Sometimes I cannot believe the amount of talent God has gifted to Pakistan, yet somehow we were never able to look at it, we had it only for people who could see it from the outside. Imagine if we could see it "right". Ali sethi, you are a generational talent. One who will be remembered and missed from a multitude of future generations. lucky to have you with us, right now!

If you are here, believe me you have an awesome taste in music and you have realized that every time Hindustanis like me find solace and love from art like these, your heart fills with joy. After all, our forefathers gave up their comforts and sacrificed their lives so that we two can live happily ever after. Do not let anybody from either side lessen the love you have for the other side. It is times like these that test how humane we truly are. Always remember, our forefathers fought together against the colonial rule. It reminds me of the scene from LOTR when Frodo asks Sam,"What are we holding on to, Sam? " and Sam replies ,"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo...and it's worth fighting for.” Lots of love from India.
You are absolutely right sir. And it's amazing to find people who shares the same kind of thought. This piece is truly a bliss and so it's message. When everything around us is conspiring to separate us hope we still stay united.. love from India ❤
What a comment. It feels great to know that we still have people on either side of the boarder who think like this. Many thanks. May the Love prevail! May the hatred end! May the music heal! Everafter.
When I heard Ali Sethi I freaked out..kyunki sach ye hai ki Pakistan ke youth ne ( except Atif ) ab tak music ko ganda nahi hone diya hai india ke T-Series ki tarah ..hats off and lots of love from india ..on loop number 15 for this song
Some thoughts while watching the video: The set mimics something you'd see in an airport or a train station. We are all passengers and somehow someday we'd have to be at a stage - a station - where everything around us is broken; firaaq (separation) is inevitable. But everyone going through that, despite having different stories & backgrounds, is connected. Our longing, our pain, our search for destiny unites us. And though it may take some time, the light you're seeking will illuminate, just like in a station or airport you'd look for your departure time on the screens and will tell you that the wait is over. You'd finally reach the state of Wasl (Union) in the end.
Nice interpretation. I would like to highlight that if you notice he had used different aged people, of different religions, and sexuality probably. :) Humans become humans in distress, humanity prevails.

I am sitting here sad, that I missed so much... but then I hear a whisper... This song is in repeated mode on my Playlist, and the first I heard it, my tears started rolling down my cheeks. I thought it's because of the voice, it would go away as I become used to of the song and voice. But it's been 1 night 1 whole day, I am still feeling the same. Surreal, exceptional, loving, soulful, totally in awe of this art.
Chandni Raat - A Bliss of Subtlety! Co-Incidentally, I am writing this note exactly one year since the release of this single by Ali Sethi! Not that I discovered this song only now. But I must admit that I took some time to digest it, appreciate the depth of a seemingly simple song in the first listening. This song has multi-dimensional layers of music, lyrics, visualisation and meaning which makes the process of interpreting it so beautiful. Overall the composition guides the viewer through emotions of separation and distance at first to the event of union towards the end with subtle, metaphorical representations of love. Love of all kinds for all kinds of people - as is apparent from the video. Be it gratitude, warmth, concern, affection, compassion and a multitude of such emotions. While there is a human to human element apparent during the whole video, towards the end there’s also an over-arching union happening of everyone in the room taking our interpretations to a different layer of abstraction! Musically, the song has a simple arrangement - primarily anchored on piano based chords and arpeggios and occasional riffs at places to fill up the musical space beautifully. So it’s mainly the Piano and Ali’s vocals which is quite dominant in the whole arrangement. The song is on D-major scale and the chord progressions are the quintessential 4-chord combination at most places which is nicely enriched by piano riffs to add a tinge of variety to the background music. Few lines into the song, there’s a subtle layering of strings and brass sections (like one at 02:00) which grows to prominence towards the end. This subtle musical build up also correlates with the larger narrative of separation to union as it leads to a positive crescendo. French Horns makes a pronounced appearance in the last interlude (at 03:44) and then eventually the whole verse that follows bringing a sense of warmth in the emotion. I also particularly liked the rhythmic notes of the brass section towards the end (at 04:25) bringing a sense of tempo into the song in an otherwise percussion-free arrangement. The essence of the song remains Ali’s vocals which binds the music, visuals and lyrics into a beautiful imaginative story. Ali sings on a relative low scale to perhaps convey the depth of the composition effectively. It also helps in clarity of the notes as well as emoting through it effectively which sometimes get lost in high scales. Ali is masterful with his vocals throughout the compassion. There are places where you see a fluidic transition of melody where you can hardly discern the underlying notes. Then there are also places where you experience the trademark Ali Sethi alaaps - crisp, clear and immaculate. Ali uses amplitude variations effectively to emote throughout the song. As much as the music builds on you on frequent listening, the video keeps adding various dimensions to your interpretations over a period of time as well. All the actors, while silent, yet convey a lot through their subtle actions, emotions and body language and keep the viewers guessing. Overall the composition is what I call a ‘Bliss of Subtlety’ - a collection of subtle influences that is driving a larger, stronger point. Enjoy discovering and unraveling this! Musically Yours, Prabhu

