      Do you seriously believe we could get £150billion from a windfall tax on the energy companies. Nowhere near. If you listen to Starmer though he mentions it all the time. Their worldwide profits not the profits made in this country. Its called misleading the public - lying in my book.
      More to the point do you want to tax the pension funds that invest in the energy companies. As well as the thousands of other individuals who have invested their life saving in these companies. Why should any individual be taxed because the rest of us are a bit skint.
      I think what the government have done to ease the cost of living crises is generous. Trouble is it just adds to the national debt to pass on to our grandkids. Hoping it becomes a lesser percentage of GDP with growth.
      The unemployment fugure is now only 3.5% the lowest in the G7. Where are they going to get employees to fill any new vacancies. Hopefully from the 9 million unemployable and not from abroad. I won't hold my breath though.

    • @TheUserOfGoogle
      @TheUserOfGoogle Год назад +4

      That's actually not true.
      The reason energy prices in the UK are so high isn't about privatisation verse public, the expense would still be there. It's two core things. An infrastructure problem that goes back to Thatcher and was never fixed in all the time and bipartisan governments since, meaning the UK doesn't have storage so energy is bought at real time market prices, where far to much is reliant on imports of gas. And those imports where traditionally from Russia, but because of these stupid fruitless and pointless sanctions the UK isn't buying from Russia anymore. Neither is the EU. That's an awful lot of combined demand that's suddenly hit the market and has to be made up from other suppliers. That pushes up supply prices and is at the core of inflationary pressures to cost of living expense.
      Truss is a dumpy empty headed sow, but energy prices have nothing to do with privatisation.

    What a shambles. Here is a reality check. Here in France, interest rates are rising at a quater of the rate in the UK , food prices also
    , but by less than a half of the rate. I just got a letter from the tax office informing me that the government has shelved the audiovisual tax for the next two years ( television licence), and dropped tax d'habitation for all primary residence ( so half the council tax in the uk). They are also supplementing everyone, every litre of fuel for vehicles by 20c per litre. Total, the french fuel company, is adding an extra 10c to that. So premium 98 Oct e-5 I can buy at 1.57euros a litre. Because we are 117 percent food self sufficient, and most supermarkets buy as local as possible, and we are used to not buying strawberries in December at a low price, the french housing market is not in general so falsely inflated....oh, and we are in the EU....it is not hitting us that hard tbh.
