SAN JOSÉ DEL PACÍFICO - OAXACA’s magic mushroom mountain town | hike to SAN MATEO RÍO HONDA

On our way from OAXACA CITY to the OAXACA coast, we stopped by SAN JOSÉ DEL PACÍFICO to spend a few days in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. Famous among travelers for their access to psilocybe mexicana magic mushrooms (or “hongos mágicos”), SAN JOSÉ DEL PACÍFICO is a great stop to reset and spend time in nature.
We soaked in the amazing views, wonderful OAXACA mountain food, and went on a gorgeous (and long) hike to neighboring SAN MATEO RÍO HONDO.

We’re Sean and Elliot, two thirty-something former musical theatre actors and restaurant industry veterans with a passion for food and travel.
In 2015 we got married, said goodbye to our acting ambitions, quit our day jobs, and decided to spend our honeymoon on a one-year Working Holiday Visa backpacking throughout New Zealand. That once-in-a-lifetime experience changed our perspective and opened us up to the possibility of long-term travel.
2020 was a brutal year for us, but it gave us the opportunity to rethink our priorities and commit ourselves to our dream of traveling the world together. So in August of 2021, we sold all of our stuff and bought a one-way ticket to Mexico with the plan to travel for as long as we possibly can.
