    I'm still getting it in manual, but this was a fantastic review that really highlights the benefits of the DCT! You can tell Hyundai definitely has faith in this transmission competing with VW's DSG, and is trying to get people to use it.

    My buddy picked up a 2020 PP Veloster N in performance blue. I tried talking him into getting it in black with the red accents or white with red accents, but I guess he made the right choice as it is his. Anyways, although this car is not for me as a daily, it is a absolute animal in the outskirts of the city. We have a lot of twists and turns, corners and hills, and this thing eats them up for snacks. My other friend has a SS 2 Camaro, and what a machine that is also. But for where we live, the PP Veloster N stayed right with the SS. And I didn't think any car could handle like the Camaro does. So fantastic job Hyundai, you killed it with this car. Now I would love one if they would add a more upscale interior. I personally have to have both, performance and softer, slightly more upscale cabin for it to be my daily. As to why I am seriously looking at the Sonata N-Line. I just wish Hyundai would of added a LSD or AWD so that it could handle the power. I'm seeing even the best summer tires are burning out when you punch it.

    Wish list: 4 real doors (possibly as another model), nicer interior materials that are comparable to a GTI, more comfortable rear seats, and a 'comfort' mode for the suspension (in addition to the normal and sport settings). I have been cross shopping this with the GTI recently and it is such a difficult choice. The GTI was far more comfortable with a better ride and rear seats that were actually usable (more space, more headroom, better ingress/egress, and a more comfortable seat design) but the Veloster feels significantly quicker and more playful than the GTI. The superior Hyundai warranty is also a factor, but the dealership experience could not have been more different. The VW store was low key, low pressure, and very professional. The Hyundai store made us feel like trash and that the Veloster was as rare and valuable as some of the most sought after Ferraris. The vehicles themselves make for a difficult choice, but if this is the typical Hyundai shopping experience (and who knows what the service would be like) it would be difficult to hand over $34K+.

    All cars have a 2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine nowadays. I guess it won't be long before we will be looking back longingly on such "big and serious engines" when every car weighs 6,000 pounds and has a dual electric motor setup in order to get more than 300 miles of range or else has a 1 liter 3-cylinder. Sacrificing the involvement and engagement of a manual for the benefits of a dct is a price too high to pay for me. I respect your opinion but having a computer execute shifts for me while I flick a paddle does not sound like a good time. I have no problem trying them out. But living with an automatic day after day sounds so monotonous and disconnected. I appreciate how well this box is engineered but life is too short for two pedals in my view.

    • @kadedone
      @kadedone 3 года назад

      @U-tube-is-gay Fuk-u-tube you are really just arguing semantics and I actually used the word involved and engaged so I'm not even sure who you are addressing. Regardless, there are such things as sweet spots in life. Nobody said that manuals were better than autos here. Just that they were more engaging. For automatic drivers, would driving be as enjoyable without a steering wheel? Just letting the computer steer? A steering wheel is just an input to the car right? I'm really not sure what you are trying to say. It seems like you are maybe responding to someone else because you are not touching on anything I mentioned. Both transmissions have pros and cons. Drive what you want. But don't go crying on the internet about losing the "connection" to your car when they take away your steering wheel and pedals.

    • @kadedone
      @kadedone 3 года назад

      @U-tube-is-gay Fuk-u-tube Well if you are making general comments on experiences with manual drivers that's fair. I always try my best to be open minded as possible despite my driving preferences. A good auto or dual clutch has many benefits, but yes, I still feel that it would be more "disconnected", than having a slick manual to row. In my example before imagine a car without a steering wheel that was computer controlled. I think it's fair to say that would feel more disconnected than a regular car with a wheel. It's literally a control/touch point that you are missing. You are physically in less contact with the car through touch. Leading to a loss of connection in a way. I still don't think one transmission is better...it's just what is better for the specific driver. If you require that involvement and engaging sensation the manual is better for you. If you are looking for ease of use, convenience and computer controlled quicker shifts automatic is better for you. The only sad part is manuals are dying off so quickly that there are not many options left for people that crave that experience.

