before an offensive.
@Kings and Generals: Where did you find the info on Mannerheim's plan to attack Petrograd? I'd never heard of this before, would love to catch up on it.
There is a section about Mannerheim's Petrograd designs on his Finnish wikipedia page, though it's absent from the English version for some reason.
Essentially Mannerheim, who'd made a decades-long career in the Imperial Russian Army and had many friends among the Russian white leadership, was a committed anti-bolshevik and would've wanted to lead his victorious White Guards to assist the Russian whites by taking Petrograd. However, this fell apart because the great powers weren't ready to fund the expedition (Finland's economy was a wreck after the civil war and there was a wide spread food shortage). Also the various White Russian groups were opposed to independence movements in the former empire and didn't want to recognize Finnish independence. At home Mannerheim lost the presidential election to Ståhlberg, who was more moderate and wanted to focus on rebuilding Finland and reuniting the divided nation rather than launching risky military ventures. So eventually Mannerheim's plans came to nothing and he retired from politics for the time being. It's interesting to speculate what would have happened if Finland had attacked Petrograd from the north while Yudenitsh attacked from the south in the fall of 1919.
Besides Vickers there were also Renault FTs, I believe.

I had always thought the Soviet claims/fears of Finland attacking Leningrad (before WW2) to have been an idea without any basis in reality. However, now thinking about it, the combination of the voluntary expeditions to East-Karelia, the plans for an attack on Petrograd, the close ties to Germany and the general anti-bolshevik attitude after the Whites won the Civil War - I am beginning to understand now. Naturally, after the Bolsheviks won their civil war in Russia, I don't think anyone in Finland would have been stupid enough to try to pull off that stunt, but overall it does give some basis to Soviet demands.
@@seneca983 Ah, how could I forget! It's true, the Renaults were the only operational tanks Finland had at the start of the war. However, they were from WW1 era and useless in combat, which I think they never saw. I think I remember reading they were disassembled and used as fixed position guns on the Karelian Isthmus.

Stalin's plan was to occupy whole Finland. Then he wanted to add to occupied Finland the territory of Soviet Karelia. The two territories would become "The Finish-Karelian Socialistic Republic". If Stalin succeed then in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union that republic would of cause got independence like Estonia, Latvia and other former Soviet republics. Finland would be almost two times bigger now. But of cause with ruined economy and other problems. And Murmansk (I live in Murmansk, Russia) would be cut off from the territory of rest Russia. I think for Finland it was good luck that it did not become the Soviet republic. Now it is small but beautiful country with one of the highest living standard in the world.

@@gilgameschvonuruk4982 It is nice to live in Murmansk, but mostly in summer time. Otherwise it is cold and dark. However now it makes no diffirence where do You live - most of the people everywhere in the world locked themselves at theirs homes))
Saami people live in central part of Murmansk region as well as in Murmansk itself. The number of Saami people is the same for many year - about 2 000 people. I have Saami and half-Saami among my friends.
If Stalin had succeeded 1939 - 40 and the Finnish-Karelian Socialist Republic was established, the northern Europe would have developed differently. Sweden could not have remained neutral in WW2, Germany could not have reached Leningrad. The Soviet Union would have been much stronger with easier sea borders to defend. It would have won the race not only to Berlin but further west as far as it wanted to go, it could have crushed Germany without the allies. In the continuation war, the Finnish army was already 500 000 men strong, and to keep the balance, the Soviet Union had to keep divisions in Carelia instead of using them further south. My opinion is that if Finland had been occupied, there would not be independent Finland nor Independent Estonia today. There would be a much stronger and bigger Russia.
@@MurmanskRU But there was Karelo-Finnish SSR in any case but it was annexed to the Russian SSR in 1956. Not sure if that would have happened had all of Finland been conquered.

General winter helped both sides in this war. It helped the finns at first since soviet troops were not prepared for such harshness at first and deep snow hindered movement. On the other hand, frozen lakes gave soviet troops and tanks much more options to maneuver and attack.

Just to clarify: Finland was USSR "zone of interest" in Molotov-Ribbentrop pact along with Baltic countries. In all these countries, USSR first got permission to put bases and then toppled the governments.
This was not about Stalin was not sure or concerned. Please do not cover up or rationalize the USSR expansion and aggression that is no different from Hitler's.