That guy with the headphones turning to look at the girl in the burqa with a Rolling Stones printed bag.. and every single person who has a story to tell in this video.. can't describe how beautifully made this video is. And Ali Sethi, what can I say about your divine voice !
I know that a lot of people are gonna come here after watching Modern Love: Mumbai. I was happy that they used this song in the series coz Ali's music will now get the recognition it deserves. Not that it hasn't been recognised yet but I feel like it still hasn't received the immense appreciation that it deserves, as opposed to the overrated artists out there.

Cried listening to it. The focus was brilliant. Society is so self centered within that in a gathering "mehfil" (Eg: train/bus station). It could be a chance to socialize and share ones sorrow (eg: "Mehfil" gathering of people) which majority now ignores. Great voice sir, Great Message!!!!!

I think Pakistan is going through a revolution in Music and Video Making, thanks to so many people in our media industry. But with some people you always expect something special.
Ali Sethi you remind me of “Rafi Sahab” ... What a voice texture you have ... Line” Na khule khwaab aankh line” you won’t believe how beautifully you have sung ...
Ali Sethi seems to be a big advocate of composite culture of undivided India. Really brilliant how he portrays the message of song in this video... people from different culture sharing same roof and making connections.
What the hell is undivided India? There was no India before 1947, there were a bunch of princely states and provinces each with their own cultures. Please stop Indian washing Ali. He's not one of you, no matter how much you make him out to be.
Ali sethi gets so little in return ... what a voice.. controlled vocals.. n integration of emotion ... its a must for him to be a bigger star than he is currently... 👏👏
Wow lovely song...I liked your theme, how you put folks from different cultures, it was truely amazing to see the diversity, from an infant to aged and from a funky guy wearing headphones to a ethnic guy wearing his shall.

Beautiful, the video has such a deep meaning, it's not just the lovers separation, it's the ego, gender, class, nations and we're all one heart, blood and soul, love Urdu and Pakistan, peace.

Am a big fan. I think he has very good taste with the way he chooses the video sequence. Did you guys notice that the video was shot in a way where they show that all the things were happening together. When the sardar ji helps out with the fire, next scene is where the two guys share a lovely moment, there u can see the sardar ji's head from the background, the third scene shows the kid and u can see the sardar ji helping out with the fire in the background.. beautifully shot! The video stands out too on it's own.
Prime video did not include this song from Modern love Mumbai in the official soundtrack of the series just because Ali is from Pakistan, music crosses all boundries imposed by hatred.Ali Sethi you're a great singer n the wonderful experience of listening to this song is like something money can't buy and only be felt.
I like the fact how subtly ali sethi has highlighted so many issues in one video and no one has objected. People like Ali are hope for a better and more tolerant Pakistan.

Musically Yours,
Prabhu
No one could describe this as beautifully as you have brother.

Listen to the song "Pyar Mujhse Jo Kiya Tumne" by Chitra and Jagjit Singh from the 1982 film. India has previously experienced that era.
I know that a lot of people are gonna come here after watching Modern Love: Mumbai. I was happy that they used this song in the series coz Ali's music will now get the recognition it deserves. Not that it hasn't been recognised yet but I feel like it still hasn't received the immense appreciation that it deserves, as opposed to the overrated artists out there.
its better for him to stay away from spotlight so he can produce more great music!
Background Trumpet ,French Horn and Flugelhorn with mellow tinge of piano. Its difficult to even imagine a ghazal on these instruments. Beautiful 💙💙💙
Pakistan you have really talented singers which amazes me each time. Namaste beautiful hearted people of Pakistan from Kathmandu, Nepal.

Completely agree 😭🙏
Ali Sethi, the way u sing (gayaki) reminds of Mohammed Rafi's soulful style..was transported to an old world..ur voice and d way u sing/modulate ur voice/nuance ur notes (harkat) hs that magical old world charm and purity!

I think Pakistan is going through a revolution in Music and Video Making, thanks to so many people in our media industry. But with some people you always expect something special.

Ali Sethi seems to be a big advocate of composite culture of undivided India. Really brilliant how he portrays the message of song in this video... people from different culture sharing same roof and making connections.
If you ever watch any of his insta live sessions, he always talks about the culture as a whole. How it was “purane waqton mein”
Mostly all artists are great ambassador of love and peace.
What the hell is undivided India? There was no India before 1947, there were a bunch of princely states and provinces each with their own cultures. Please stop Indian washing Ali. He's not one of you, no matter how much you make him out to be.