    • @kadedone
      @kadedone 3 года назад

      @U-tube-is-gay Fuk-u-tube Yeah I see what you are saying but I feel your perspective on the enjoyment of the mechanics of a manual are a bit skewed. A manual gives you that added dimension to the drive with direct control over the clutch and gears. An automatic is not replacing that feeling just because you can tell it what gear to be in. It's not the same at all. When I'm driving I am the transmission computer, I am executing each shift from beginning to end. In an auto, you are asking the car to change a gear for you and it will do what it is programmed to do. There is not the level of satisfaction there because you didn't do anything really. Driving is about the act of driving including the shifts. You take the shifting away that is lost. You cannot stall an auto by flubbing a shift and many of these autos will upshift for you if you hit the limiter even in manual mode. Again, just because you can ask the auto to do something for you doesn't replace the act of shifting yourself. And having those extra things to do are enjoyable for many many people even if they are not for others. A lot of modern tech has diluted the driving experience as you have discovered with your older car experiences. There can be a sweet spot with a convergence of modern tech and engaging manual controls so it's doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. But flicking a paddle is not executing a shift. Feathering the clutch just right while balancing the throttle right at the engagement point as you roll in to the power is one of the great pleasures in life for many people. To each their own, but having a computer take all that fun away from me is not my idea of a great drive. Manual doesn't feel like a lot of work at all. It feels like the exact right amount of involvement with an enjoyable experience of controlling a vehicle. Why let a computer have all that fun if I'm able to myself?

    The market reality for almost every car is that there will be zero availability of a manual transmission on the west coast. Do a cargurus search on a manual Veloster and the nearest ones to, say, LA are in the midwest or east coast.

    Love that Hyundai has properly stepped into the hot hatch market. Affordable fun cars are sadly getting too rare these days.
    Motoman, I'm not sure why people prefer paddles on the columns. I like them on the steering wheel because I can reliably reach them pretty much whenever I need them. When they're on the column and you're making a turn, you then have to reach over way more to hit the paddle. Even watching this video, it's rare for your hands to get so crossed over that column paddles would be advantageous. To add on to that, I have usually downshifted before I reach a corner that requires that much hand movement, so it's not ever a problem. And if I want to upshift, I'm usually going straight, so once again, paddles on the wheel are not a problem.
    What am I missing here?

    I understand this is a GREAT performance car, BUT....... I would not even consider this car because of that CABIN. Hyundai could easily add some soft touch materials that won't add much weight, they could offer a moon roof like the G70 or Stinger has, leather seats. You have the Bad Azz car, yet when you get in that cabin, now people think you have a 2,000 dollar car. I really thought Hyundai would of addressed this issue by now

    The hyundai "N" vehicles are a great bang for the buck. But for pure enjoyment of driving in any situation an automatic is NEVER better. Can it be faster.... maybe a tad. Can it get better mpg.... is see the claim often but have never seen it in real world application. And the fun factor of this veloster gets cut in half with an auto. If you can drive manual, you should.

      @@frf1670 I have. Although it was a GTI. And like i said, sure its a tad faster. But I am just a manual trans guy. I was bored with the DSG and bout the manual. That turned out to be a horrible mistake because VW uses clutches that are about as durable as wet toilet paper. And the manuals have this nasty habit of dropping the thrust bearing and destroying the engine. (ask me how I know). That being said I have not driven a hyundai DCT, and after driving my cousins veloster N with the 6 speed manual, I have no intention to try an auto. Fast and fun are 2 totally different things.

    I get so tired of people saying this car needs a sunroof. A sunroof ruins it as a track car. Hyundai understands this. Same reason the Type R doesn't have a sunroof. You can't give up two inches of headroom and expect to wear a helmet. I guess if you're five foot six like MotoMan you don't get that. Also, a sunroof adds weight, and adds it in the worst possible spot..., up top. Let me reiterate, this is a f@#&ing track car. If you want a sunroof, perhaps you'd be better off in a Fiat 500...?

