  • Simthali . Nepal........... An Overview of the community and how trees can sustain them .
Simthali, nestled in the heart of Bagmati Province, stands as a testament to the intricate relationship between its resilient inhabitants and the challenging yet awe-inspiring natural landscape
Approximately 47 km (29 mi) away from the capital, Kathmandu, Simthali boasts a population of 1,707 residing in 328 individual households.
The region embraces a mixed tradition of farming, where terraced cultivation is an age-old practice, and the surrounding remnants of forests and timber forests create a picturesque backdrop. Livelihoods intertwine with the land, as farmers cultivate on terraces and tend to their animals through traditional methods, showcasing a harmonious coexistence with the environment.
Simthali experiences the dynamic embrace of both tropical and subtropical climates. Mild and brief winters characterize the subtropical climate, while true tropical conditions ensure frost-free winters every year. Hot temperatures persist throughout the year, with seasonal fluctuations marked by wet (rainy/monsoon) and dry seasons.
The hills and mountains, though posing challenges to agriculture, add to the region's beauty. However, this topographical variation presents obstacles to food transport, contributing to the need for importation. Over 20 percent of the population living below the national poverty line has led to innovative solutions like migrant labour to bridge the gap in food availability.
The vulnerability of Simthali to natural hazards, including earthquakes, floods, landslides, and droughts, requires a resilient community response. Climate change amplifies these challenges, affecting the timing and quantity of crops, livelihood stability, and community dynamics.
In response to these challenges, New Growth's initiatives in Simthali focus on building resilience and sustainability in agriculture. Their approach encompasses diverse crop production, income-generating crops, and the promotion of organic practices. Educational outreach, infrastructure enhancements, and community engagement stand as pillars of their strategy, weaving a tapestry of hope and resilience against the backdrop of Simthali's unique challenges.
