My understanding since VI3 (2005) is that for vMotion to work both the source and target hosts must be up and functional. HA (High Availability) is intended for situations where the source host has failed. Thanks. I always thought fault tolerance is invoked when there is an issue with the host only. You state it can happen when there is an issue with the vm as well. Ha reboots if there is an issue with the host as well.

Yup. Absolutely correct, I got the nomenclature wrong. Should have crossed out the VM, not the host, in the first instance.