    I have driven the new dct and a few older stick ones.. the new seats are much nicer but.. I do not agree the car is still worth the money or even on my list anymore.. the old one with pp could be had for around 28$ this new one is 35$ and impossible to find in a stick.. I’m not paying 33-34$ for a car I could of got a few months ago for 26-28$ even tho it has nicer seats and the dct isn’t bad .. I didn’t get to test ngrin but it was fun.. but not 35$ fun.. that to me puts the car in a whole different price range.. no longer is it close to a si or gli or wrx... now it’s really in type r, sti, etc range.. etc

    • @frf1670
      @frf1670 3 года назад

      The DCT car (which has a different tune verified by dyno) is faster than the STI and Civic Type R. With DCT the performance is more than the cars you mentioned. Koreans took the stock DCT Veloster N on track and did consistently better than stock Civic Type Rs. Mind you most journalists got 4.8-5.1s 0-60 in DCT. It’s really a honey of a transmission especially on track with the “track sense mode” on. Even the manual car was really a league above GLI, GTI, and Wrxs. It’s a track ready car stock versus those being just souped up commuters. The ones you test drove probably had 87 octane in it. Almost all Hyundai dealers fill them up with 87 and loses about 20% power. Mine was filled with 87 at the dealer and I had to request a tank of premium. it was a huge difference.

    I think paddles are in a great spot. After driving paddles on the GTI for many years where it's the same way, I have to say they are perfectly practical and I wouldn't have it any other way.
    The sunroof would add weight and cost. Most people would probably not want to pay for it so Hyundai would lose money on that option. The car is great as it is, just wish they offered it in Charcoal Gray like the other Veloster models. Most important though, you can't buy the car anywhere. Hyundai did not export enough for everybody.

    Honestly I want this car I love it but I have some issues with Hyundai’s decisions. As someone from the north east not having at least a heated seat is very frustrating. just about every other car in the sport hatch/ sedan segment offers that.. it pissed me off to no end when I found out that asian market version of this car comes with it standard, along with a heated wheel. For a car that will cost you at least 35k especially after taxes and freight it is sorely lacking in bare minimum creature comforts. Why is there no adjustable lumbar support?. And while I’m on price why did Hyundai force all these safety features on that now jack up the price of the car. What happened to options. At the least, why not offer an optional winter package (heated seats and wheel) and make the new safety features a different optional package so the consumer can decide what’s important to them. This car was priced perfectly when it first came out at 29 with the performance pack. Now it sits at 32,250 for manual or 33750 and after freight and taxes your looking at prices between 35 to 37... at that price your getting dangerously close to civic type R or STI money... I don’t want everyone to think I hate the car I love the car but Hyundai needs to think a bit more about their consumers and what’s best for them.

      Carlo, while I understand your sentiments as a previous longtime STI owner, the Veloster N is way more fun than an sti when comparing them out of the factory. I've never had this much fun in a stock car besides driving my friends M3. It's weird to say but the driving experience of the STI almost seems dull and outdated compared to the N. Maybe I'm just so use to the driving an STI for 6 years as a daily but the driver feedback, steering, handling, and exhaust are all way better out the gate for the N, not to mention the tech in the Hyundai is 1000x better than what Subaru does and thats just a fact.
      Not to mention I've seen a few track videos of a base N vs a base STI and the N pulls away pretty much every time with ease. I think it's honestly worth at least 35k. If anything the previous STI was a complete ripoff in price considering a base WRX was actually faster than the old dinosaur STI in a 0-60 and Subaru wanted 8k more for the old fellow.

    I don't get the "paddles should be mounted on the column" thing. Just watching your video shows why the wheel makes more sense. In your canyon drive, your hands at nine and three, and you don't shuffle steer. The paddles are always exactly where you need them. Your right hand will always shift up, and your left, down. If the paddles were on the column, you'd have to move your hand for any mid-corner shift, along with thinking about which hand does what.
    I know that when I'm autocrossing or tracking my daily driver, I'm glad they're on the wheel. I have a couple of friends who race sports racers, and another who's in the throes of adapting a DCT to his NASA GTS car. Their paddles are wheel mounted for the reasons above.
